By far the best review I've seen. The customization on buttons, the battery grip, 1080 at 60 being full frame, nobody else went there. Looking forward to your next vid, thanks!
After less than two minutes of this video, I am subscribing to this guy. Not only do I like his humor, this is a great subject. I've only done one wedding video before because I shot other types of media, I've already got a couple great tips that will be useful to me in the future.
Finally a review where someone tells you about the features of the camera other than the internal 4k and low light capabilities! Awesome job Matt! This is the best review I've seen of the A7sii! Keep up the good work man!
Great review man! You really are good at these videos. I just purchased the FS5 and love it. Im looking to get another FS5 or the A7S2 as my B cam. Thanks again for the awesome video!
As someone who just finished up a digital film production program, recently purchased the Sony A7s ii, and hoping to dive into the world of weddings, this video could not have been more helpful. Thanks so much for posting! I hope you continue to do more!
Wow. Thank you. Best review I've seen yet, and entertaining. You covered so many aspects and answered so many of the questions I have been asking. So clear and concise. Please keep the videos coming.
6:40 Matt: "Let's talk about the feature that most everybody is exited about with this camera" me: "Yeaaaaah ISOOOO" Matt: "And that's the 4K internal recording" Me: "Whaaat"
I gotta say that yeah I was happy that they put it in the S II, but I wasn't surprised because that was obvious for me lol But I'm not sure if you can capture in XAVC with internal 4K. Can you?
I've watched over 30 video reviews on this camera, I definitely learned a lot of new things in this review that will help me out tremendously! You earned yourself a new follower, thank you!
+Victor Nguyen haha kinda! It's a Sigma lens with a Nikon mount, and all Nikon lenses have a lever on the lens that can change aperture. The adapters that I use let you move the lever and adjust the aperture.
+Matt Johnson Might be a silly question but does that actually change your DoF in the viewfinder of a DSLR? Or does aperture only really close when the mirror flips up?
+Bawbalicious oh lol I just reread your comment. Yes it does show your dof, but as you stop down, your vf will get darker since there's no electronic system to make it brighter.
The Philip Bloom impression was hysterical! And yes, the best review to date so far upon this low-light beast. Also, great niche with the wedding cinematographers out there!
+Topher Villasana I actually see this weird rose coloration going on with people's lips in a lot of first-sony-a7s-video videos, and it just comes down to either shooting in s-log with the s-gamut color mode and not being familiar/experienced with grading/correcting it, or simply using s-gamut in a scenario where maybe it wouldn't work the best. It's not nearly as bad in this video as some other videos, and I actually tend to use either the "Cinema" or "Pro" color mode when shooting S-Log. S-Gamut (especially S-Gamut3.Cine) is nice, and really nice if you're matching to an A-Camera shooting the same color mode, but it requires a little bit more experience and often a specific Log>R709 LUT that Sony makes. Like I said, I've dissected Sony Picture Profile settings like crazy over time, and mostly use S-Gamut if I have a camera to match to, or am using a monitoring LUT or some other LUT that I've made that I want to create an end 'look' for. Otherwise, I'm mainly using "Cinema." I have no idea if that's even what you were talking about, but... that's what I'm talking about.
Amazing. You're the perfect reviewer for noobs like me. "Tips & tricks" as an insight into how you actually use the camera tend to be much better than a general look into the workings of the camera. 10/10 would watch again. Top lad.
Matt, that was awesome review. I don't normally post comments but was compelled to do so here. I've been watching a bunch of reviews including Mr. Bloom's and I gotta say, I really enjoyed yours! Keep up the great work!
This was a video I have been looking for for a while! My friend and I have been getting into a lot of wedding shoots and have been considering A7S II's for a while. I'm going to send this over to him, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future!
This is brilliant Matt. I got my A7Sii yesterday, and am keeping my GH4's as well as my Nikon D750 as they are all good for different things. The A7Sii reminds me of my travels to India - extremely amazing, but just as frustrating and infuriating! I am looking forward to my first shoot with this camera. What I shot and looked at last night in the dark ... blew my mind! Thanks for sharing this...it was really comprehensive and fun.
+Enzo Maisano Thanks Enzo! All cameras have their quirks, I have yet to find a perfect one. Please let me know if you do. That said, the A7S2 is great for what I use it for, and I am happy with it.
18:29 "The low light is ... sssfffstupid" hahahaha i cracked, great review Matt! and great channel, the best one i've seen on wedding cinematography matters, keep it up!
Thank you! This is the most useful A7s II review I've found for the sort of filming I'm hoping to do. (Not wedding cinematography, but a lot of the same situations apply). I'm about to get a Sony A7s II, but was having trouble finding a practical, hands-on review that would be relevant to me. I'm not by any means a camera geek, so it's hard for me to translate numbers and stats, and even side-by-side comparisons into "yeah, but how does it handle--what situations do you run into that"? You answered a lot of questions. I appreciate knowing that it doesn't make tacos - some of the reviews were so down on it for its cons that I was getting a bit nervous, like "how bad is it?" You helped put the cons into context, which made more sense to me. Please keep vlogging! I look forward to watching your future videos.
kick ass man!! your approach is very entertaining. I hope you continue with these videos. I hope you go into the audio and story telling as well.. I watched like 6 of your videos after this review.. I really like the way you tell the story of wedding day.. thanks again!!
amazing video, pitched perfectly, had answers to all my questions on the a7sii and more :) thanks so much, looking forward to watching more of your videos :D
Great review!! Also i thought it was awesome that you were thinking a7s ii and fs5 are going to be a great team cause thats exactly what i have as a team right now!! FS5 for day and A7s ii for evening to night!! I shoot mostly live big festivals on stage and surf comps and lots of nature cause i live in the redwoods. Thanks again for this amazing review Matt!!
+Chris Smith Thanks Chris! I was out in San Francisco last month at Muir Woods, with my A7Sii of course. :) Beautiful country out there! Great choice on the FS5 & A7Sii combo!
good video, keep it up! i just converted from a canon 6d to sony a7s II for wedding cinema and will never go back! looking forward to seeing more videos i can relate to!
Nice review thanks Matt. I have been filming weddings for the past year and am thinking of getting this camera. I have the A7S and love it so this seems like the next step. I would love to see a review about lighting a wedding film. In particular the set up someone should use with lights at a receptions etc. I don't use any lighting at the moment and only use whats available but I have seen some wedding films where they light the reception etc and it makes them look very cinematic. I've looked for some reviews on lighting wedding films for ages but every lighting tutorial is for wedding photos only
+Marty Watego thanks Marty, that is a great idea! If you are wanting to get into basic wedding lighting, I would look at the Lowel Prolight, it is around $125 and really nice for lighting a dance floor.
That was a great review, Matt. I'm a still photographer, but still enjoyed your explanations. The only negative thing I have to say is that I noticed in most of your sample footage it kept noticeably drifting in and out of focus and the overall quality wasn't as spectacular as I thought it would be from an A7s II. You gave excellent advice and great tips on setting up the camera for rapid use.
+cooloox thanks! Haha that was my manual focusing, not due to any fault of the cameras. I probably could have used better clips that I kept in focus. And keep in mind that this was exported at 1080p, not 4K on UA-cam, so of course the quality won't look as good. Look at some of my later wedding cinematography training videos, those were shot and exported in 4K with the A7Sii for better results. :)
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson I'll definitely watch more of your videos! As far as video quality goes - I have read that UA-cam messes up video quality too. Keep up the great work.
I just got 3 new a7sII and I even sent an email to Kraig Adams because of some questions I had. But this video answered all of them and thanks for the XUME adapter mention. I been screwing my ND filters from lens to lens all this time and I have missed moments (ex. The couple coming out of the church right after the ceremony) because I don't have my ND ready. Thanks for the video.
You rule Matt. I don't know why I didn't think of adding slow mo settings to custom dial 1 or 2 and all the things I left out of the custom buttons to the function button. Cheers.
great vid. can't wait to see more vids. any vids explaining all the video setting? I'm new to video making so more sure about all these setting and what they do.
Fantastic review, yesterday bought Sony 2nd hand a7sII with 16mm f2.8. I have other Nikon lenses. Recently bought Sigma 85mm f1.4. Will have to buy metabone adapter also. thanks for sharing. Good luck
Matt you are by far the best I'm not just saying that. I haven't bought this camera yet but trying to decide between the a6500 or the a7sii as a starter but think it has to be the a7sii. I just bought the crane gimbal for the camera I haven't bought yet so no going back now. I plan to maybe shoot a few weddings, property etc. so the lower light powers on this camera is a must plus the slow mo is the icing on the cake (if you like icing that is) anyway many thanks for a great video.
I have 5 years shooting video in the military. I think that this will be helpful having a specified type of video for weddings specifically. I plan on snagging this camera and maybe 2 of the a7s for fall back cameras. Anyways I look forward to seeing where you go with this as Im a camera enthusiast and so far I like your shot choices and color grading.
Hey there! Just found this video and instantly subscribed! :-) keep going with the wedding cinematography tutorials, I'd love to see it among the Kraig Adams stuff. Aaaand... gosh I wish I could have the A7s II one day...
+harryhair09 Thanks! I don't believe it is possible to shoot a still photo, but if you are shooting 4K you should easily be able to use a still from the video in very high quality.
Thanks so much for watching guys! Here's a timeline for the video in case you want to jump around:

20:10 - Recap! Is the A7Sii worth it? Is it good enough for filming weddings?
Thanks! :)
Awesome video sir! Would you think the a7rii would be a better all rounder?
+Aaron Fleming depends on if you're doing more photo or video. More photo get the a7rii. More video go with the A7sii.
@@whoismatt In 2019 would you recommend the a7riii or the a7sii for wedding video?
Did you just shout me out.... I'M FAN GIRLING RIGHT NOW
+Wedding Film School haha yesssss!
+Wedding Film School Dat SHOUT OUT
I was able to buy a really banged up a7sii for 500. I used the 35mm rokinon Cine T1.5... In Love
By far the best review I've seen. The customization on buttons, the battery grip, 1080 at 60 being full frame, nobody else went there. Looking forward to your next vid, thanks!
+Reeyore thanks! I'm still learning tons of stuff about this camera. I may have to make a video showing hidden things people didn't know about lol.
After less than two minutes of this video, I am subscribing to this guy. Not only do I like his humor, this is a great subject. I've only done one wedding video before because I shot other types of media, I've already got a couple great tips that will be useful to me in the future.
+P C haha thanks so much!
The most clear and useful review of A7SII! Thank you, Matt!
+Alexis Antonov Thanks Alexis!
This video was INCREDIBLE! I have never seen a video where someone was so thorough! Thank you for the exact info I was looking for! Subscribed!!

+Jason Shelton twas a great video. Nice to see you here Jason #brofist
Dude I cracked when I hear the "Philip Bloom"'s Hello.
Haha yesss!!!
As someone who just finished up a digital film production program, recently purchased the Sony A7s ii, and hoping to dive into the world of weddings, this video could not have been more helpful. Thanks so much for posting! I hope you continue to do more!
+Kyla Habazin Thanks Kyla! Glad to help!
Wow. Thank you. Best review I've seen yet, and entertaining. You covered so many aspects and answered so many of the questions I have been asking. So clear and concise. Please keep the videos coming.
+Kara Tydings Thanks Kara!
6:40 Matt: "Let's talk about the feature that most everybody is exited about with this camera" me: "Yeaaaaah ISOOOO" Matt: "And that's the 4K internal recording" Me: "Whaaat"
Bahaha you gotta remember: the original A7S had similar ISO performance, it was the 4K internal that blew most people away! :D
I gotta say that yeah I was happy that they put it in the S II, but I wasn't surprised because that was obvious for me lol
But I'm not sure if you can capture in XAVC with internal 4K. Can you?

+kart0onx15 Haha yeaaaaaa
Awesome review Matt! You're what I'm looking for in terms of wedding cinematography tutorials and product reviews. Please keep posting, thank you!
Thanks Andres!
I've watched over 30 video reviews on this camera, I definitely learned a lot of new things in this review that will help me out tremendously! You earned yourself a new follower, thank you!

Great beard
Wait... so you have manual apeture with your lenses? Like it's on the lens and you don't need to go into the camera to adjust it?
+Victor Nguyen haha kinda! It's a Sigma lens with a Nikon mount, and all Nikon lenses have a lever on the lens that can change aperture. The adapters that I use let you move the lever and adjust the aperture.
+Matt Johnson Might be a silly question but does that actually change your DoF in the viewfinder of a DSLR? Or does aperture only really close when the mirror flips up?
+Bawbalicious the vf is electronic so changes happens in realtime, speed, aperture, wb, etc will show up.
+unfaix Yeah I get that that's why I specified my question to apply to DSLRs.
+Bawbalicious oh lol I just reread your comment. Yes it does show your dof, but as you stop down, your vf will get darker since there's no electronic system to make it brighter.
loooool man you crack crack me up... but at the same time you're an amazing speaker and have fantastic input! great first vlog
The Philip Bloom impression was hysterical!
And yes, the best review to date so far upon this low-light beast. Also, great niche with the wedding cinematographers out there!
+Shayne Warren thanks so much Shayne!
I wanted to listen to this Sony review, but I was just distracted by your lips. Your beautiful rose colored lips.
I have no idea if that's even what you were talking about, but... that's what I'm talking about.
+Mat R Haha Dude, I don't even know you. But I love you.
+Topher Villasana +Mat R I think that is exactly what Topher was talking about.
+Mat R what's funny is that I didn't shoot this on A7S, I shot this on FS100, which doesn't even have S-Log. :P
young ZZ top? XD
That's the goal! :D
So far one of the best reviews I've seen about this camera on UA-cam! :) Thks
Thanks so much Samuel!
Amazing. You're the perfect reviewer for noobs like me. "Tips & tricks" as an insight into how you actually use the camera tend to be much better than a general look into the workings of the camera.
10/10 would watch again. Top lad.

Thanks Jake! Glad you love it!

+Vishweshwar Kandalgaonkar thanks so much!
Great review, man. Keep vlogging!
+Danny Rasmussen thanks Danny!
+HipStar hahaha thanks so much! The A7sii is s great choice 😁
Excellent review, thank you!
+Shrouded One thanks!

+Alex S thanks Alex!

+Mike Spille thanks Mike!
Super helpful, cheers Matt!
+Nouge thanks!
+Dimrain13 thanks so much!
Thanks for this, really great video and great info.
+greysuit17 thank you!
Excellent review - I'm subscribing right now!

Amazing. Looking at either pulling the trigger on 5D mark 3 or this camera, but after this....I think this is the one.
+James Gillespie do ittttt!!! :D
Hey there! Just found this video and instantly subscribed! :-) keep going with the wedding cinematography tutorials, I'd love to see it among the Kraig Adams stuff. Aaaand... gosh I wish I could have the A7s II one day...
+Kisi3L thanks so much! Glad you liked the video!
Sweet review man. Thanks
Second time on this video and I caught the Philip Bloom joke at the start. That gave me a chuckle.
+Cubical Productions hahaha thanks!
Awesome review. You are good not only with the camera, but in front of the other camera :) thanks so much
Btw do u know if this camera is capable of shooting a still photo during the recording if a video clip?
+harryhair09 Thanks! I don't believe it is possible to shoot a still photo, but if you are shooting 4K you should easily be able to use a still from the video in very high quality.
