    My wife and I are doing a recycling focused co-op run. We did the math for 1000 pots with angler and lure master, and, using all the coal from trash to smoke lobsters, crabs, and as many crayfish as you can, you’d make roughly the same money from freshwater pots as ocean ones. It was an interesting find.

    Here's a quick tip for PC users:
    1. Download the "Automate" mod.
    2. Line up your crab pots.
    3. Place a chest beside just one of those crab pots.
    4. Place your preferred bait inside the chest.
    And there you have it. The chest will automatically place baits on your crab pots each day and retrieve the catch, and place it on your chest.
    And to make things better, place a recycling machine beside the chest so that garbage will automatically be converted to something useful.

    it never occurred to me to use targeted bait in crab pots. Now i can make crab cakes without ponds. Pog

    I set up 3 crab pots and one deluxe bait ratio. This does two things. One obviously you'll always have enough bait for the pots, two any leftover bait is sent to my fishing rod. I don't fish daily but usually pass by some crab pot stations. This lets me slowly build up my bait count in the fishing rod for when I do want to go fishing for a specific reason. Granted it's not a huge amount of exp, but it's more than enough for me to make fertilizer.

    I started a game with a bunch of mods, one of them being automation. I set up several traps in the lake, with a chest to store what they catch, a deluxe worm bin to supply the traps daily, a trash recycler to convert all the junk they gather, and a smoker to boost the value of the fish caught. With this setup, checking it once or twice a year can net a pretty significant profit considering the minimal effort and materials needed. Great video btw!

      I do much the same 5 pots to 1 wormbin with a recycler, A kiln to convert any wood from the recycled trash to coal and a smoker. This can scale up by adding pots and wormbins. I generally just pull all the fish smoked or not on the 28th to give me a boost to cash for the next seasons crops. This also works well with the mod "fishnets" this introduces fishnets (duh) that work the same as the pots except that they catch regular fish

    I usually only keep a couple of crab pots around, mostly for making lobster bisque. I think wild bait may be best in that case.

    Now they just need to make a bait that targets CDs and glasses...

    • @Kitadollx
      @Kitadollx  4 місяці тому +9

      I think you're on to something. If CDs and glasses didn't eat the bait, then you should be able to catch them without baiting the crab pots at all. Proof of sentient trash in Stardew?

    To be honest, I do beach foraging, crab hunting in the mines, and checking the Traveling Cart until I get what I need to complete the Crab Pot Bundle for the 3 free pots, use them just enough to catch enough of each Crab Pot fish to complete Gourmet Chef, Master Angler, and any Raccoon Requests, and then never look at them again.
    I just find the pots to be too space, labor, and time intensive for the amount of money they bring in. You can't easily group them together like you can with crops, animals, artisan equipment, or mushroom logs. They require constant daily maintenance in order to maintain the gold flow (also one of the reasons why I prefer bats to mushrooms for the cave), so any day you don't spend emptying and refilling them is lost income. And since I don't play with mods, they have to be manually loaded and unloaded, but unlike other similar equipment like kegs or casks there is the additional risk of accidentally misclicking, pulling a pot out of the water, and then having to spend a few extra seconds putting it back.
    By comparison, I can head down to the beach, spend a few in-game hours in one spot catching some gold or iridium-quality ocean fish, pop them in smokers, and make as much money from that one haul as I would from meticulously maintaining dozens of crab pots. And if I don't feel like doing that again the next day, I'm free to do something else with that time without the spectre of losing money from skipping a daily task.

    Crab pots fill/create in a new niche in a super diverse game. It adds to the game, and I'm sure some enjoy it! I never use them but to fish for the items needed for fishing perfection and MAYBE orders. Repeat visit loading is bad enough in other machines that give even greater rewards. I'd rather decide between when to plant crops, harvest, mine, or just pole fish on most days.

    i'm currently doing my first proper playthough (just hit ginger island) and was using 12 crap pots the whole game. i put them in the small pond on the farm and have 4 deluxe bait maker to feed them + extra for fishing myself. I was using all the cashed fish for creating quality fertilizer but stopped in year 2 for deluxe speed-gro. i'm currently using it to make sashimi and thats my goto food for any situation + i just gift it when ever i see a villiger. it's like by most villigers and loved my sebastion. just don't give it to emily, kent or Evelyn.

    i find "rebaiting" the pots incredibly annoying so unless i have to do the crabpot bundle or im looking to romance Elliot the only crab pots in my playthroughs are gonna be for decoration xD

      The mod "automate" can help with that with this mod if the pots are adjacent to a chest anything caught buy the pots is automatically transferred to the chest and any bait in the chest transfers to the empty pots. Next add a wormbin next to the chest. The bait produced by the bin automatically transfers to the chest

    In coop you can have both Mariner and Angler, as some perks are shared, mostly the ones that affect prices, so that there isnt a "i sell these and you sell these items" kind of hassle.
    So it might have been worth to have had a theoretical of the both of em together.

      That's a great point. I totally overlooked stacking professions in multiplayer. I'll have to keep that in mind for future videos. Thanks for watching!

    I think crab pots deserve a buff, like they always catch a fish with bait and only trash without, one level 10 profession is mariner and luremaster combined (you don't need bait to catch fish), and the other is chance to catch treasure maybe, or make your fish iridium quality.

    • @Kitadollx
      @Kitadollx  4 місяці тому +1

      I'm with you, there. I really wanted mariner or luremaster to be worth it, but they are so disappointing compared to most other professions, it's hard to justify going that route, even just for variety on different playthroughs.

    I like crab pots. if you have Recycling Machines they're awesome.
    so I have the Automate Mod that allows machines to automatically work with a chest right next to them.
    if you put one of each fish they catch and each trash item they auto harvest them too.
    so what I do is put down a chest and a whole line of Pots then I either put some bait in the chest and let them work.
    but I found out that I can actually put a Bait Bin down next to the chest too and the Bait Bin will auto deposit it's bait into the chest which will automatically put it in the pots as long as they're in a line and Touching each other. it's pretty awesome.
    I never take Mariner because I want Trash.

  • @lolkingXD
    @lolkingXD 3 місяці тому

    Small note (I'm not sure if you said it and I missed it): If you are planing on catching any specific fish (like mussels to trade for mango saplings), you should NOT pick the mariner profession since it overwrites the chances to be all equal to 0.143 regardless of the bait used. Thus, it is best to get any other profession and use targeted bait for a chance of 0.218 (in case of mussels).

    • @Kitadollx
      @Kitadollx  3 місяці тому

      Good point. I didn't mention that explicitly, so thanks for bringing it up. In that case it would also be wise to avoid luremaster, since it would be auto-baiting with standard bait instead of targeted bait. Thanks for watching!

    Crab pots are worth not for the money but for the ability to get a lot of refined quartz daily. That's why I value Luremaster skill since it save the time and effort to refill the lure and you want more junk anyway.

    On my first 1.6 playthrough I spent nearly two ingame months with half a dozen crab pots failing to get the mussel I needed to complete my fishing collection and it NEVER occurred to me that I could have made bait from the foraged ones to help out 😭

    Is there any way to increase the chances of bigger crabpot fish? Like luck or fishing level? (I only need a 5 in. shrimp to have max size for all fish except legendary, and it's not giving me one :(

    • @GemR38
      @GemR38 4 місяці тому

      I think the Deluxe Bait has a chance of improving the quality. A better quality fish is usually a bigger fish too I think. Worth a try.

    how profitable are they considering the value of the recycled trash ?

    • @Kitadollx
      @Kitadollx  3 місяці тому +1

      All of the calculated profits assume recycled trash is sold as-is. Specific trash recycling products may be more valuable to keep though (coal?), so the true value may vary person to person. Thanks for watching!
