      When I was a boy scout I remember going up there to plant trees. It's funny that a lot of the old timers actually like the look of the desert more than all the green that is they are now. Are the even had comments about that they went out to the desert in the Southwest and thought that copper hill looked prettier. It was beautiful in its own way for sure

    Andy, the tech in the storage room on the side of the Change House is an acetylene generator. Used by the welding department before one could purchase bottled gas.

      +Nameless-t-shirtwear customscreenprinting This area stopped mining copper because it just became too expensive and not enough reward mostly what you find around here are coal mines or rock quarries . Although there were a ton of coal mining going around this area back in the day. A lot of mines in the area would have provided coal to make into Coke that was used for making iron and steel. However that day has come and gone

    Andy, the brick on the Shop Building are yellow because they are fire brick. This building housed the blacksmith shop, along with a carpenter shop, machine shop and drill repair shop. The brick were not produced locally, they were purchased and brought in by the mining company via the rail road.

      Thank you for the info. I did not know that they were fire Brick. That makes sense. You guys run an awesome operation up there. I am glad I was able to visit.

      +Mark Fun Jones This place always amazed me as a kid Many thousands of acres had nothing growing because the acid rain created from mining and roasting the ore Had killed off everything. Even birds did not fly over the area at one point

    I live in McCaysville! It still amazes me how the earth has restored itself back to its current form. We bought three acres here and you would never know that the land here looked like a desert not to long ago!

      It was an amazing feat to plant all the trees to help repair the damage.

    you mean ya can't go into the mine ?

    • @AndysJourneys
      @AndysJourneys  6 років тому +1

      +FloridaGreg33770 According to the lady at the museum the levels are flooded and it would be very dangerous. She remembers going down there and it was already ankle-deep and full of old equipment that they just left there. I don't know if they would even let a technical cave diver go in there now

      oh....thats a shame.....I thought if they had part of it you could walk thru would be great, like at the old Reed Gold mine near Charlotte, NC

      +FloridaGreg33770 is that the portal 13 place? One has a museum and a ride in it?

    • @greg33770
      @greg33770 6 років тому

      no ride, and idk whats a portal 13 ? It's the historic Reed Mine, just east of Charlotte, NC click onto: www.nchistoricsites.org/reed/

    • @AndysJourneys
      @AndysJourneys  6 років тому

      +FloridaGreg33770 I can't remember where it is but I have seen a youtuber go to it. I think Jacob actually hit it up. Basically it's an old mine that they have turned into a museum and you actually get to ride mine cars into the mine and back out. It also may be a different number
