    Good call cutting the line. When I was working on yachts we had a guest that wanted to spear grouper and hogfish in the Bahamas. So he got down in 15 meters of water near a wreck and shot a big grouper that weighed 83 pounds. He shot low and the fish took off into the wreck. Our guest clipped has gun to a buoy and surfaced, caught his breath and went down again, he was wrapping the line around his wrist as he was going down and eventually got to within 15 feet of the fish, it takes off deeper inside the wreck and he is tangled up in line so he is dragged into the rig, bashes his head, gets trapped inside a crevice and can't get out. He didn't think to cut the line, he refused an emergency small tank, he also didn't listen to the safety diver who told him not to go down. Luckily one of our guys saw him go down and went down there with a small emergency tank, got him hooked up and then went and retrieved the fish. Had the guy cut the rope, he would have been better off. As it was, he got 8 stitches in his head, 24 in his hand, 10 in his knee, almost died if we didn't have the emergency mini-tank of air with us and he also wasn't allowed to dive anymore for the rest of the trip. Not that he really could have, but he said ge wanted too.

    This was a great video! I could feel the intensity 5-5:45. I was glad when Jake was revealed cause the video had a solo feel to it. (Even though I know you don't do that)
    Passion is one thing. A fish is a fish. You made the right decision. Live a long life!
    Sorry for the losses, but you're alive and well and I'm grateful for that.

    That was tough watching you cut the line. I knew it was going bad as it got dark and gloomy. I probably would’ve cut it myself. The fish isn’t worth dying for. I knew a guy who had to cut himself free at 105’ and free ascend. To say he was messed up is an understatement. He spent months in the hyperbaric chamber. Every joint in his body was wrecked. He lived in terrible pain and couldn’t work. He has brain damage , vision problems , and hearing loss.

    Maybe you could try marking your line so you know how far a fish is from you. Like a different color for how far you are from the shaft or shooting line

    I enjoyed that watch, thank you. Very interesting re the disposal of the rigs..

      Appreciate you tuning in! It is, very unfortunate imo… these rigs are huge ecosystems surrounded by essentially desert mud bottom..

    you should take a secure shot on that big cubera, patience is the key, that place is dangerous and you know one wrong shot your shaft will be taken down just like that

  • @curttimmbch
    @curttimmbch 5 місяців тому +2

    They should let them leave those rigs and let them be a tax right off for adding to the state reef program.
    Seems worse to pull them and destroy the growth than to leave them.

    • @BradenSherron
      @BradenSherron  5 місяців тому

      It absolutely is worse… creates a massive fish kill. & is basically just destroying a huge reef ecosystem in the middle of a desert - being our bottom is mostly desolate mud…

    I love how the government gets to regulate the number and even size of fish I take but they can’t be bothered not to blow up an entire ecosystem for their convenience

    completely removing the structure from where the rig was is such a horrible idea

    • @BradenSherron
      @BradenSherron  5 місяців тому +1

      It’s terrible. These platforms provide habitat in a huge desert essentially and to blow up and remove it literally does the opposite of what the ‘environmentalists’ think.

    Is there any petition or movement to stop them from blowing up the rigs? Braden?

      I’ve been trying to learn more about it. So far it has seemed above anyone I know..
      definitely needs to become a bigger thing. Problem is not many really are aware of what’s happening.

    When you do those dives have you ever thought about bringing a power head for the initial show then carry a reel gun for the holding shot to pull up dead? I know it’s not done and you carry two guns but man, I think that going for those is so rare free diving that you almost have to power head then shoot a line gun to pull up.

  • @deangraham4263
    @deangraham4263 5 місяців тому +1

    Man that's crazy. I didn't know they blow up the bottom of the rigs. But that's not all the time right? I wonder why it's decided to blow them up over just cut them and leave the bottom foundation behind as artificial reef/structure. Gotta be a reason to do all that over cutting them. And shooting that fish (I'm no spear fisherman so I'm just blind asking) what if you ran a float like for a wahoo. That way it can only dive x amount and get tangled.

    • @bluedoggum8373
      @bluedoggum8373 5 місяців тому +1

      Idk but Gurunteed it’s some bs reason. Leaving the legs would be absolutely no environmental problem imo. Blowing the rigs should not even be legal. How on earth could they know they could kill half a dozen threatened species for all they know

    Hi Brandon, if you are open to a different strategy and technique for spearing the rig let me know. I think it might be more productive with less risk.

    • @Christian_Tango_Christ
      @Christian_Tango_Christ 5 місяців тому

      You have a great breath hold. Try descending on the upstream side of the rig directly to your max depth letting the current bring you into the rig.
      Then begin the hunt from max depth upward through the rig. Often the fish will swim away from the rig with this approach.
      This presents a shot at the fish either already outside of the rig or heading that way. Plus they're going up away from you and not down away from you.

    If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!
    There are only so many SR71 pilots on the planet. What you do is very unique and very dangerous. In a way, you are creating the process and setting the standard for this type of high risk/high reward trophy free dive spearfishing.

    what did you mean by a "possible green 100+lb freight train" at 5:47? great video as always!!

    • @vincentmangeaux9419
      @vincentmangeaux9419 5 місяців тому +4

      when a fish is "green" it's still kicking and fighting hard. Given the size of that fish he estimated it was over 100+ pounds which is akin to a freight train. Overall very dangerous situation to be in.

      There actually is quite a lot of offshore drilling around the world- however I hear most of it is off limits to divers. Against the law
