  • Dr. Jem Bendell, professor of Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cumbria, joins Paul Beckwith in a conversation which took place at the United Nations COP27 event in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
This video was recorded on November 9th, 2022, and published on January 22nd, 2023, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.
    Some of the topics discussed:
    - The circumstances and motivations that led to the creation and distribution of the paper “Deep adaptation: a map for navigating climate tragedy.”
    - How the paper concludes that it is too late for industrial consumer societies, that they would break down because of the direct and indirect impacts of climate change.
    - How, in the wake of the viral downloading of the paper, Jem has focussed on trying to help create an online network so people can meet each other and talk about this way of seeing the situation in the future.
    - An observation of Twitter data showing what appears to be an upsurge against action on climate change, and how it is reflective of a segment of society that is rebelling against what they believe is a ploy to control them or as a way for corporations to try and make money out of the climate disaster.
    - How the global south will eventually organize together to make sure the West degrows.
    - The reason why talking about the reality of the breakdown of industrial consumer societies is taboo in mainstream media and from politicians.
    - And more . . .

Thank you all for your continuous attempt and struggle to inform the puplic about the severity of Climate Change/Disaster.
I like Jem Bendell's approach to the subject and it says alot about COP, if he says he has no intention to ever go to another COP ever again. It sadly confirms my view about the COP events.
    A dire future indeed.

Thanks Paul and Jem. We greatly appreciated this conversation. Yes #collapse is inevitable for numerous reasons (not simply climate) but #justice certainly is not. In this regard, we agree that the Global South is justified where it challenges the Global North in terms of unmitigated harms unequally distributed. The Global South must challenge power by exerting power itself if it is to effect some measure of partial and relative socio-ecological justice in face of our predicament. #JustCollapse

Corporations, business, or individuals that don't remain competitive in the market place are replaced by those that are. This is the crux of the problem. We produce/consume to stay alive. If I reduce my effort I lose my job. If a corporation reduces profitability it goes out of business. We are caught in a Mexican standoff. Anyone who lets up on the gas is simply replaced. Under these conditions we are forced to consume until collapse.

Reread Henrik Ibsen's play, "An Enemy of the People (En folkefiende)." This is what you are seeing. As Yoda says, "fear leads to anger … anger leads to hate … hate leads to suffering." Before people were in denial. Now people are scared.

I found this fascinating. Especially Jem’s analysis of why people are embracing the far-right as we’re seeing. I’ve never heard anyone offer a more plausible explanation before. I’m curious about his new book. I assume it will be along the lines of “A Chicken Can’t Lay A Duck Egg” by Graham Maxton and Bernice Maxton-Lee, but I’ll probably check it out anyway. But I guess that’s the problem. That it’s people like me who understand the science from videos like this, and already have political ideas in mind for how the future should look who are reading the books. It’s not the people who really need to be reading them.

2023 Week 04: Processing Jem Bendell on Deep Adaptation, Peter Carter's reporting on Davos and Tipping Points, and Paul Beckwith's Super El Nino 2024-2025 forecast. Thank you CEF for the excellent work! Please allow me three brief responses. 1) Jem, on the other side of the societal collapse coin, may I suggest the equal conceptual framework validity of global interfaith awakening? This seems no less aware, realistic and adaptive. 2) Peter, on SG Guterres at Davos and protracted conflict in Ukraine as a climate risk multiplier, perhaps this means we can mobilize around near-term "green swan" peace in Ukraine as a climate adaptation multiplier. Have you heard any discussion of a united loss and damages case from the Global South for full Russian military withdrawal from Ukraine by COP28? 3) Paul, I am concerned that conflict in Ukraine may be humanity's single greatest threat to preparation for a Super El Nino in 2024-2025. Is it the sense in Canadian circles that America is doing enough diplomatically, and/or militarily, and/or through its USAID Climate Strategy 2022-2030? Does America need to accelerate or change its leadership course on any of these three tracks? Thanks again and may God bless every reader with a hopeful way forward through whatever circumstances this comment finds you.

Its April 19th 2023 and 99% of people go on with their lives like nothing is wrong or going to change. People will wake when they are over the cliff and in the air falling. I guess that's best seeing as how collapse is inevitable. God bless

"People don't believe the future is a good one" And, that is why the reproduction rate is dropping globally. It is a natural response to environmental (ecological overshoot) distress.

when i knew it was game over it took a long time for me to get cool with it. the bottom line arctic ice took millions of years to form, permafrost took 10s of thousands of years to form , getting a co2 balance back is not going to stop what's already in motion , climate impacts below ground , hence more volcanic activity ,only nature can do a reset , i think by unstable volcanic action can reset temperatures by emitting vast amounts of heat , i don't think we realise the magnitude of what is coming , we are just, right now experiencing an introduction

Is Jem familiar with Thomas Piketty’s work? Just finished reading his Capital and Ideology. Highly recommended! I found his suggestions somewhat naive however as they tended to focus on working within extant, largely Western political and societal structures, while ignoring human nature.
One almost never changes a system from within. More often, rather, the system changes the one who hopes to change it. Read Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s The Scheme for a good look at what powerful interests are willing to do to entrench and further their power.
Look forward to Jem’s suggestions. We need lots of good ideas. What I think Piketty got right is that we seem to be at a societal tipping point, with more and more public awareness of the direness of our situation, that human emissions are the cause, and that vested interests have done nothing but lie and obfuscate while knowing full well exactly what their business model would produce.

Planned responses and actions to irreversible abrupt climate collapse will and are being managed by those in POWER and the systems and networks they deploy. These entities will proceed in the way they have always historically done so. Namely in a way that benefits and strengthens their POWER and survivability. This will become clearer as we move forward. A "bottom up" democratic participatory response and / or "just" response will not be the order of the day in our final days. It will unfold like any other previous civilizational collapse only this time it will be global and final.

The Global Average Temperature (GAT) continues it upward trend over the last 10 years. See this link: www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-temperature . Note that 2016 is the hottest year on record because it was an El Niño year: www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/climate/earth-hottest-years.html. There's also a chance of a 'futz El Niño' in the 2nd half of this year: www.irishtimes.com/environment/climate-crisis/2023/01/16/global-temperatures-could-rise-off-the-chart-with-return-of-el-nino-this-year-scientists-warn/

I understand what’s going on I know the cause I know we’re responsible I’m not denying anything however, in the last few years I went from we have to do something about this…… to there is nothing we can do about this, so the last thing I want is a solution of austerity because it is pointless. If there was something that could be done, I’d be all for it.

If people knew all the science they would realise that we’re at 8b heading to 10billion people. Everything we might do or try pales into insignificance besides this awesome number. The earth WILL get us into check again. We’re human animals & the crash is coming. Oh & to stop it we have to tell those on 1/20th of the resources we in the global north have that that’s 👍🏻 perfect! That’s as much as you will ever have… 🤷🏻‍♂️
    It’s a tight spot.

OK, Not really sure what to say....or describe how I feel right now.
Paul, I stopped watch your posts a couple or 3 years ago, for two reasons, 1) you never seemed to respond to questions? (maybe you got so many, it wasn't possible?) and 2, you drove me crazy with your bloody cats! I'm the one who described you as the "mad cat lady", but there may have been more than one lay that accusation at your door.
In addition, I saw a couple of Jem Bendell posts maybe 8-10 years ago and decided, this guy wasn't serious, so asked UA-cam not to recommend his posts.
Formal apologies to you both, I misjudged for different reasons both of you. I'm now thinking about getting a dog, I spend my summers under canvass in Scotland and a cat will find a new home, a dog however can come along, and I'll look at some of your more recent vids along with work done by Jim.
    Best wishes. George
