Whaaaa????? I just discovered them in 2020. Dang, I was sleeping under a rock this whole time. This is what I miss when I leave the HNY early every year. They are awesome!
Kuv tseem saib cov yeeb yam zoo no hauv 2021. Cov tub lo zoo nraug heev! Hlub nej kawg os! I am still watching this wonderful show in 2021. You are so handsome! Love you guys!
WOW, IT HAS BEEN FOR SO LONG TO SEE A REAL HMONG SHOW! This is the representation of Hmong. Hmong clothes, Hmong instruments, Hmong dance, and Hmong music. ALL THE OTHER HMONG GIRL DANCES SO FAR WERE NOT REPRESENTING HMONG: HMONG CLOTHES, BUT NOT HMONG DANCES AND MUSICS. SOMETIMES THEY WERE LAO CLOTHES. NICE JOB GUYS! KEEP THE HMONG SPIRITS AND CULTURE ALIVE!
Lao/Thai attire and dance is required as part of the competition. I understand what you mean by not dancing to Hmong beats, but it's hard to find original Hmong music that is not ispired or copied off of other cultures' beats. Kinda wished people didn't judge so much without knowing the requirements of the competition and knowing what resources we're limited to. I do love traditional qeej dancing though. Mad props to them for this wonderful choreography.
+Melanie Vang How can a Hmong New Year requires a Lao/Thai cultural? Aren't we Hmong? I've been to many Hmong new years and there's no such thing as Lao/Thai requirements. They all talking about Hmong, but no such Hmong performances. Oh, how long have we been on earth? And we got nothing of our own to show? There are plenty of Hmong instruments and sounds that needed to be brought up and play and perform. How come Hmong don't have the times and aren't preparing Hmong's own culture and talents to show but having the times to prepare others' culture? Other races don't even show anything about Hmong by themselves! Every year same craps, nothing change! Don't make excuses not to find a Hmong song or dance. Go and discover our Hmong heritage, art and cultures in depths so no one will make judgements!
Actually if you read the dance competition applications for most new years (especially CA new years), they do require a Lao/Thai song. We are dancers and not artists. Unfortunately, we rely heavily on the music and sounds available to us. I don't think you're directing your concern with the right group of people (dancers). I do agree that as Hmong dancers we should incorporate more of our own cultural talents, but as I said before we are limited. Perhaps you should bring your concerns to new year committees and artists before attacking dancers, or perhaps begin the change yourself. Show us what true Hmong talent is all about. All talk, but no action. As a side note, I understand that other cultures don't show anything about Hmong, but other cultures do show dances of other cultures (i.e. The American TV show "So You Think You Can Dance" actually have their contestants do Bollywood routines). To limit yourself to your culture alone would be a very close-minded thing to do. Dancing is just a form of art and dancers shouldn't be judged on and limited to what kind of dance they choose to do. This is, after all, just a dance competition.
Perhaps I don't speak for all dancers out there, but I would like to believe this is how most dancers feel. Try to understand our side of the story before attacking us and make a change if you feel so obligated to do so.
I like them too. I wish they could have won the first place, but their free style or 3rd round didn't give them enough traditional dance that Hmong California new year were looking for. I actually love this Hmong dance and the Thai dance, but not the free style.
