Playing keeper option is there in hockey also just like in football.
When teams are losing at the closing stages of match they can sub the goalie for a outfield player so they can try to attack with all 11 players and score a goal

How that against the spirit of the game? It’s a perfectly legal and fair strategy that teams used to have an attacking advantage while making it easier for the opposing team to score goals. Tell me how it’s against the spirit of the game?
