You’ve been teaching me new things for over 25 years, Bill! I went to college and studied Geology because of the interest you sparked in me at seven years old. I treasure being alive at the same time as you.
@@punch_bowl_turd3005Can you define woman in a way that includes 50% of the population, doesn't disclude intersex people, doesn't disclude people with birth defects, and doesn't disclude people with indeterminate DNA? A woman is someone who identifies with and performs the role of womanhood in their culture, if any.
I caregive for a man with Ataxia. He's one of the sweetest, smartest, and most amazing people I know. Thank you Bill for shedding some light on this heartbreaking disease.
I have the gene mutation in my CAC1NA gene. Because of this I have episodic ataxia type 2. I get loss of balance, coordination, slurred speech and other neurological symptoms in episodes. And they can be triggered by different things like stress, anxiety, caffeine, among other triggers. One moment I can be walking fine. The next I could be bed ridden for the day. Just wanted to say thank you for spreading awareness for ataxia. There are many variations. But I often get asked what ataxia is.
thanks for sharing this, i think you illuminated my mother's symptoms. She has episodes of vertigo & slurred speech at times. Her doctors made her swear off all caffeine (even chocolate! criminal) but didn't really explain why other than a vague reference to cardiac health, when her heart is relatively very healthy. Also noticed problems w fine motor control. Doc tried to say it's arthritis but she has no pain.
In nursing school, ataxia is the one phrase I constantly had to Google over and over again. Thinking of it as “not having a taxi,” just makes so much sense now.
Glad you are explaining ataxia and why some of us have problems getting around. No i dont have a sore back or a bad leg. I did not hurt my foot. I have ATAXIA
My teacher showed us 8th graders one of your episodes from the old Disney show about energy. It was my first time ever actually watching an episode. I was never expecting you to upload a video after 15 years.
thats awesome! im glad teachers are still using his old shows. I'm 21 and we used to watch Bill in science class all the time. We even had a Bill Nye club in middle school where we would watch episodes on club day!!
Thank you for sharing. I was diagnosed with this in 2024 and we are actively determining which version of the disease I have. I currently out on short term disability and probably going to long term early next year. My life and families life has changed as a result of this. My prayer is these videos will garner further interest in figuring out this disease. Thanks Bill Nye.
Thank you. My first partner, with whom I shared twenty one wonderful years, died of complications of this condition, twenty one years ago. More education is needed.
Another MS’er here, I have a lesion on my cerebellum and it’s impacted my walking and right hand movement. This video from Bill was so nice to see! It’s great to educate people on what damage in that area can do for motor skills!
Thank you, Bill! I invited you to support our Ataxia Walk N Roll about a decade ago. I am so happy to see you helping raise awareness. I've been a huge fan of yours since I was a kid and you've just leveled up. You're a national and global treasure for science.
My Dad has Ataxia due to Parkinson's, which is not that common. He seemed to get Ataxia instead of the uncontrollable shakes that normally present in Parkinson's. Thank you for shedding some light on this condition. It's not easy watching Dad try to cope with it, and I can't even imagine having to live with it every day.
This just showed up in my recommended and I thought Bill Nye got Ataxia. Never heard of the disease so instantly clicked it and subscribed to the channel. Thanks for everything you have done and everything you're doing Bill. One of the legends who inspired me to appreciate science and engineering.
Hey Mr Nye, thank you for a LIFETIME of curiosity. Between you, Mr Wizard, and the Boy Scouts, I think I was able to increase my scores to join the military. Which allowed me to become a o341/o845 without even graduating from high school or having a GED. Knowledge IS power. To bad I was short on the scores for Mensa, I could use research money for inventions. Forever a teacher, thanks “science guy”
My dad has ataxia, and I rarely see anything about it. I'm gonna send this video to others so they can understand more about it, too! Thank you for breaking it down!
a late family friend of mine was born with a kind of ataxia, he was suspected to die at early age and managed to live a fufilling life until he was 52. my dad still has an old jumper that he was given from him. it was a fleecy thing, from the disabled fishermen. i miss you dearly "uncle slime" simon, you can fish as much as you want now.
Well done. The taxi bit is perfect for helping remember the name of the disease. But all jokes aside this could be a very debilitating condition. Much love and thanks for bringing this into the light. ❤
Bill, I think our families just might be related by common ancestors. We're both Mayflower descendants and have Nye relatives from Cape Cod and Nantucket in our family tree. I didn't even think of the Nye name being related until you mentioned your ancestor from Massachusetts, where we're from. My Mom and his Dad do all the genealogy and I didn't realize I had Nye ties until we married and shared our family history and found ties. The Nye name is a historical Cape Cod name, especially in Sandwich, MA. My husband is more directly a Nye descendant than I am, on his mothers side, while my ties are a lot further back in time from my mother's side. Pretty cool if our Nye's are related. Keep on being great and thank you for all the knowledge you give, you're the BEST science guy! Stay hydrated... (Did you ever read about Peleg Nye? He's definitely an interesting ancestor.)
I am so grateful that you’ve brought Ataxia into the light. My family suffers from SCA3 and we’re studied in the 70s when they called it Machado Joseph Disease ( MJD).
Wow Thank you so much for talking about this!! I would love a longer talk on it. My son has mild ataxia from surgery and a stroke. It’s hard to understand or explain!!
My good friend Sam passed away from Friedreich's Ataxia in May. I miss him terribly, he was a wonderful person who didn't deserve the hand he was dealt. Even after he lost all independance he was incredibly positive, kind, and always there for me. Thank you for bringing awareness to this heartbreaking disease.
Thanks for this vital information, and plug for a useful foundation. Crossed Nye in a kite shop on a boardwalk some years ago as my grandparents were aging. Wish we had these resources then.
My best friend’s mom has ataxia and so does my cousin. It’s so weird to see them progress from being relatively healthy to needing help with everyday things. Thanks for enlightening more people to it, Bill
Bill Nye. Your videos were one of my favorite parts of elementary school and were one small factor in my decision to become an engineer. I give thanks to God for you, sir, and I pray you and your family find the love, peace, and strength found only in Jesus.
We definitely tend to take our mobility for granted until we lose it. Doesn't matter how old or young you are either, because there are so many conditions out there that can cause mobility concerns. For a while my range of motion decreased by quite a bit while edema made it difficult to use and feel my legs and arms normally. It was the most frustrating period of my life besides when I was a teenager and had agoraphobia and panic disorder. Not being able to get dressed or brush my teeth normally was godawful. I felt so dang slow. I'm fortunate enough that over the course of a year my mobility returned and the edema went away, and now I only have some minor decreased ROM that still affects certain activities but is nothing like how it was before
Good to see you Bill, I doubt you remember me but when we met and you signed your book for me, that’s a day I doubt I’ll ever forget. Thanks for being that science guy.
Thank you for all you do to communicate science to layman like me. It's wonderful to see that you're still here to teach us! But I have to... I'm sorry... BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL NYE THE REAL COOL GUY
Knew what this condition was and was so concerned for a second that Bill had ataxia himself. But I'm still greatly saddened that his family members or anyone for that matter has to suffer with this. I'm very happy he's using his platform to raise money and awareness for this condition. Side note: I actually have a condition called ataxic cerebral palsy. It tends to be milder than other forms of cerebral palsy and in my case I'm very mildly affected. But despite being a very different condition than the ataxia Bill is talking about (it's not heritable, genetic, or progressive/degenerative by definition), it's kind of a similar etiology. Results from brain damage to the cerebellum before, during, or shortly after birth and affects balance/coordination/visual-spatial abilities.
I did not know there was a term for limited movement. Very interesting, thank you, Bill! I love going for long walks, it's one of my favorite things to do to keep me busy. :)
Oh wow! Sorry to hear but informative as I didn't know it was also a genetic disorder of its own. I have ataxia due to chronic fatigue syndrome, when I'm crashing suddenly I can't lift things, walk, lift utensils, my speech is slurred, etc. Cause is the autonomic system going bonkers (dysautonomia) for most of us though. Hope you are getting all the help you need!
On behalf of people affected by Ataxia, thank you, Bill! Sharing your story will teach so many new people about this rare disease. Let's find a cure!
Such a good communicator too. ❤

It was always a great day in middle school when we got to watch your videos! Now, almost 20 years later, you're still teaching me things!
So nice to see you old man. Used to watch the show and that's what inspired me to science. I'm so grateful for whatever you did. Thanks
I have Ataxia caused by HOD in my medulla & Ataxia comes from my cerebellum! You’re the best, Bill Nye!
I remember supporting a movie about you, and in it you mention not having kids because of the possibility of passing down the ataxia gene. 😢
