So the Wood Elf Dragon was actually based upon the generic Elf Dragon model that was used for the High and Dark Elves, both of which had plastic parts to help diferentiate. The Wood Elf one was all sculped and probably one of the last big metal models. They were amazing!

So not that it really matters, but the brettonian king isn't riding a griffin, that's what Karl Franz rides, he rides a hippogriff, which is essentially a griffin, but the brettonians get those models while the empire gets (very limited) griffins, it is however worth noting that the orginal source that invented hippogriffs had them as a cross breed between griffins and mares, next fantasy wasn't grimdark, it was a dark fantasy, people won great battles, but there was untold horrors, great heros, and villians.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles had the best fantasy lore outside of perhaps Tolkien. For me it peaked around 6th edition (around the year 2000), when it was still a very _grimdark_ setting. Before the models started to grow larger and more cartoonish in order to appeal to even younger audiences. This was also the time when _Mordheim_ came out and interestingly we're seeing that game really grow a lot in popularity at the moment.

Serpentine Dragons are peak GW dragon for me, the original Forest Dragon in particular (which had a Glade Lord as the rider). The current dragon sculpts to me are very much generic western dragon, you could have Sean Connery voice it and nobody would bat an eye while asking you when they made Dragonheart minis. The serpentine nature of the WHFB Elven dragons gives them a mixture of western and eastern aesthetic that makes it unique in my opinion, and fits with the 'other-worldy-ness' of the elves.

You hit the nail on the head when you said charm and character even if you feel those words don’t hold any meaning. The new models are amazing, but I won’t remember them. They’re not particularly fun, I don’t get the same sense of joy and I don’t believe that’s because I’m an adult now. I think it’s the same with many things, it’s why people prefer classic cars, or 80’s movies. Yeah the new shiny thing is technically better, probably more reliable etc. they have no charm or character. It just doesn’t hit in the same way. There’s no journey in new shiny things because they mostly work, old Warhammer, old films, old cars, they were clunky. You would work your hands raw getting stuff to work and you’d swear through gritted teeth. There’s a real hands on and tangible experience you got with those things that you don’t really get now. Yes WH is still hands on, but your tools are better made, you have adult strength to open paint bottles, you follow instructions and build correctly. The journey is there but it’s different. And the end product is generally just a bit meh. Whereas a wonky as fuck dragon hopping off a stone, probably toppling over constantly, big gaps between its joints, stuck together with green stuff and nothing else because you’ve got no idea what you’re doing, that end result is fucking rad and you loved every second of it even when it drove you mad.

Ok a few terms you used quite wrong:
Renaissance: Describes the Period between the 15th to 17th century, the beginning of the historical categorisatoin "early modern age".
Bretonia is representing arthurian and grail legends, wich peak around 12th and 14th century. This era is the "High Medival Period" and the "Late Medival Period".
The Empire under Karl Franz on the other hand is definitly 16-17th century (renaissance / early modern) germany at the End of the Maximilan Period (overlap of late medival and early modern age).
Btw the "soulblight gravelords" skeletons and grave guard are from around 2007 and have been released years ahead of the newer tomb kings miniatures as part of the 7th Edition release for vampire counts, together with the Vargulf, Ghouls, the now finecast Vampire Lords and no longer availible Blood Knight miniatures made from metal.

sisters of twilight on forest dragon on the cover of a white dwarf sitting on the rack at barnes and noble was what got me into miniatures. i bought that white dwarf and the rest is history. I ended up not getting that model or even getting into fantasy mostly cause it was all 40k at the game store. I quickly found the Tau Battlesuits and Firewarriors, and cut my wargaming teeth with 4 edition tau....

Have you seen how big a warhorse would have to be in order to carry a fully armored knight on its back along tack, saddle, and barding? Three grown men can stand in a line next to a horse and take up roughly the same space on the ground as the horse. The warhorse was most likely around the same size as a Clydesdale, possibly larger, and those are massive.

I will forever regret that I never got a box of Bretonian Men at Arms. Never got the shaggy dog and snail bits. I used to try and collect all the little critters like the Fanatic Beetle, Powder Keg monkey, etc.
That Wood Elf dragon is the second version of it after they added the forest spirits and new characters. Mine was stolen from my car with a bunch of other kits after I was paid in models for painting the murals on the walls at DakkaDakka.

  • @neverokay8

There's something over the top, almost cartoonish, trippy, super old school high fantasy about all these models. I think when Warhammer Fantasy started, they were reacting to the existing field of wargames, which were all about historical accuracy and realism, making proper proportions and historically accurate weapons and outfits fundamental. I love it that old school Warhammer Fantasy seems to really have said: F that, we're doing HIGH Fantasy, elves, goblins, fairies, wizards and demons.. and stylistically focused on things that just visually just *pop* when you look at them from a distance on a battlefield. The painting style also was super bright, intense colors.. not realistic or 'grimdark' but visually stunning. When I see photos of armies in the old issues of White Dwarf I'm still drooling as if I am that kid again, 25+ years ago. I really miss that period of Warhammer.

Started order draconis then (all dragon princes and lord's on dragon) as a passion project but they then discontinued faction support. I was devasted.
Flash forward to now, I am one month in to my 12 month no-buy challenge and keeping a book of everything I cover. My order draconis will be finished and proudly displayed in my cabinets or taken out to play against newer players to aos who want a win. You forgot to list imrik on minaithnir too! His old-old model I believe inspired the newer dragon prince designs

In my opinion, once old world (warhammer) re-launches, it's going to Eclipse Age of Sigmar in popularity. I could be out of touch though, but Total War Warhammer has done amazing things for the popularity of the world, meanwhile next to nobody knows anything about Sigmar except for the very specific people playing it.

I still have my Bretonnian army, waiting for GW to maybe bring them back in the old world (yeah right...) but the nice thing with those knight is you want every knight to be ''unique'' they are all lord of their own, so they cannot all bear the same color. Personnaly I took 5 color and mix 2 color on each knight, so i have a lot of combination of color combo
