@@brittreacts beloved legend. Like You :-) this is a great song and so highly commercialized over the years it is impossible not to know. Btw in an interview, Billy Joel said Stevie Winwood was his favorite rock pianist. While those opinions change like the seasons for artistry, he spoke a feeling. I love Joe Jackson, but could argue myself into a new opinion 4 times a year. Bless you and yours and Christmas cheer with good health,
Absolutely love this song!!! It is a Higher Love!! Steve Winwood is amazing and a legend. In the recorded version, Chaka Kahn sings the female part!!!! Fantastic!!!!! And another great song by him is Valerie!!! Another one of many!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Steve Winwood is an excellent musical rabbit hole to dive into. My favorite solo song is "While You See A Chance" from his first solo album, Arc Of A Diver. The title song is pretty good, too. My fave song ever of his is "Gimme Some Lovin'" from his days in the Spencer Davis Group. His super soulful vocals carry that song.
Yes, "While You See A Chance" is amazing. I have been known to put it on repeat for hours. Although I am always struck by the contrast between his really good music, lyrics, and vocals and the amusingly bad quality (by modern standards) of the visuals of many of his music videos. I suppose it's because of the era in which they were produced, but still...
Steve Winwood came up in 60s Britain as a musical prodigy, playing keys in Spencer Davies Group at 16 years old. But where his contemporaries were preoccupied with the blues, he had an affinity for soul, (perhaps because he played keys and not the guitar). Which this track obviously is an example of, beneath the very 80s production. And of course the backing vocals ooze with soul, it's the queen herself ms Chaka Khan doing them. You can even see glimpses of her in the video.
You may know this song because they released a version by Whitney Houston that was previously unreleased, and it was remixed and updated. On this version, Chaka Khan is doing the background vocals!! She is in the official video, This isn't the official video.
Before watching your reaction to this one, I know from watching you for a good period, you will absolutely love this track and add it to your Playlist His island themed sound, and spiritual message are right in your comfort zone If you want to check out his early work, go to songs by his former band's, Spencer Davies group, & TRAFFIC Just as Eric Clapton's early guitar work can be heard on songs by CREAM
Steve Winwood has been a musical influence since the mid-sixties, originating in England. He started out with the Spencer Davis Group, in 1963, when he was 15 years old. When he was 18 he co-founded the group "Traffic." "Blind Faith" came next, followed by "Blind Faith" in 1969 with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. He finally went solo in '77 and with each group he found massive success. Songs to check out next: "I'm A Man", "Gimme Some a Lovin'", "Mr. Fantasy", "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", "Can't Find My Way Home", Valerie" "Arc of a Diver" and the list goes on. Steve Winwood has a deep rabbit hole to explore.
You definitely need to check out early Steve Winwood. He was in the band Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, and as a teen, "Can't Find My Way Home" sounded like it was a song from a grizzled, worn out man. This iteration of Winwood sort of reminds me of Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates.
When I saw "early Steve Winwood" I immediately thought of the band Traffic, whin - in turn - made me thing of "The Low Spark ofHight Heeled Boys". It's a vibe...
Britt, Whitney Houston did a cover of this song for the "I'm your baby Tonight" album 1990. But, it was only a bonus track on the "Japanese" release. And then later in 2019, it had a Dance Re-Mix by DJ Kygo. You might have heard that one also. UA-cam search Whitney Higher love. 😉👍
Great reaction, Brit! This song was out during Steve's solo period. Prior to that time, he was in several GREAT bands going back to the 60s: The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic.
Whitney Houston covered this song as a duet with Kygo. Possibly where you've heard it. Also, if you like a female percussionist singing, check out Shelia E.
Great singer....😎 Steve Winwood was only 14 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group. Check out when he sang 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' with the group Traffic, hell of a song...
No one else sings this that I know of, this is all Steve Winwood, one of his biggest solo hits. Chaka Khan on background vocals adds a great touch on the album version. Steve Winwood is a true LEGEND! His vocals are immediately recognizable. This video is actually lip synced to the album version and not a true live video.
Britt, You may like Bobby Darin. Popular in the 50’s & 60’s . He was Super Cool; like a young Frank Sinatra. He sided at 37 in 1973. Songs to try …Mac the Knife, Beyond the Sea, & Dream Lover are my favorites.
You should also check out his songs "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do" and "Can't Find My Way Home" (which is from when he was in the band Traffic). And my personal favorite, "There's a River" was used in a very famous death scene in Miami Vice. I'd love this song played at my funeral. ua-cam.com/video/4J9SQBwM_ew/v-deo.html&pp=ygUdc3RldmUgd2lud29vZCB0aGVyZSdzIGEgcml2ZXI%3D
When this came out in 1986(?), it spent a lot of time in heavy rotation on my car stereo cassette. The studio version of the song has back up and harmony vocals featuring the inimitable Chaka Khan. Lately, Steve Winwood has done backup vocals with his daughter Lilly singing the lead. Very nice as well!
Im a big fan of Steve!! But this one ----needs the official Video ........then you will remember!! This is a good version but......if you know--you know---
VA Tech Football has used Enter Sandman as their run on field song for years. The band gave permission and even went live on the Jumbotron at a game once.
You were talking about women and drums and vocals. Maybe you should check out the Christian Rock group Skillet!! Jen Ledger is an amazing drummer and vocalist. I suggest Awake and Alive! But really anything they do is amazing!
The female voice in this song is the one and only Chaka Khan.
Legend!!!

The official video is worth seeing because it features professional dancers for Britt, and Chaka Khan on backing vocals.
She would have loved seeing Chaka
This one is close but I like the studio version better too!
I'm in bed yelling "IT'S CHAKA KHAN CHAKA KHAN DAMMIT!!". My wife's wondering what's up.
Lol!

I totally forgot that album, but it's great!

It was also in "Sing 2" movie. Awesome reaction as always, Brit.
Chaka- who provided backup vocals for the original recording - also recorded a version of her own

It has a little hint of a gospel song in its sound. I love both versions of it.

This album is amazing from first song to last. You MUST check out the song "Back in the High Life"
Great reaction, Brit! This song was out during Steve's solo period. Prior to that time, he was in several GREAT bands going back to the 60s: The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic.

his best song is, IMHO, Valerie (the *1987* version).
Great singer....😎 Steve Winwood was only 14 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group.

Okay Brit, it’s a must that you listen to “Split Decision” by Steve Winwood, with the infamous Eric Clapton Live! You will love it!
"Congas", not bongos. Bongos are the small, connected drums that you hold between your knees while seated, often associated with Hawaiian music.
Britt,

Glad to see you are still duelling with the head cushion on your headphones. The cushion seems to be winning😂
Whatch his ROLL WITH IT video-it will change your life. You'll put him in the PDC immediately.
The Finer Things, and the movie Date with an Angel, are the first things that come to mind from Steve. Do love this song, and others though.
You should also check out his songs "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do" and "Can't Find My Way Home" (which is from when he was in the band Traffic). Check out young Steve Winwood. 🤯
It was in Sing 2. You should check out his song "Valerie". It's 100% going on your playlist.
You will be adding him to the PDC very soon...
🤔🤔
You want soul? Roll With It, also by Steve Winwood.
Though this is actually Steve Winwood's song, you also reacted to Kelly Clarkson performing it live a few months ago.
Spencer Davis Group. 14 year old Steve Winwood.
And definitely the Whitney version is what youre thinking about
Check out Steve Winwood- Roll With It.

The original female singer was Chaka Khan.
You should also hear Steve's song Christmas is Drawing Near at hand.

This reminds me of calypso.
Im a big fan of Steve!! But this one ----needs the official Video ........then you will remember!! This is a good version but......if you know--you know---
This is the official, original version that came out in 1986. Whitney's version came out in 1990.
