    Wow wow wow! Thank you guys for the love on the video! The wrestling fans on are on me heavy so I wanted to say a few things:
    1. My bad for calling wrestling fake😂 I definitely know that the hits and slams are real, but lots of it is predetermined/scripted like a lot of you were saying.
    2. Looking into the story more on my own i did see that there was a 6th brother which I think was even more tragic
    Very glad you guys enjoyed it and thank you for showing love! 🤎🤎🤎

      No saying it’s fake, it’s disrespectful. Theirs wrestlers who have serious injuries ACL , got paralyze, tearing quads , broken arms/legs. They are stunt performers acting telling a story in the ring.

      I get what you mean by fake but yeah 🤷🏾‍♂️😂 predetermined/script is the correct term for it cuz pro wrestlers get injured just as much as other athletes(football players, basketball players, boxers, etc) & a lot of them are never the same after their careers are over.
      And girl yes 🤣🤣🤣 of course they’re not hitting each other for real, they over exaggerate a lot of moves; it’s Campy, Violent & Fun 🥰 think of it as Broadway on crack & steroids 🤣
      some wrestlers do hurt each other by mistake tho, some things can go wrong 🤷🏾‍♂️
      I remember being 7 years old watching WWE Smackdown & was clueless as you were 🤣🤣🤣 but I couldn’t stop watching it & wanted to see more.
      Sadly wrestlers doing drugs & alcohol was so normal back especially steroids cuz back then you had to look big in order to make it.

      Just came by your channel to see this reaction. I’m a longtime pro-wrestling fan; and I watched the Von Erichs every Saturday night on local television. This film really delved into their story. The two standout performances were Zac Efron as Kevin and Jeremy Allen White as Kerry. I actually saw Kerry wrestle at a house show for the WWF (now WWE) in January of ‘92, about a year before he took his life. He was really talented.

    The saddest part was that there was a SIXTH brother who also took his own life. He was left out because of runtime and that his death was eerily like Kerry, and would feel too tragic, redundant and unbelievable for audiences.

      One of the very rare times where the real story is less believable and more tragic than the one portrayed on screen, crazy.

      Yeah the reality was somehow worse in a lot of ways. David also had a daughter who died as an infant.
      And yeah Chris dying was as sad as any of them. He wanted to be a wrestler more than anything but was very small and had asthma (the medication for which gave him weak bones).
      And it wasn't a tragedy in the same way, but they also introduced a fake Von Erich cousin, Lance. It was just in very questionable taste and Kerry had to go out into the ring and admit to everyone that he wasn't really related and wouldn't be wrestling with them any more.
      Then there were numerous other crazy deaths of main figures in that wrestling territory. Gino Hernandez, Bruiser Brody, Chris Adams.
      I grew up near Dallas and was a fan as a kid in the 80s. It was messed up to go from them being as big as the Beatles in that area to so much devastating loss. The movie did a great job, thought I had a hard time not being pulled out of it by all the little changes. That's probably any biopic if you know everything about it though.

      A very similar thing happened in Jersey Boys, of all things, where the death of Frankie Valli's second daughter (fell off a fire escape) was cut out completely because one daughter was enough. The more you know.

    The movie RADICALLY underplays what a huge scumbag Fritz was.

      Fritz also had severe brain cancer at the time he did that so Kevin has also said he doesn't believe his father would do that if he was of sound mind. @@BriSand1993Fritz also pushed Kerry to train on a broken foot that was not healed up, leading to the foot being amputated.
      Most victims of terrible parents will take their parents side and defend them. He might still have lived his dad, but his dad was clearly an ahole. That wasn't really disputed by anyone, including fellow wrestlers who's spoken out in later years.

      @@systerkeno You're free to have that opinion about the man but the truth is neither you or I really knew him so none of us can be sure about anything. I don't think Fritz was a good father but we don't know what he truly thought or felt. Kevin was the closest one who'll ever know the real truth because he lived it himself and never thought ill of his father at all. If you've seen Kevin talk about his father in any interview he almost gushes like a little boy about his superhero. It also doesn't change the fact that the movie still made up lies to make him look even worse such as doctoring the books, threatening to disown Kevin if he sold which is false because Fritz wanted to sell but it was Kevin and Kerry who were against it and also Kevin strangling him at the end because Kevin wasn't even there Fritz was the one who found Kerry after Kevin called him.

    • @systerkeno
      @systerkeno 3 місяці тому +5

      @@BriSand1993 There were actually problems with the books. That was quite the problem throughout different NWA organizations.
      Kevin has also told stories of his dad being violent and other people who knew Fritz have told stories about how he was.
      The solomonster video on this topic is probably the best take on UA-cam when it comes to this subject. That man seems like a POS and deserves to be portrayed as one. Maybe shown some more of the negative stories and also put in some of the nice stories. Because it's almost never all black or white. But overall, for a movie very loosely based on true incidents, it was good IMO.

    • @BriSand1993
      @BriSand1993 3 місяці тому +4

      @@systerkeno I don't have a problem with the movie at all. I also believe with all the stories that are out there Fritz was indeed a tyrant but real people are more complicated and I'm not going to be that person who's going to say this is what was in his head or this is what he was feeling in that exact moment because we'll never really know. Kevin's point of view is his father was a good man and he accepted him flaws and all. Considering he's the last survivor of this tragedy why should we strangers be the ones to dictate how he should feel about the situation. It also isn't hard to believe if you're not a well liked individual people are going to lie about you.

I’m sure how the crowd reacts to a person and other factors also go into writing a persons storyline. I think in the case of the Von Erich family, the dad was essentially the one choosing which one of his sons would be the getting their storyline pushed towards the public while the others wait for their time to shine.

    The Soviets had invaded Afghanistan and so in protest of that invasion President Jimmy Carter ordered the boycott of Summer Olympics which were being held in Moscow, preventing any American participation in the event. Kerry was a discus thrower, like his father. Fritz was going to go the Olympics when he was younger, but when he got married the AAU wouldn't pay for him to travel, so he missed out on going too. Apparently, Fritz's best recorded throw prior to the Olympics would've been enough to win Gold, and held the Texas state high school record, until Kerry beat it.

    I feel like "scripted" is a better term as opposed to calling it fake. And honestly the athleticism it takes to perform a choreographed fight without hurting your opponent (too much) is so much more than if they were actually physically trying to hurt the other person. And obviously accidents do happen. One wrong move...
    This movie does change a bit from the actual story. There was another brother named Chris who ended up shooting himself as well. Mike willingly stepped into the ring, he wasn't forced into it though everyone agrees he and Chris both had no business competing at the level their brothers did. And their parents are definitely vilified in this movie. Kevin and the interviews I've seen discussing Fritz (the dad) talk about what a caring a loving man he was up until the brain cancer started causing dementia right before his death.

My family has also went through several tragedies of suicide, accidental death, and drug overdose so this movie made me cry. I have not cried in over 10 years.

    I only got to see Kerri a few times after he joined the then-WWF (now WWE). You couldn’t even tell he was missing part of his leg from what I remember.
    The worst part of this movie is just knowing what is going to happen, but getting so invested in the story that it still makes you lose it and break down in tears.
    As for curses…Plenty of families feel like they have a curse in some way. In truth, it’s just a series of bad choices that lead to something destructive and catastrophic happening in most cases. Sometimes it’s sudden, other times it is drawn out.
    David was sudden. Mike felt so much pressure to take David’s spot and immediately got hurt and felt like he was a disappointment. That came from him giving into their father’s demanding expectations. Kerri was a long term issue that started with a single bad decision of driving his motorcycle after drinking.
    Other families had things, too. You mentioned the Kennedy’s. Another wrestling family that seemed to have a curse are the Harts. Lots of tragedy there, too.
    Most issues for both of those families were, again, results of poor decisions in many cases. Some not their fault.

    According to a couple of the wrestlers that went against the Von Erichs they would hit hard. Their biggest rivals in their show were a trio of wrestlers that called themselves The Fabulous Freebirds. In their matches they would want to look as real as possible so there was an understanding between all of them, "Try not to knock each other's teeth out, don't break bones, but everything else was fair game." In other words, they beat each other up.

    Wrestling IS NOT FAKE. It’s pre-determined. The only thing scripted is the finish to a match. Otherwise, what the wrestlers do in the ring is completely improvised and “called” between the participants. As long as they tell a good story in the ring and get to the finish it’s good.

      also the assumption that any of the brothers ever hated/began to hate wrestling...you see Kevin struggling with his belief in the curse, and eventually quitting wrestling over the loss of his brothers, but he didn't blame wrestling or hate it, he just couldn't go on because it's a constant reminder that he lost what he loved most about it.
      Kerry looked proud and genuinely happy to become a wrestler along his brothers, even if he had participated in the Olympics I'm sure he would've transitioned into wrestling eventually...it's just that an Olympic medal is valued higher, so that was the dream goal.
      And Michael probably pressured himself to fill David's shoes after his passing just as much as Fritz did.
      Wrestling was as much part of their family as any member of it. It's a family business in which his father became a household name, running a promotion no less, it's what gave them a home and it's what gave them instant name recognition when they made their debut...they were PROUD to become wrestlers like their father who's a legend in the business. And they were pround to fulfill his dream of bringing the title into the family.
      Also on that note, Kevin said in an interview that despite his father "seeming" cruel and cold, that there's no animosity there and that he's thankful for his father "making us strong"...because at the time and in this business, it's not necessarily bad

As a veteran, I was appalled to hear him say no tears after their brother passed. That is their brother. Let alone you have soldiers who lose best friends and have to grieve too. I am so glad I had an amazing father who showed me what truly being a man is like. He was strong, loving, compassionate, firm and gentle, but I always saw him a father bear..aka you don't poke the bear :). Kind of why I hate the term toxic masculinity or femininity as toxic behaviors are just that toxic and both sexes can portray them. There is nothing masculine about bullying or manipulating your children.
    I love that you caught how he said he wanted them to pursue other things but deep down he kept pushing them towards his goal not their own. Horrible parenting.

    Pro Wrestling started as real fighting but then the promoters and wrestlers found they could make it look more exciting and earn more money if they fixed the fights and planned who won. Back before the 70s most of the matches were not preplanned down to the moves just who won. The wrestlers would call moves in the ring to feed off the crowd. There are some ways to make moves hurt less but they still do all that stuff and it all still hurts.

    I was a huuuuge Von Erich fan. There were some inconsistencies in the film, but it was very well done. When Kerry won the world title on 5/6/84, his mother was at Texas Stadium, not watching at home. Kerry was champion for 18 days. He didn't lose his foot until 2 years later, in 1986. The doctors originally saved his foot, but he tried to walk on it prematurely, which damaged it so bad that they had no other option but to amputate. From my understanding, the portrayal of the mom Doris was completely off. She was a great mom. When Kevin moved the family to Hawaii, his mother was also there until she passed away in 2015 at age 82. She divorced Fritz after 42 years of marriage because she blamed him for the deaths of her kids. I really dont know how Kevin went on with life after losing so much. I remember him once saying that he went into a gun store and tried to steal a rifle because he wanted to go to jail. The owner of the store watched him put the rifle down his pants and just said to him, "I love you Kev". Kevin put the rifle on the counter and left. Makes me love and respect him even more than I do.

    Pro Wrestling is probably the hardest sport for a body and mind to handle because it's a combination the rock n roll life style just constantly on the road while never having time to recover or see your family, plus bodybuilding..which ain't healthy, plus combat sports with potential for very serious injuries, while being in character and public speaking in front of a large crowd and never breaking character even when injured. Most people can't even speak in front of large crowds. Haha. You should really check out the Kevin or Kerry vs Rick Flair match at Texas Stadium. That era of wrestling was insane, and Ric Flair promos at that time were legendary.

    Beyond the prestige of being recognized as the best by the promoters, getting a run as World Champion could make you a life-changing amount of money. Every time the champion wrestled, he got 10% of the gate. In better paying territories like St. Louis or the Carolinas, the champion was making over $5,000 a night by the time the brothers were being considered as serious contenders.

  • @BriSand1993
    @BriSand1993 3 місяці тому +3

    The real Kevin was not a fan of how the movie portrayed his parents. Kevin has never blamed his father for what happened to his brothers. If you watch the Dark Side of the Ring episode about the Von Erichs Kevin talks about how much he loved and admired his father's wrestling talent and he believes his parents were forever changed by the death of their first child Jack Jr and he believes that's why his father became as tough and strict as he was. A lot of other people who knew Fritz don't have many nice things to say about him which has fed a narrative Kevin has never liked about a man who didn't love his kids and forced them to do what he wanted. I personally believe Fritz does bear a lot of the responsibility for starting his sons out so young in a hard partying industry but Kevin has said Fritz was never abusive toward them. Kevin sympathizes with his father a lot because one thing that wasn't discussed is when Fritz was a child his own father forced him to fight other boys in the neighborhood and the father would make money off it. I myself don't think Fritz is the saint Kevin makes him out to be but this movie really went out of its way to make him a villain. The actor who portrayed him even said he was saddened that a lot of scenes that humanized his character were cut from the final film.

    Wrestling genuinely isn’t “fake”. Yes, the outcome is decided before, things are choreographed and rehearsed, but a lot of the hits are real. Especially when you hit the ground, and plenty of times kicks to the face connect very hard (it’s harder to soften kicks than punches). Wrestlers are taught to downplay hits, how to fall without hurting yourself too bad, but the risk of injury is VERY real. People have been seriously injured, paralysed, even died from a fight. From a former female wrestler who never got to fully go pro due to a serious injury in the ring, trust me, it isn’t fake. Scripted, yeah, most of the time. But terrible things can easily happen.

    The hits, the emotion of the match is all part of the wrestler's performance in order to tell the story that leads to the pre determined result. Bill Mercer and others said it also. But Fritz came up being raised by parents that went through the Great Depression. That made the people of that generation tough and always saving money and anything they thought they needed. My Dad's family was from Dalton, Georgia during the depression and he spoke of how his folks nearly starved as did so many others. That made that generation not as freely spending as we are now. Fritz was very tight with company money but bought those boys everything they ever wanted growing up. I suspect he was gruff at times and very good at others.
