Ali Ibrahim Toure is a one time in a century kind of artist. His works are marvelous. There isn't any bad music where Ali was there. His collaboration with Ry cooder and Toumani Diabate are some of the proofs. His albums Niafunke, Svane, Ali Farka Toure and The river ( not in any particular order) are at the top of the specimens of African music.
C'est magique.... : On comprend que Ali Farka Touré fasse partie du classement mondial des meilleures guitaristes Et puis j'adore ce qui passe entre les deux musiciens: le plaisir de jouer et de partager: c'est çà l'esprit Africain!

Our Beloved Ali Farke Toure is sheer magic ... Vieux is certainly doing his father proud with his own amazing artistry ... How great it would have been to have them both performing at the 2010 African World Cup ... sigh ... For many of us ... Ali will live on indefinitely ...
Ed Helium Uhhhhh....No! Robert Johnson and others preceded Ali Farka. There are similarities in music from many cultures, however, the blues no more had its roots in Africa than it did in Native American music, Oriental music, Russian balalaika tunes.
Yukon Woman I have been reading & 'hearing' that blues came from Africa, over the 50 years I have been collecting & playing. You are way out on your own, Thanks for discussion. All the best. P.S.No one has ever called me 'simple minded'.
If you like Ali, you should check out his son Vieux Farka Toure. Very different both in musical approach and guitar technique. Much more African...works with traditional materials...but you can also see some incredible resemblances, not least of which is the utter and effortless command of the instrument.
I don't think anyone is denying that blues grew out of African music. But as a distinct form, it did in fact come together in the US, and European music is also an influence, if for no other reason than the Africans had to adapt their music to European instruments, which had a different set of intervals than the ones that came from Africa. Much of what makes the blues unique is the minor over major tension that resulted. Don't deny the invention of the Africans forced to come to America.
les mots me maque comme ma dit ma mere les bonne sauces ne dure pas dans la marmite ali grand frere tu na pas vecu unitil sur cette terre des homme repose en paix que allah tacorde le paradis amin
Beautiful.Thankyou.I first saw Ali Farka Toure what must be getting on for twenty five years ago in Aldershot of all places.A great musician, sadly missed.
But it is fascinating to hear it having returned to its old stomping ground. A West African musician can at the very least add an extra dimension to it.
A great artist and a great man! If a fraction of the celebrities were as talented and socially conscious as Ali was, we'd have better music and a better world. RIP, you're sorely missed!
Da' blu's is the blu's...no matter be it Robert, Muddy or Skip James...be it B.B or Albert...no matter...like John Lee Hooker say....serve you right to suffer, it serves you right to be alone... in dese's TB sheets...dey's a-killin' me.... have mercy on da' black-man....Lawd have mercy on dese's blu's
Because the most popular guitarists get voted ahead of the actual best. Also it is always going to be a matter of personal taste. Have you seen any Manitas de Plata videos? The second we start wondering who is best, we have stopped appreciating what we are hearing.
I am originally from Asia, never heard this brilliant artist before. Recently discovered him, he is one of the best.

HeavyMental I have never heard anyone deny that the roots of blues are African.
Yukon Woman
Why insult people by calling them simple-minded, because your views differ from theirs?

Ali Farka Toure deserves a Museum/Movie ( there’s a documentary that could be improved ) in Mali.
