Fleet Admiral Sengoku was attempting to play some 4D chess with the execution of Ace - for one, he wanted to very publically broadcast the government wiping out the lineage of the pirate king, but he ALSO wanted to use the execution as a trap for Whitebeard so that they could take out one of the yonko. If they had simply executed ace, Whitebeard would have launched a more concentrated strategic assault at a time when the bulk of the navy's might wasn't concentrated in one place.
the mark for liking it is Arlong park, sets the tone for the rest of the series, but Marineford changes the status quo of the whole series, since the events are big enough to change the world

One of the best war arcs in anime because it feels like a war. With ebbs and flows and tactics. Even propaganda. I say that as opposed to smashing action figures together. And then Shanks single-handedly stops it. Overall, lots of emotional gut punches.
The reason the world government gave ace a public execution was 1: a show of force And 2: a way of forcing a confrontation with whitebeard and his crew so that they could trap and kill them Sengoku NEVER intended on killing ace early, not only would it make it seem like the world government was panicking but if ace was dead it would potentially give whitebeard a reason to quit the war early and save his men by leaving, sengoku didn't announce that the execution was being moved up, he sent that information privately on a "secure" line that he knew was compromised in an attempt to manipulate whitebeard into rushing into a trap, this is all explained by whitebeard
Also Koby’s moment was what led shanks to get there and stop the war to save Luffy. Truly a great moment, a mere recruit standing up to one of the top 10 strongest in the verse

He is still different from thanos though because when we see thanos pre infinity war, he is always doing nothing but sitting on a chair giving orders. Blackbeard is constantly active. Attacking drum island, gathering crewmates on jaya, hunting luffy and then changing his target to ace to replace crocodile as warlord. Breaking into impel down for more crewmates, AND killing a yonko to take his fruit and replace him as yonko. while we get little screen time with characters like backboard and thanos the main difference is how active they are while we rant seeing them. if thanos was like Blackbeard then at the end of every other marvel movie, we would've seen him get an infinity stone and get closer to his goal.
You need to see so many scenes from Marineford in the anime: ace being liberated, luffys arrival, luffy vs garp, aces death of course, whitebeards speech, the arc is si good in the anime, except for whitebeards damage.

My stand on ace and his "lacking" deathscene is this. Ace didnt get the background and exploration needed for his death to truly hit as a loss of acharacter. Ace dying feels less like the climax of his story and more like a flame being snuffed out before it could grow. About if Garp could take on luffy. Pretty much everyone significant at the war (-a select few) were alot more powerful than luffy. It was pretty clear that luffy was very much a fish out of water in this.

Theres a lot that could be debated about why they didnt just kill Ace immediately in any old fashion. I personally would say that a large portion of the Marines truly see themselves as being a form of justice that protects citizens and that they are keeping the world safe and are the law. Thus in large part they want to do things by the book and prove that they arent just thugs, they are the ones in power and doing things for justice by a lawful code. Therefore they want his execution to be done properly BY the official executioners in right way with Marine Polearms piercing them. Up until things were getting a bit too spicy for them Sengoku felt like it wasnt a big deal to keep up that façade. The simple way of putting it is that the Marines were cocky and felt like they could win this war without any chance of Ace being free'd, so there was no reason for them to not put on a show as they usually do to prove their superiority.
Jimbe random warlord is important moving forward Benny. But if you do read back he actually has moments with Ace during impel down that draws jimbe to have a relationship with Luffy and causing this type of bond. Benny honestly can’t wait till you read a know more about him

I never tell people Skypiea is a turning point, even though I love it, because Skypiea is pure One Piece, it’s an adventure in a totally unbelievable fantastical place. But the enjoyment of Skypiea is directly linked to how into One Piece you are at its core. If you’re on the fence still at Skypiea, it’s not going to be the “holy shit” arc that alabasta or Enies Lobby are.
I started reading One Piece way back when it was first being translated by Viz. I dropped it after the chopper arc because at the time Naruto was just so much better to me. The art and the chunin exams just hit differently. Ever since then I’ve read the start of every One Piece arc for like 20 chapters then I drop it. Ow that I know One Piece is in its final arc I’ve decided to reread everything. I’m around chapter 700 and the manga is pretty good. It’s got some arcs that I don’t really care about, but overall I enjoy it. One of my favorite arcs is skypiea. Always weird to me how people sleep on it, but I also don’t really care about fishman island. Just wanted it to end, felt like it dragged.

I think the moment with Shanks wasn't fully about his personal power, everyone in his crew is a top tier fighter the way it works with Film Red, as far as I understand it, is that all the flashback stuff with Uta is canon but the present-day events of the movie are not.

After Enies Lobby their public image was getting lower for sure. They cut the camera feed halfway through when they realized that WB was no going to go down easily and that it wasn't going to just go smoothly. They didn't want to show the world them struggling. The announcement that Ace would be executed early was also to try to bait WB into being more reckless. Executing Ace was just a red herring for the world, and the true goal was showing the world that they can defeat even WB. Also, yes, Garp is a million times stronger than Luffy. If he wanted to stop Luffy, he 100% could have.

So regarding the movie canon. Starting with Strong World, usually the major antagonist is canon to some extent and appear very vaguely in the story. Shiki and Uta have appeared essentially in the background of the manga, chapter 0 (Which was made to promote the moving Strong World, aka the only movie written by Oda himself. [You have reached the point in One Piece where you can read it and watch the movie without spoilers]) is canon. I think Zed is canon. However the events of the movies are not canon. Basically none of them fit into the timeline correctly and the events of the movies are never referenced in the main story.

My stand on ace and his "lacking" deathscene is this. Ace didnt get the background and exploration needed for his death to truly hit as a loss of acharacter. BUT his sheer cool factor being an absolute badass who fought smoker/blackbeard combined with luffys gutwrenching reaction made his death beautiful. Ace dying feels less like the climax of his story and more like a flame being snuffed out before it could grow. Despite having barely any major scenes, Ace and Smoker are my favorite characters in the show simply bwcause of their mannerisms and personalities. Clthe cool factor is so underrated as a character trait.

The reason why the navy didn't immediately kill Ace is that they wanted to give the pirates hope they were going to save him. Once they were well inside Marineford, they wanted to annihilate them by encirclement. You saw their attempt at that later.
There is an actual seperate canon manga volume about ace giving us his expanded backstory and relationship with whitebeard, highly recommend it

Pretty much everyone significant at the war (-a select few) were alot more powerful than luffy. It was pretty clear that luffy was very much a fish out of water in this.
I think the reason they didn't kill Ace immidiatelly was because their main target was Whitebeard and his crew. The marines used Ace as bait to lure Whitebeard, and then they used Ace as a hostage. If Whitebeard showed up and the marines killed Ace immediately, then Whitebeard would just sink the entire island to the bottom of the sea, but because Ace was there, Whitebeard had to control himself and make sure Ace lives.
in the question of how strong Garp really is, he at the time was equal to Gold Roger who we can compare to Whitebeard, so at present Garp should be roughly equal to Whitebeard in terms of strength. and power interactions have always been interesting, like how Enel from the skypia arc's lightning had no effect on the rubberman luffy. Magma and fire both are hot but magma just burns hotter
Blackbeard was the craziest Wild card in that War.
even knowing that Ace gets killed does nothing to ruin the context, Ace died to save Luffy when he was distracted and Akainu was out to kill him before Ace. but yeah, seeing this in the anime, watching Luffy breakdown completely, it's so tough seeing him like that.

The navy wants to demonstrate power and they set their execution time for the "public execution" to set another example after Gol. D Roger and eliminating his son. It would be a loss to the navy to just kill ace before the exact execution time and obviously whitebeard showed up way before that to prevent it..

He bypassed Mihawk cuz Luffy may be immune to blunt force attacks due to him being rubber but not cuts. Mihawk would slice and dice luffy easy with his sword.

Theres a lot that could be debated about why they didnt just kill Ace immediately in any old fashion. I personally would say that a large portion of the Marines truly see themselves as being a form of justice that protects citizens and that they are keeping the world safe and are the law. Thus in large part they want to do things by the book and prove that they arent just thugs, they are the ones in power and doing things for justice by a lawful code. Therefore they want his execution to be done properly BY the official executioners in right way with Marine Polearms piercing them. Up until things were getting a bit too spicy for them Sengoku felt like it wasnt a big deal to keep up that façade. The simple way of putting it is that the Marines were cocky and felt like they could win this war without any chance of Ace being free'd, so there was no reason for them to not put on a show as they usually do to prove their superiority.
Jimbe random warlord is important moving forward Benny. But if you do read back he actually has moments with Ace during impel down that draws jimbe to have a relationship with Luffy and causing this type of bond. Benny honestly can’t wait till you read a know more about him

They didn’t kill ace as soon as white beard showed up because they had a time they announced they’d do it if they just killed him when white beard shows up it would show that the navy is weaker or scared of the pirates when they’re trying to showcase how strong they are
Skypiea is my favourite arc.
I never tell people Skypiea is a turning point, even though I love it, because Skypiea is pure One Piece, it’s an adventure in a totally unbelievable fantastical place. But the enjoyment of Skypiea is directly linked to how into One Piece you are at its core. If you’re on the fence still at Skypiea, it’s not going to be the “holy shit” arc that alabasta or Enies Lobby are.
Skypiea is one of my top three arcs so far. I love that arc so freaking much.

I started reading One Piece way back when it was first being translated by Viz. I dropped it after the chopper arc because at the time Naruto was just so much better to me. The art and the chunin exams just hit differently.
Ever since then I’ve read the start of every One Piece arc for like 20 chapters then I drop it. Ow that I know One Piece is in its final arc I’ve decided to reread everything. I’m around chapter 700 and the manga is pretty good.
It’s got some arcs that I don’t really care about, but overall I enjoy it.
One of my favorite arcs is skypiea. Always weird to me how people sleep on it, but I also don’t really care about fishman island. Just wanted it to end, felt like it dragged.
They didn’t kill ace instantly cause 1: they used it as bait which whitebeard smelled and 2: the cameras were still on thanks to buggy lmao. I know a lot of ppl already mentioned the first part but I haven’t seen anybody talking about the cameras being the main reason. They didn’t want to seem like the bad guys to the rest of the workd

the way it works with Film Red, as far as I understand it, is that all the flashback stuff with Uta is canon but the present-day events of the movie are not.
One of the goals of the execution was to lure the Whitebeard pirates into a trap and kill them. If they just kill Ace then Whitebeard can just sink the entire island because he doesn’t need to care for Ace.
At marineford i was still just watching the anime and its crazy how different it seems( haven't gone back to read old chapters)
From now on the arcs will be getting longer and longer.. think about how will you make the videos longer or in parts. I was more moved by Whitebeard's death than ace's.. Everything or almost, has a reason in one piece, even broken doors that get fixed in the next panel.

Anyway, as for the reason why the marines didn't just kill Ace, the way I took it is that their goal wasn't just to kill him, but also demonstrate that they are still the most powerful force on the seas. If they really wanted to just kill Ace they could have skipped the public execution entirely and just kill him in Impel Down, but they WANTED WB to show up, and they wanted to show the world that they can also defeat the strongest pirate there is. After Enies Lobby their public image was getting lower for sure.
They cut the camera feed halfway through when they realized that WB was no going to go down easily and that it wasn't going to just go smoothly. They didn't want to show the world them struggling. The announcement that Ace would be executed early was also to try to bait WB into being more reckless. Executing Ace was just a red herring for the world, and the true goal was showing the world that they can defeat even WB.
Also, yes, Garp is a million times stronger than Luffy. If he wanted to stop Luffy, he 100% could have.

They told luffy and buggy "accidentally" about moving up the execution was a trap. Ace was the bait to make sure every single pirate there land closer to the land. Then they seal with the wall and let the pacifista finish them all off from behind..

Nah it's because they had the strategy to trap all the WB pirates in the bay and surround them and kill WB as well. If they kill Ace early WB would just tell the troops to retreat to spare lives.

10:00 They didn't kill Ace right there precisely because they were broadcasting the whole thing, what would the world say when the powerful World Government was forced to move up a scheduled execution of a prisoner just because they were in the process of losing that very prisoner to the other side? For what it's worth Sengoku did tried to stop the broadcast in order to kill Ace right then, but failed because Buggy was broadcasting his own promote nonstop, and when they were actually in danger of losing Ace Sakazuki did went in and take him out right there, so there you have it.
So regarding the movie canon. Starting with Strong World, usually the major antagonist is canon to some extent and appear very vaguely in the story. Shiki and Uta have appeared essentially in the background of the manga, chapter 0 (Which was made to promote the moving Strong World, aka the only movie written by Oda himself. [You have reached the point in One Piece where you can read it and watch the movie without spoilers]) is canon. I think Zed is canon. However the events of the movies are not canon. Basically none of them fit into the timeline correctly and the events of the movies are never referenced in the main story.
