Shirley Knight and Estelle Parsons give such intelligent talk about the art and WORK of acting.

Boy am I sorry that I watched this. What a let down to hear her speak with that silly English affectation. She's from Kansas, for crying out loud. Then, "the most violent country in the world" ??? What a dunce. Glad I never knew this while she was alive. Sorry, Rian, but I recently discovered you and I hate to stain your nice channel with a nasty comment, but you have to cringe a little here....not your fault.

Shirley LIVED in England for SEVERAL years. Therefor, it is NOT surprising at all that she would develop an English affectation in her voice. It is not a put on, as you seem to suggest. This woman was one of the most intelligent actors in the world, AND was excellent in her roles. Why you choose to hate on her is a mystery and totally unnecessary. She lived HER LIFE on HER TERMS...and for this she has my total respect.

@@captainnice9698 I'm not hating on her -- I am simply telling you that her accent was an affectation - it's a sign of a weak character and a shallow personality rooted in a childish need to be noticed - which is basically why most actors all seem to have the same personality type. Same goes for Madonna - same for Gillian Andersen - same for Maria Callas and others. It's a mental mess. Geez, if you watch Gillian Andersen now, much like Maria Callas in the 1970s, she speaks with whichever accent fits the venue. In the UK she is 100% British on a TV show there and 100% American here. You can do a UA-cam search for that yourself. It's truly demented. Same for all of these people - save for Madonna, Sammy Davis Jr and Johnny Depp who came back to the USA with a fake accent and were bluntly mocked and told to give it up already. I think Shirley Knight was a great actress, but she never knew when to stop acting. I went to school in Maidenhead, England for 4 years non-stop. I didn't come back to NYC sounding like Freddie Bartholomew, and neither did my brother. Just face the fact that these people are actors and by their very nature. they are always "acting" -- trust me on this one. I work with them.

Oh, and I left out the part about her politics -- another means by which to get noticed. Before my time, but Cass Elliott - someone I like a lot, but now a complete turn off because I saw an interview (from 1970) where she spoke about her political opinions -- what a complete and utter dunce! At the time, it was just left wing hippie stupidity, but now, after 50 years, you have living proof that she was not only wrong, she was a frigging idiot.

@@davemattia One other fact you may not know about Shirley Knight is that she was BIDIALECTAL (bidialectal - natively using or capable of using two dialects of language). Again, this is a recorded FACT (look it up on her wikipedia page, she had been that way since childhood). Ok, YOU didn't develop a British accent, fine. However, I personally knew a woman at a firm I use to work for, who was American born and came back to the USA WITH a noticeable British accent after spending a few years at the firm British office (and was she NOT petending). Shirley Knight passed away a few months ago, and in one of her last interviews (with actress illeana Douglas here on You Tube) comes across as genuine, real and true to herself AND her beliefs. This how I will remember her, beautiful and she WAS the "real deal"

@@davemattia Some people pick up accents and intonations really easily and not intentionally. I am one of them.

Good lord! That fake British accent is so goofy.
