  • In the aftermath of the 10th of October 2017 Durban Storm, I found another dead African Penguin at Christmas Bay beach in Ballito on the 11th. Three days prior on the 7th of October, it was African Penguin Awareness Day. Last year on the 20th of July 2016 I also found one on at Christmas Bay and I made another video on that. The African penguin is another one of Africa’s endangered species.
Apart from being endangered, the African penguin does not have a habitat in Kwazulu-Natal. They are practically lost when they arrive here and they are also in an area that doesn’t necessarily have the same fish sources that they normally use for their sustenance. They do feed on sardines and the best explanation so far for why they are found here is because they chase after the massive shoals of sardines Then eventually the sardines disappear and the penguins are left on their own to fend for themselves.
The North Coast Courier have reported on the 27th of August5 2017 about a juvenile penguin that was found at Tinley Manor Beach after a Fox-terrier started to bark at it. It was alive but showed signs of a previous shark bite and it had malaria as well. This penguin ended up at uShaka Marine world and was one of the two that was recently returned to Port Elizabeth on African Penguin Awareness Day. [1]
Then about a month ago, another juvenile penguin was found alive at Zinkwazi beach on the 11th of September 2017. This one was also alive and also had a small wound but was strong on recovery. I spoke to Me Ann Kunz at uShaka Marine world and she told me that this penguin is still under their care. [2]
Then close to the 27th of August 2017, a juvenile was found on the South Coast of KZN at Port Edward. Also alive and also subsequently cared for at uShaka Marine World. [3] This penguin was the second one that was taken back to Port Elizabeth on the 7th of October.
Mr Quentin Power is the unit commander at the Specialized Rescue Unit in Ballito that looks after the welfare of marine animals which includes whales and dolphins. It is a volunteer organization. He was the person that collected the dead penguin from my house after I recovered it from the beach. He told me that they have so far seen at least 6 penguins swimming in the waves and that more dead penguins were found. Some penguins actually get the hooks of fishermen in their mouth when they confused the bait for food. This is indeed a sad state of affair and a sign of how much humans are interfering in nature. The penguin that was taken from me will undergo an autopsy under the supervision of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. One of the goals is to establish what the new food sources are that these penguins live on in the unfamiliar waters.
