Doesn't get any better than this! James played and sang from the heart, lots of soul, dynamite solos, other musicians always all in the pocket, just a great band and great leader! Thank you James for leaving so many examples of how blues should be played.
SO SAD TO SEE YOU GO IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE WE LAUGHED THE BLUES AIN'T GONNA HURT YOU THAT'S ALL IN YOUR PAST I'VE KNOWN JAMES FOR 41 YEARS NOW IT'S FINALLY TIME TO REST CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042 USA
Isn't he, Man he's a great Blues singer, and the boys in the band, they in the groove as well, some very cool harp playing indeed. Play this song every time I need a little shot of Blues, it's just the ticket!
This was the path the Fab T-Birds were walking with Jimmie and Kim....it's a shame they seperated. Great style of blues you can listen to this all night long.
Yes indeed. James is a friend of mine and he's as good as anybody at this thing called The Blues. He tells his story (he's one of the very best songwriters and vocalists) then his harp tells the story. My ex-wife described his harp style as 'sultry' - James enjoyed that. Today he's not in great shape health-wise or career-wise but he's made his mark and already created a great legacy - and it ain't over yet! Keep on James! Best wishes to all the people out there who love this stuff like I do.
Harman is THE shit! I had the honor of backing him up on a couple of gigs back in August of '07, and let me tell you, hanging with Icepick is a LOT of fun!
The correct title of this song is "I've Got News For You" this is from a bootleg release on VHS then DVD, it was a TV show in Chicago and not suppose to be made into a product.. I never signed off on it. Somebody from the film crew held the tape, film whatever for 15 years then released it anyway without my permission. They have never discussed it with me or offered me a dime... digital technology is a mess. I'm glad you all like it and only wish I was getting paid for it.
+lipsnatcher101 I already answered this one, this song is on this bootleg only. I never released it for purchase. The film crew from this Chicago TV show held onto it for 15 years then released it as a video tape then a DVD... I suppose you could pay those bastards for a copy of the DVD, but I have nothing to do with it.
+james harman No, you said this is from a bootleg release, not that you never released a version I could purchase...which is why i asked...so i could buy it. Regardless, a great job was done here and e everyone that sees is will look for more of your material.
@@stephenmctaggart8400 Hello Stephen Mc Taggert. although I wrote the song back when I had Kid Ramos and Hollywood Fats playing guitar in my band this live recording is froma few years later when Robert Eason was my guitar player. Hewas but 18 or 19 years old at that time. He left me when he was 23 to return to school and become an accountant, moved to Seattle , Washington, married had three children and has recently moved back to San Diego. Whenever he drops into my shows, he always swears he has not been activly playing music, but you can't tell, because he still sounds just as great as he did when he was playing all the time in my band. He is one of those "old souls" in a younger body. Thank you for asking.
Yes, he is a great raconteur. I have had the pleasure of hanging out with him but not the undoubtedly great pleasure of backing him up. Well done Mojogypsy! Nobody tells a story like James. I wish I was with him now, sharing a bottle or two, an experience or two and listening to The Right Stuff, preferably on 78rpm through a top class hi-fi. He's great, I love his music and I love him!
I saw James at a club in Tempe AZ once. It was a packed on a Saturday nite. He changed his suit at the break (it was soaked with sweat) and just tore it up! The energy level was thru the roof! I only wish I knew which side men were with him that nite.
This a really good video with excellent atmosphere and mood, capturing a high point in James Harman's career. He had a great band and was performing superbly himself.
+cadilacslim Please remember my name is HarmAn, it's Dutch... there is no O in my name. The Belly Up doesn't book much blues anymore... I stopped ground touring to focus on fly-in blues festivals in 29 countries... I just played my only California date so far this year at The New Long Beach Blues Festival .
+james harman I live in South Africa and am a huge fan, We have a few good blues festivals here. The Durban Blues Festival is my local festival and features a few international artists. I am sure you would kill it here. Big respect!!!
+Adrian Nel Hello, thank you for the kind words; if you know who books this festival please send the info and I will pass it on to my booking people and who knows.... I might come play there. I hope to see you someday!
james harman The festival is on later this month and there is a artist from Chicago that is invited. I hope you could make it for next year maybe, that would be awesome. I will paste the festival directors details below. Hi woodsheddin I know that James loves it when girls dance - have you never heard his Don't Spoil My View? I'm a musician myself and when people dance I feel the energy surge. It's great! And thanks for the response wonton5000: i've never played through a Mesa Boogie but if that's what Robbie said..! I still miss my reissue Super Reverb I had to sell. Combined with my Vox AC30 (Kid Ramos uses that combination of amps) or Twin reissue, it was fantastic, especially witha Korg 'Leslie' pedal.
Those two blonde amps are James' harp amps, both with one 15" speaker, his preference. Robbie sounds great through any decent amp. I saw in Nelson, Lancashire, U.K., playing through a hired Mesa Boogie. It was the sweetest sound since my man Peter Green. I told James that and he replied: "Phew...that's a big compliment. Peter Green's...er...(chuckle)...Peter Green!"
+james harman - My pleasure - thanks for the years of brilliance and inspiration, not to mention TONE!!! Hoping you'll tour Oz one day and I can see you in the flesh. Cheers
+Phillossimophino I can not tell you why the people who book The Byron Bay Festival have not booked me again, since 1991. I still get a lot of positive mail from Australia, but no agent has approached me abut playing there again in all this time. Thank you for diggin' my work.
At the time that video was shot, the RI bassman was not around yet so it's probably an original one. Might be a Bandmaster as well, it's hard to tell. Maybe he's plugged into one of the two blonde Twins behind him but it sounds more like a tweed amp to me.
Hi bshuja5 With respect, it's not really in Kim Wilson's style...James was doing this stuff for ten years before Kim. It's the blues. He was born in Alabama, so he's a Southerner and this stuff is in his DNA! James is influenced by Junior Parker, Sonny Boy Williamson and many more of the great black performers, including soul singers like James Carr. But he is his own man, with his own ideas and songs, and has been for decades. And you're right, it is great stuff. Best wishes
interesting ... i was told that this was a lineup from the 80s but the bassman RI was first issued in '90. Not that it actually maters but then the video must be newer. It's f&§$ing good music, that's all that counts.
+Thomas Birck my bass player in this video was Joseph Leaon; he was in my band for several years. He is still around and plays with several different San Diego artists.
Thanks bshuja5. Again, with respect, I just wanted to clarify that this stuff can't be called 'Kim's style'. There are quite a few guys who were doing it before him. I'm a Kim fan, I first saw him back in 1979 and 1980. He was astounding and it's an unforgettable memory! However, I suggest that you check out James' CDs, also Rod Piazza, another GREAT harpist who was doing it before Kim. I presume you're familiar with the work of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson #2? Regards
One of the greatest harp players, singers, and blues interpreters that ever lived..see you in heaven James my brother
He was not an interpreter he was the real deal
Doesn't get any better than this! James played and sang from the heart, lots of soul, dynamite solos, other musicians always all in the pocket, just a great band and great leader! Thank you James for leaving so many examples of how blues should be played.
In Memoriam: : James Harman (June 8, 1946 - May 23, 2021)
R.I.P. maestro. one of my favourite harp player of all time!
Fantastic controlled harp playing...not too much, just brilliant little licks.
Almost vocal responses. Great stuff.
You can't have a blues song without a "Lord, have mercy!"
Harmans tone and phrasing is unbeatable. He KILLS.
This is so incredibly smooth!! WOW. What a voice...what a band and a great player!
SO SAD TO SEE YOU GO
IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE WE LAUGHED

One of the most artful harp players ever. Superb solos all the time. Thanks for posting.

Quel grand artiste, superbe voix et excellent harmoniciste, Repose en paix.
Of all James Harman songs this one is above any of them.
Beautiful harp playing. Solid gold tone.
This is sometime around 1995. I met James for the first time in Hawaii with this band. He's one of my heroes for sure.
Let's keep him in our thoughts as he goes through a very rough time.
Harman is THE shit! I had the honor of backing him up on a couple of gigs back in August of '07, and let me tell you, hanging with Icepick is a LOT of fun!
Now, even in Scotland, this sounds mighty fine!! Thanks for posting.

I have see James Harman 2 times in Belgium he is a great Blues Man ;)
Saw James when I was working door at Club Fred years ago in Fresno w/ Mofo Party Band...one of the best blues shows ever...

Raise HELL in Heaven Mr. James. Sad days down here...
This a really good video with excellent atmosphere and mood, capturing a high point in James Harman's career. He had a great band and was performing superbly himself.
Saw him in St. Louis at the Furst Rock, in May of 1990.
James Harman is the MAN!!
Harman remains the very best progenitor of blues of this age.
What an incredible voice & harp.
R.I.P, Bro .....

Oh my god! I was at work and we borrowed someone's truck and this was in it. this is actually sick! I love him!
