Navajo Puppy Song (Lyrics & Translation)

- Here are the lyrics to that song that we were taught in Pre-School or Kindergarten, in the Navajo language. You would know this song if you went to school on the Navajo Rez in the 70's or 80's. I don't know if this song is still being taught.
Hopefully, this will provide some warm or fond memories. I've provided lyrics to the song along with a literal translation into English of what the words are saying.
For those of you teachers or child-care workers who live & work off the reservation and want to teach your students a Native American song, this is one song you can teach your students without offending anyone. Enjoy!
This is a pic of my real dog Kii (pronounced like key as in key chain), which means "Boy" in Navajo. Some people when they sing this song substitute the name Kiizh, which is short for Łikizh or "Spotty." My pup can go by either name!
My grandmother, who was born in late the 1800s or early 1900s, she sang her Navajo Puppy Song with [stomach “dragging”] instead of [stomach “round”]. I think it may differ in other areas of the Navajo reservation. Thank you for posting this. Brought back beautiful memories of my childhood. 💖. When you lose your Diné grandparents and mom when your young, you feel like you’re no longer apart of what it means to be a Diné and for some reason you become an outsider but no one can take my language from me as well as the teaching and stories that my grandparents installed in me. My teachers were from the 1800s. They were Traditional Diné people. My grandmother refused to interact “others-foreigners”, didn’t wear shoes, look at mirrors or cameras, eat fish/seafood. Many blessings and stay safe. ✨
I learned it in Kindergarten as well and yes they do still teach it! My 5 year old daughter just learned in her Navajo culture and language class. I was so proud to here her. Such pride and enthusiasm to speak the language and learn about her heritage :)
lol that puppy is soo rez
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's the best kind. Lol
One Rez pubbie 😂
This song is still being taught. I am 24 years old as of March, and I learned it when I was about 8 years old. The person who taught me this song was Dollie L. Yazzie, a longtime educator. She was a really tough lady. She recorded herself singing this song on a vinyl ages and ages ago. She died a few years ago, but I will always remember this song.
If it is not taught in school then it should be taught at home.
There are so many things that should taught from native people

Even though I did not grow up at a Rez school, this song sounds very familiar. It must be the tune.
it is the same tune as a children's old English song, I think 6 Little Ducks.
Six little ducks went down to the shore,
wibble wobble, Wibble wobble,
to and fro,
But the one little duck with a
fearher in his back,
He ruled the others with a Quack quack quack.
Somerhing like that. till no little ducks came back. Then mother duck goes quack quack quack,
And all the little ducks come running back.
Yes, nursery rhymes , great tunes to reuse to your own words!
I was fun listening , Ho.
Beautiful song and cute dog!
Coincidently, in Vietnam we usually name dogs "Ki" too, which is pronounced exactly like "Kii"! It doesn't mean anything in Vietnamese though.
(I named all my dogs "Quýt", pronounced like "kwíít")
I'm from outside the rez in the east coast and trying o teach myself Navajo and this is a good place to start and heck it's catchy and I have my dog along awesome!!!!
10 years ago I was taught this song, and i loss it in time, and to listen to it again, just feels sad, it makes me remember of how my childhood was, and my family who changed from then to now.
I remember when I was younger my grandma sang this song and she still does and to our dogs.
i love this song. it always mad me cry though i dont know why but it does. :) it always makes me feel safe
I had the same reaction which is weird, especially so since this is the first time I've ever heard it
Yes you good teaching 2 Navajo people we are learning Navajo and I'm Navajo
very cute puppy on picture.
adorable voice and lyrics!
@hopichick13 Dialects Athabaskan-it's so funny when both Fluent speaking Navajo and Apache come together they sound like the other tribe is speaking broken of theirs.(like hearing someone speaking broken English) A lot of the word meanings have been switched around. And plurals have been switched around too. It's pretty funny.
My grandmas used to sing this to me and to all of the grandchildren.
Awh mii grandma used to sing mii thiis song ;)
I have a dog named rango and I sing this him every night
