Hey Everyone! I hope you are all having a great week.
Today I am talking about dog corneal ulcers that do not heal. Most dog corneal ulcers heal in about a week. The big problem is when the dog corneal ulcer or scratched eye does not heal. It can be really scary when the scratched eye does not heal even with eye drops.
When a dog's corneal ulcer does not heal a veterinarian will need to be seen to fix the problem. Sometimes you will need to see a veterinary eye doctor, but first talk to your veterinarian and see if that is needed.
A veterinarian will fix a none healing dog corneal ulcer with a grid keratotomy. I know that is a fancy word. It means the veterinarian will remove all the bad unhealed cornea on the dog's eye. The veterinarian will then use a tool or very small needle to make a grid on the eye or cornea. This will allow for the cornea to grow across the grid and heal. It is like the veterinarian is making train tracks on the dog's eye or cornea to help healing.
Once the eye has been prepped for healing with the grid keratotomy, the veterinarian will either place a contact lens on the dog's eye or a third eyelid flap will be used. By covering the eye with a contact lens or third eyelid flap the eye can heal.
Corneal ulcers that become indolent or none healing are common. There is usually an underlying cause that prevents the eye from healing normally. A corneal ulcer in a dog should heal in about a week. If a corneal ulcer is not healing or getting worse with treatment from a veterinarian, the dog should be seen again to make sure the ulcer has not become indolent and need additional care.
Remember that dog eyes change quickly. They get better fast and bad fast. If you every feel like your dog's eye is doing poorly, always see your veterinarian.

Thank you so much for your video and thorough explanation! Our beloved 11 year old boxer, Ali, has had this condition for 4 months. The continuous antibiotics and steroids only work up to a point. Then, it starts all over again. Our vet referred us to an eye specialist. Appt. In a few days. Now we know why it's not healing, and also what to expect for Ali's treatment. Thank you, to the moon and back!

Thank you Dr. Annin! Ali had a "Diamond Keratotomy" on his right eye yesterday. The eye specialist also removed 5 little growths on his lids from both eyes. Ali is a trooper and is doing well. Both eyes are swollen, to be expected. Hoping the procedures solve all issues. We are so grateful for your video, it definitely helped us make the right decision. Blessings to you Dr. Annin!

My dog had a corneal ulcer for 3 weeks, tried antibiotics, serum eye drops and everything the vet told us but nothing worked. He said he might lose his eye because he needed surgery. I did research online and tried a holistic approach. I gave my dog home made honey eye drops and I was praying it works. After 3 days his eye is completely healed! God gave us natural medicine! Not saying this would work for all but it worked for me - honey eye drops & prayer! Praise Jesus!

I found a site that said, "To use honey in treating corneal ulcer in dogs, boil a cup of water with three (3) teaspoons of this sweet substance. Stir gently until the mixture achieves a slightly thick consistency. Let the mixture cool down completely. You can now apply it to your dog’s affected eye as irrigation or as a natural eyewash." It also said that consuming astaxanthin, found in foods like salmon, improved eye healing. Lutein as well, found in eggs.

Dear Doctor, my dog has previously suffered from corneal ulcer. The Cornea was used to look like a Blue Tapioca Pearl and no glow in it. The sclera that used to be white in now covered in flaming redness. I used antibiotic which is cefalexin and got 2 to 3 eye drops successfully drop in it. However, in the third day of my ShihTzu's eye infection, my dog was fighting and biting and didn't want anymore eye drops but still takes the cefalexin or antibiotics medicine. In the first week of no healing, I used colloidal. Silver drops but not directly used in the eyes. I used wet towels and lukewarm water with salt and mixed it with colloidal silver. Then bought Healthy Silver with colloidal silver in it. My Shihtzu likes it. After 3 days of taking the Healthy Silver, the tapioca pearl was now just a dot. I saw healing. I saw glow in the cornea. The used to be blue and look like pearl is now glowing gold cornea with still dotted pearl. Yet my concern is the redness. Though not flaming but still there. My question is, would this redness go away soon? It seems forever and not healing. Pls advise. I do thank any time you donate to me. Grateful, Cathy.

hello. i have a reactive / aggressive pekingese who is also difficult to give eye drops or gel. you can wrap your shihtzu in a towel. if that doesn't work then you can hold the bottle near the eye then give a favorite treat... don't put the drop in the first few times. then when he doesn't expect it apply the drop... in other words just get the dog used to the sight of the bottle, then the bottle being close to his eye, then eventually work up to giving the drop. each step giving a treat. it may take a while bit it has worked for my pekingese. he still doesn't like it and i waste a lot of drops if he moves but this way he is focused on the treat and not so much the drops or gel. with gel or ointment maybe your shihtzu will allow you to place it in with your clean thumb. same idea... get the dog used to having your thumb near his eye as you give him a treat. then put a drop of gel or ointment on your thumb , treat and gently tap the gel / ointment to his eye. this has worked for my dog.

First diagnosed was dry eyes, they gave me anti-infective eye drop but it got worst within 3 days. 2nd diagnosed was eye ucler, they gave me antibiotics and anti-infective eye drops. I have a feeling the anti-infective is causing it to be worst? Since day 1 of using it, it doesnt seem to get better and on days I would forgot to give him the eye drop. He could open his eye wider, as soon as I gave the drop he would squint. My dog lost his right eye last month, I did asked the Vet to apply the contact len thing so that we wont lost his only eye. So I took my 3 year old dog in to the vet . My dog has like a white stain something like that. On both of his eyes . They don’t cover the whole eye . It’s just a mark on both eyes . Vet looked into his eyes and said their wasn’t a concern for vision loss . Said his eyes looked fine .. but he thinks my dog had ulcers and became scars. Something like that. I noticed those stains on my dogs eyes out of no where . I don’t recall him having anything in his eyes before I noticed those marks . They gave me eye drops to put every 6 hours and every 12 hours …….. I kinda wanna get a second opinion just cause I love my boy so much . He doesn’t seem to have vision loss or anything . He’s still the same old playful dog . But it bothers me that I see those marks in his eyes …. Vet told me they were scars. He wasn’t sure what caused it but is that possible? He thinks it was ulcers that just scarred up . He’s not a outside dog either . He’s a inside dog so I know nothing scratched him . Like an animal or anything . Although I have seen my dog in the past rub his eyes with his paws , possibly his nails scratched his eyes? But I’m not sure .Is there any way those “scars can go away”?
He’s never squinted or had any discharged from what I recall. He’s normal

Hi Juan, I hope your doggy is doing well. A number of things can cause white to develop in the cornea of the dog's eyes. Everything from lipid (fat) deposits, inflammation, or dysplasia of the basement membrane, ect. It is never wrong to get a second opinion.

I did watch the whole thing thanks!
But was just asking for some advice that didn’t have to come to surgery as it’s really expensive here in the uk for vet bills and I am not rich.
I just wanted to see what would be the best treatment before surgery? But you didn’t really answer my question? But never mind he had treatment but the ulcer didn’t go it just got worse he had that Diamond cutter thing on his eye didn’t Work made it 10 times worse so he’s had keratotomy procedure on Wednesday so hope it works or been told his eye will have to come out….

He is going to an ophthalmologist and has had his eye derided 3 times, had diamond bur and keratotomy. The surface looks good but the eye is still super cloudy? A couple just gave me a pedigreed English bull dog. Dog is two years old and they gave up on this beautiful animal because of this very issue.. I don’t have the money to take care of this except to just keep buying eye drops. Is there any place that I may be able to take this little ball of love to, to get this fixed properly? I cannot afford thousands of dollars.

Hey Fred, this procedure should not cost thousands of dollars. It literally is a couple or few hundred dollars where I work in Nebraska.

@@DanTheVeterinarian The procedure you talked about would cost over $500 in my area, and it would have to be done by a specialist. They charge $250 just for the initial consultation. If they have to sedate the dog it would be more also.

Hi my dog before had this incident when he close his eyes, he was give tobramycin + dexamethasone ointment(if you have difficulty putting eye drops), this is an antinflammatory + antibiotic, this would serve for 7days, then put artificial tears 3-4times a day. The best way to put eye drops on dogs search here in utube. Also, my doctor had recommend to me remend eye gel for the corneal ulcer, i will still try this my dog had recent operation. Another alternative is solcoseryl eye gel.

Hi my pug also had ulcer almost 2 weeks ago, vet said that his eyes has started melting and does not have a good chance to heel but he gave us 2 eye drops , one of them was antibiotics and we started cleaning his eye with NS once a day. After 3 days of doing this his eye started healing, with in 8 days his eyes is now completely healed with a small scar, vet was also shocked. So its never to late ,
