How to pick up a mooring buoy - SVN Sailing

How to take the buoy in a buoy field is the theme of this SVN Sailing lesson.
The episode guest is Simona Pasqua, a skipper of NSS Charter who has been sailing to the Aeolian Islands, where the video was shot, for more than twenty years.
The video was made in Filicudi, invited by the NSS Charter office in Portorosa (Sicily), starting point for the Aeolian Islands. The charter company has provided us with a Lagoon 42 and an Oceanis 41.1 on which this lesson takes place.
Simona Pasqua explained the techniques that professional skippers use to take the buoy in light wind and strong wind.
We shoot this video in Marina Cala dei Sardi, a wonderful marina in Nord est Sardinia, in Cugnana gulf.

This is a system that you use only in Italy? In other countries, the buoys are different.

The last move .... securing in a high wind. ...seems to me to make no sense to sit stern-first into a high wind...thebroadest aspect of the boat is to the wind, the waves and weather will have more opportunity to ride up the transom , boat will ride uncomfortably... a strange response to stop mooring at this phase. Surely better to take the secured line forward and then bring the buoy line up and through the fairlead... a much more sea worthy and comfortable ride

With a large catamaran, especially in strong winds, we certainly use this technique. From the bow, it is very difficult to take the buoy because the bow of the catamarans is particularly high. We let the buoy pass between the two hulls and retrieve it aft.
