Told myself 'no more games', as I'm saving up to buy a house...
But can a house actually be a home if you can't fill it with beautiful games as this one?! 🤔
Im literally in the same boat
A house without games is not a home
@@listentosilverfish i plan to have a room dedicated to gaming
Buy that many games so you can build your house out of boxes ;-)
100% what I ask myself every day!
This seems more like a actual board game that you can bring out on any given night. KDM is a huge commitment that only appeals to a niche part of the community.
I mean, all DND lovers isn't really a niche community. It's pretty fucking large.
@@BrooksSoljah so you think most KDM players are DnD players? KDM is my favourite game of all time but never played DnD. You may be right, I dunno, but it's not how it is in my play group.
@@Syko1985 not entirely, but the niche as it is labeled is super similar. Poots even made kd kind of dnd but without the need for a gm/dm
The KDM community is really niche. I don’t know how someone could contest that. This game is not even close to reach mass appeal even if it’s good. The price is too high and gameplay too complicated. It will never be a “Popular” games.
@@justicebolt5293 I do contest that. If you take away the figure building aspect, the board game itself is easily accessible and even one offs can be created easily. There is nothing difficult about getting into the game honestly. All it needs is premade figures (4) and monsters and it's golden. Gameplay itself is far from a niche thing.
I do agree price is high, insanely high. I got lucky and got a BF original for like 125 bucks I think for a $500 game. That I do agree with
According to some early reviews of the game, they mention that the bosses are too similar to each other since they all share basically the same stats, except one has different movement I think. Also, the devs have also stated that the game is more balanced with higher player counts, which affects me as I'm primarily a solo player. There is a Tabletop Simulator demo available however, so I'll give it a try and see if it's worth looking into. But I already have KDM, and with another KDM type game (Aeon Trespass: Odyssey) on the way, I'm not sure I need another game that looks to do kind of the same thing. Though I do like the 1930's style art.
I've only played against a few of the bosses, however, the ones that I have encountered each felt different. They have unique AI decks which control their movement and the type of attacks they perform.
I totally missed out aeons trespass campaign. But thanks to you I looked into it and did a late pledge. It looks good
I agree that this game is so much better for a game night than KDM could ever be. I also agree that the creators of this game are incredible people.
enjoyed your playthrough alot!
@@BillySpenc Thank you so much! I enjoyed it as well.
Of course. 40k isnt a game youd pull out for a family game night either. KDM is a hobby all in itself. Its really its own thing, just comes in a box that resembles a board game.
The KS preview shows miniatures, but I really hope they'd offer a cardboard standees option because I really like the look of those on the table!
Also it just makes more sense for 1920s cartoon characters to be flat!
I was absolutely all in on this when I discovered it a few months back... and then I played it on TTS.
Firstly, I think everyone that’s interested, and is able, should play this on TTS before backing. It’s a smart investment of time to see if it’s for you beyond the art.
So, for me, the gameplay fell incredibly flat. And it really surprised me. Aside from the art, I love tactical fighting games, so a mix of that and the style should have been a no brainer... but I felt the town phase was a drawn out activity just to simply get a few upgrades. The lore aspect felt completely tacked on and that alone was a huge disappointment. The tactical fighting phase quickly became a bore, where you relied too heavily on luck to interact with elements around the board, or spent more time wasting turns keeping out of the boss’ range or LOS, hoping they would act in a way that would benefit your next turn. In a couple of cases, the battle was a loss purely because of a situational stalemate.
I found setup for the tactical fight to be a little laborious, and the premise of doing it all 4 times over not enticing in practice. Arcadia Quest has very similar vibes, but there’s a lot more fun in taking on a plethora of enemies (and your opponents around the table) than just one boss than can practically one shot you or chase you around the stage like a bad Benny Hill sketch for half an hour.
There’s a lot of love in this, for sure, and I really really wanted to enjoy it. But I’m glad I gave this a shot on TTS before backing.
The phrase “just for a few upgrades” doesn’t exist in my mind. I’ll do whatever it takes to get upgrades :) Fighting and upgrading is all I want.
Skillful and tactical fighting*
If it’s random and luck based, I’m out :/
@@erichorner8336 I'm not disputing that upgrades are great... just that it seems a very lengthy method of providing the option for them. It's a whole section with multiple phases etc.
Well luck is the name of the game here. Attacks and scenery activations are completely driven by them.
@@erichorner8336 The fighting is similar to pen and paper, where you have to roll to hit.
As the initial comment said, I enjoyed it a bit... But especially towards the end, all we did was standing around the boss, waiting untill someone's turn is happening, rolling and hoping to hit.
Which tactical fight games do you recommend other than kdm?
@@PACEUK22 from what I already have, Gloomhaven and Arcadia Quest.
The former gives me more depth and the latter gives me the silliness.
I am still forever haunted by my desire to get KDM though.
I'm a huge fan of vintage animation, I absolutely love the art style in this game.
THE QUACKALOPE IS IN THE CAMPAIGN ARE YOU SERIOUS guys go check out their kickstarter right now and keep an eye out
I've watched and enjoyed all of Bra Mithra and Fen's playthroughs and I'm on the fence. I completely agree that TT looks like a KD:M lite boss battler and I love the re-theming and streamlined gameplay so I'll be checking out the KS. I desperately hope the price point is reasonable, especially with standees instead of minis.
The distinction of "Lifestyle" board game is great. And I think it really throws into light the different type of emotions games can solicit besides "Fun"
Tussle looks like a better game in every way, easier to physically play the game, understand the rules, tighter rules in general.
KDM is a worse game, but is better... art. It says more things and can illicit a wider variety of emotions than sitting down at game night to have fun.
That's good, we need differing types of experiences. Have and love KDM. Will be pledging for the TT KS. Hours per game I imagine TT will win in the end.
Great content Quack, you do good work.
I played a demo in TTS with the designers of this game in the Paddle discord. The moment I was told it was a cooperative game I was kind of skeptical (I don't usually like coop games) but when we started playing it didn't feel like the usual coop games. It was a great experience with the private objectives and the market mechanic, even though we played only one round I still liked it a lot.
I will love to back it but I live in Peru, and sadly the shipping costs are always as much as the game itself and I don't feel like spending that more. Amazing game though! And awesome video!
Aw man, I absolutely need to get this now.
The kingdom death minis are still fabulous(plug, if you want the minis put together I will do so cheaply), this price point is far more accessible
You just sold me on backing this game's kickstarter!
From my two board game groups, one liked Kingdom Death Monster, while the other didn't. I am pretty sure that this second group will enjoy the occasional Townsfolk Tussle though.
I must be honest, I went into my TTS play session with somewhat raised expectations and even then I was completely blown away by how beautiful everything in this game is. From the flavour text, to the graphic design, to the artwork and even down to the font choices. Everything about this game is just an overall incredible product and Im definitely going all in - which is incredibly rare for me to do these days! :D
This sounds like a fun game for sure. Have you guys played _Assault_ _on_ _Doomrock?_ That's another boss battle game, only with abstracted party adventuring and exploration instead of settlement development. It sounds a bit similar to _Townsfolk_ _Tussle_ in that they're both meant to be played and finished in a single session, vs. KDM's long campaign structure. If you have played all three games--that's admittedly a tall order, LOL--would you say that Tussle is closer to Doomrock or to KDM?
This is not a game for me. Not my type of game, nor do i care for the aesthetic. But my friend, your skills are getting better and better and better. Your videos are without a doubt becoming my favorite to watch. I don't care about this game, but i watched the entire video riveted by your excitement and appreciation for it. I wish you and this game the most success possible. Your star in this industry is rising and i'm along for the ride.
Bravo! I’m sold! Always wanted to play KDM due to the mechanics and being a boss battler but just wont ever have the time. This is game is PERFECT for me! Love the Art style, gameplay, and theme! Can’t wait for this! Did they already announce an ETA like 2021 or we’ll wait for that on Kickstarter?
It finally happened. You got a Quackalope card in a boardgame. Well done guys.
I’m so thrilled!
Love the ideas in this game, I'm a bit put off with the art style, however I'm hoping it might grow on me!
Quack, this game looks really nice!
Just for transparency, was this a sponsored video?
Nope - every sponsored video has the label in the bottom of the video when you start watching and a comment in the description.
@@Quackalope Thank you!
This theme definitely doesn't speak to me as much as KDM's XD
I'm glad you like it.
Lack of conversation with Adam? What are you talking about? 😮
*whistles suspiciously and sweeps something under the rug* 😗
You know he’s actually not wrong. You can fan boy/girl all you want but that’s a pretty accurate statement. My wife and i love KDM hell we own everything and we bought in to the all in stuff that hasn’t released yet. But we’re looking forward to seeing more of this game.
I think you missed it. Creepo definitely wasnt fanboying but sarcastically acknowledging that this is a pretty common complaint in the KDM community.
Not to defend Adam but its actually common for designers to be communicating tons when they start a game concept and then as their following grows it feels they wont respond as much, this is because sadly more people means more time and more ideas.
I'm definitely looking at for this game. Like you said, KDM is just too "special" to ever really be dethroned, but I'm always looking for new boss battlers doing new things. I've pretty much backed all so far. ATO for boss battling with 7th continent map traversal. Oathsworn for boss battling with a cyoa style story. TT can comfortably fit into the boss battler lite niche.
Found out about this game via the KDM reddit but this video solidified my decision to back it. Also at 80$, that's a steal for what seems to be an incredibly re-playable experience.
I’m thrilled I could show it off for you :)
Decided to get the blackest bundle 2020 of kdm so i guess kdm is now my life cuz no more time and $ for anything else haha. Dont mind it cuz kdm is such a masterpiece!
I think, if you consider the Vignette as a one shot some of your points grab that much. Townsfolk Tussle seems to be much fun and the bigest points for me would be the hidden agenda and the interactive envoirment. But if i look at Characterprogession, the feel of power growing out on your chars and the epic storys that your imagnbiation forms because of the lack of information isnt still reached by any other game. I think the next big thing near to that will be AEONS Trespass but it will share some of the same weagnesses that this games brings with it. Dont get me wrong i appreciated your video and keep going :)
Your comment on their KS page made my day^^ Seems you have gotten to know them in person quite well. Quack
Fun theme? Check. Immersive world-building? Yes, sirree. Settlement building? Not sure. Semi-coop? Nope. Gonna play this sucker solo and fully cooperative, iterating through characters that get defeated or I defeat in return. Minis? If ever a game would benefit from just standees, it's this cartoony game - the artwork is gorgeous and it deserves to proudly be presented in glorious 2D. And the strongest suit of this game? The environment-grabbing-character-parts-reusing-MacGuyvering of this game. LOVE IT!
One question though...why is the box so damn big!!!
Great video, quack! Out of curiosity, have the designers mentioned anything about future expansions and their accessibility? I own KDM and love it. I don’t love that I’d like to get more of the current expansions however it’s next to impossible. Townsfolk looks great and even with zero future expansions considered, I’m in. (Just helping with the KDM comparison) 🦆
I am sure more will come if they / when they - do well :)
I've never played KDM or any other Boss Battler (is KDM the only one that actually is available?). Tho I did back Oathsworn and plan to late PM Kradia (as well as Sankokushin and Primal: The Awakening once they launch). I was on the fence about this when I first heard of it a couple weeks ago, cuz I'm actually NOT a fan of the art style, tho I do appreciate it. But the past few days w/ all these previews have got me really hyped. Thanks for this p/review.
Thanks for checking it out :) gameplay next!
Been curious before watching this, now I can't wait for the KS. Well done, Jesse!
This is not a KDM killer because the settlement phase is actually my favourite phase. I enjoy the story of building up my civilization. But you got me intrigued on this game and I backed it.
I'll be watching this for sure. I love the concept of the genre. and the theme of this one.
My main concern so far, is that early feedback is saying it may not scale well to 2, and as someone who plays almost exclusively at 2, that can be a deal breaker. The designers did comment on BGG that they are looking at ways to scale it, so here's hoping!
Man Tuesday is going to be awesome. Townsfolk Tussle and Darkest Dungeon. Are we going to be getting gameplay for both 🤔...? Thanks for all the great content. You guys are awesoem.
I think I got it wrong and it’s next week - the 28th
@@Quackalope Oh well. Guess I'll just have darkest dungeon kickstarter to tide me over.
@@iseis360 Townsfolk Tussle launches October 20th :)
@@icefrigi Even better, thanks
Oh no! Just heard about this one. Hopefully it becomes available to those of us who missed the kickstarter. Reminds me of cup head.
I'm interested on this game mostly for this video and the review of certain boardgame dealer you might have heard that send me to your channel, OK back to topic, I always have been attracted to KDM but the theme is a no go at home, this one looks more un my alley so I'm exited to play it. Thanks for the video on it
This should be a great one!
Thanks for sharing.
Your excitement about the game is contagious. :-) The game now has my interest and I'll be watching the KS.
I've had to make sure that I only purchase games that truly excite me as my shelves fill up. This game truly excites me.
Gee, thanks... yet another game to back! You're going to be single handedly responsible for sending me to the poor house!
I've signed up to be notified when it kicks off.
I think this is going to be amazing! This isn’t a KD:M killer but a great friend for KD:M to talk too lol Also I have joined Canje Studios for a 2 player KD:M on TTS and we have 3 vids up and it’s been a blast and the most brutal experience I have had in my 100+ hours prior to the live streaming 🤣😭 Love KD:M! Excited to see more content on Towns Folk Tussle and KD:M 🙌 Keep up the great work!
@quackalope Jesse is great that you like TT. Tbh this puts this game in the map for me, however I am a bit concerned as this effectively sounds a lot like KDM but increasing in the not great portions of the game. I agree this can be a good take out , play and put back in the box experience, but it seems like they focused on having 3 lv1 fights and a lv2 fight... I will definetely try and make my own opinion of it and look forward to your playthrough video, as always you provide with the highest quality content.
Kdm is style king to me
Have been following this with interest, and very happy about point 1 - accessibility. However I'm looking for some clear guidance about the play time. In your video you show the box which claims "40 mins per player", then say its about an hour per player, then you say you can finish a game in "2 to 3 hours".
Are you playing only with 2 or 3 players then? Does that mean if I want to play this within a single evening's games night (usually about 3 hours) I won't ever be able to play a 4P game?
I'm 100% in for this.
whoa great news! i was thinking of backing on how it looked alone. thanks for the encouraging intro!!!
and it'll probably deliver before gambler's chest, too
Haha most likely!
Well crumbs. I had talked myself out of this, but you talked me back into it. Think the replayability will be there?
@Lucid alright, cool. Thanks for the descriptive answer.
Damn, just found this video. Thanks Jesse. Hoping that Panic has extra copies later this year to sell direct
So this is a boardgame version if CUPHEAD video game?
In some ways!
Thank you for doing a preview that states the launch date clearly at the beginning of the review.
Haha I think I got it off by a week! XD
The artists did a fine job, but I'm still partial to KDM's Berserk vibes than this game's 30's animation revival aesthetic. I'm sure the gameplay is solid too; I'd give it a try. And Jesse: If you lived near me you'd have at least a 3 player game of KDM every day lol.
If I want to get a boss battler, and I dont want this one 'coz I dont like the theme (I prefer a classic fantasy theme) which options do I have excpet for KDM?
A playthough with Sean would be great!
XD doing it!
Thanks for the shoutout!
SON OF A....looks like I'm backing another kickstarter. Thanks Jesse
So this is "My Little Scythe" (with a better an somewhat more mature theme) to Scythe/Kingdom Death Monster? I'm probably going to back it but just trying to distill this well done video into its essence. Would this be accurate?
I haven't played it, but that doesn't seem all too accurate to me. My little scythe is explicitly a kids/family-friendly version of a game that isn't all too family-unfriendly in the first place.
I see little indication that Townsfolk Tussle would be a kids game.
@@thijsschipper6406 Makes sense. I wasn't looking at the family friendly aspect. I was more looking at the cost/duration/complexity aspect of the 2 pairs of games, but since I didn't mention that your comment is understood and appreciated :)
This looks absolutely bonkers. I cant WAIT for this game now. Thank you for shedding light on it!
Oh...oh this looks good. At first I was not interested, but now I am very excited.
The size and aesthetic of KDM turns me off, but I really like its concept. I’m glad there’s a more accessible and smaller version of it coming out!
To be honest there have been a few boss battler games out. Wild Assent (late from kickstarter? who would have thunk it :)) and the boss fights from Dark Souls is also a good boss battler, and my opinion is contrary to most but I like the game as is. If you like a shorter less grindy game there are some very solid rules on BGG. Last one I will mention is Aeon Trespass (Think Greek mythology with controllable titans to fight the epic monsters you will encounter) but alas this one is also , well not late yet, on Kick starter but Im sure it will be late.
Having given you those examples I hope you look into I will probably get this one as well as I really like boss battlers :) I am also going to try this one
This game is giving me huge cup head vibes and I LOVE IT!
SAME!
Wow , I am actually devastated that I missed the KS....
That's one beautiful prototype...
The cartoony art is so lovely... just want to play it. And with the mini's it will be a big one on KS
Love the old school cartoonee artwork..
is 1 to 5 or 2 to 5 players? Is cooperative with a Monsters's AI or Arena style ?
Some people buy KDM not just for the game play but for the miniatures as well so I don’t think this game will appeal to that part of the fandom.
KDM is my favorite game... the title of this made my mouth drop open. I’m officially intrigued! (Obviously haven’t watched this yet)
Better than KDM! How dare you. But, seriously though this one looks great. Thanks for the review.
Kingdom Death Muenster: the game where you build a camp and tribe to go out and hunt down wild cheese! 😉😁
Do you know if there will be a retailer level ... I think the community at my FLGS would love this.
Really not sure - it was new pub and it all depends on a lot of factorsz
Kdm is my game, but i 100% agree with all your points 👍
:) glad you enjoyed it!
Does it offer a good level of challenge? Do the battles feel close and require well thought out tactical decisions to overcome? Games like this need that to hold my attention... i get bored real quick if its all too easy.
Check out Bra Mithra and Fen's playthroughs to get a sense of the battles. They definitely don't look 'easy' but I'm a little concerned with some of the combat mechanics.
@@chrisel4802 which mechanics concern you?
@@anab0lic I'm not sure how I feel about the Townsfolk having to rely on a luck roll vs the Ruffians who always hit. There was also a moment in one battle that left two Townsfolk trapped and unable to do anything. It looks an excellent implementation of KD:M and I'm sure the creators are constantly refining rules and gameplay.
@@chrisel4802 that happened in one of my plays also. We entered a situation that was a stalemate and had to just quit. Wasn’t a great experience.
Boss battlers don't interest me much, but the artwork and silliness of this game has me very interested.
Sounds like a good time, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I can not wait to paint those MINIS!!!
Kingdom death is kinda like Warhammer 40k in that, if you love the lore, the style, the minis, etc. then nothing else can do it quite the same. 40k even moreso with the novels but yea
So maybe as a game it's tighter, more balanced, cleaner, etc but it's just not the experience that is kdm
Love the content, love the passion, I'm sold. Thanks for showing. Can't wait to try it.
The worst thing about KDM that really puts me off the miniature assembly itself - the game IS NOT BAD nor its great, board games have their age, unlike video games - IMO they will always stay vastly flawed pieces of entertainment let alone the amount of money you have to sink in with them you never get your money worth (its only a personal opinion not fact)
Not sure if it’s possible, but if anyone in Texas can help me piggy back on this game. Please let me know!
Are there any similar games with a town building mechanic like kingdom death and aftermath?
Not many and not on that scale - there are some coming out soon.
@@Quackalope Oh, which ones? KDM looks awesome, but it's too expensive to get it here.
I dunno if it really matters but your hashtag is missing a 'k'. It's just TownsfolTussle
How hard is it to remember the rules? Is this going to be easy to learn?
I will be backing this one for sure!
Do it!
I would love to see models insted of cardboard. Im a big fan of kdm. I would agree what you said this it easier to get going.
The KS preview shows miniatures!
the art ist so beautiful... but i missed the kickstarter :(
Interesting, although the reference to Cuphead (being a boss battler as well) is too on the nose.
So excited for this! Love pretty much everything about it at this point!
Townsfolk Tussel aka Cuphead the board game.
I can understand better how many people might have loved the rules and mechanics, but just couldn't get into KDM because of the genre and art. because teapot head 1920s cartoon art, was and still is, some of the worst 'for me', This game has negative appeal to me, even though I can sense the mechanics underneath are exactly the kind of game I'd normally love.
Haha see it’s so so so right for me :P
Will this have a mini's option?
Reminds me of Cuphead, amazing art style!
This game does seem interesting, but I am wondering if I just think so because of the illustrations. I think minis would actually make me significantly less interested in it. I am intrigued, but I never back kickstarters. I wait a few years and see how the game holds up, then pick it up retail or secondary market if I still want it. That being said I am curious, this is definitely not the type of game I play, and that says something.
I hope they do well enough to make more and more :)
The art is amazing! 😆😆😆
Right?!?!
Looks like they combined KDM and Gloomhaven with the secret goals. I was hoping someone would do this but the style and art really turns me off. Hopefully this game will get a retheming one day. Maybe CMON will take some notes here and put out their own version with assembled minis.
Please play this game on TTS first before you buy it. Our experience was as mentioned before in the comments, quite flat. Really disappointed by this one.
Love the Cuphead style.
It's not that hard to be better than KDM.
I’ve never played a boss battler wold this be a good place to start?
I would say so, it seems to be accessible while still maintaining what makes the genre fun
Okie
Sign me up.
How do people find out about these games ahead of time?
Cuphead: the board game?
Think this would play ok Solo? I had told myself I was not interested at this at all... but now... DARN IT maybe.....
