Splatoon 3 - BIG Big Run

  • With the final season of Splatoon 3 comes, appropriately, an escalation of threats by the Salmonids with this season’s Big Run-this time, they’re invading on all six locations they previously invaded, and instead of fighting a King Salmonid, you’re fighting all three of them at once, known as the Triumvirate. (I should’ve known that there would be only three King Salmonids, with the motif of the number “3” throughout this game.) It is, however, still the normal length of a Big Run, spanning the weekend of June 7th to June 9th, 2024.
For the record, those stages where the Salmonids invaded, in chronological order, are Wahoo World, Inkblot Art Academy, Undertow Spillway, Barnacle & Dime, Um’ami Ruins, and Eeltail Alley. This time around, I decided I’ll show six matches, one for each stage, though not in that order. (I think this also marks the first time in the Splatoon series where more than three stages are available at the same time for the same mode.)
I’ll also show something I hadn’t seen before: posters for the BIG Big Run everywhere. In Splatsville and Inkopolis Plaza, they form something of a line pointing to Grizzco, while in Inkopolis Square, they’re kind of just scattered on the floor, though there is still a higher concentration of them near Grizzco. In all three hubs, the Grizzco building is plastered with BIG Big Run posters, as a way of showing how desperate they are to recruit anyone willing to try.
And it seems that Grizzco was a bit too successful in that. Probably because this is an escalation of threats, BIG Big Run seemed to draw in people who are, frankly, not too great at Salmon Run. They want to experience what may be the last Big Run, and definitely a climactic one. I suppose this is a sign of things to come for Splatoon 3’s Final Fest.
The BIG Big Run introduces one last Grizzco weapon: the Grizzco Roller. This is one I’ve wanted to see before Splatoon 3 even came out, just to see what they’d do with the concept. The Grizzco Roller is a modified Dynamo Roller whose key characteristic is its extremely fast running speed, thanks to an internal combustion engine fitted onto it. Because it’s based on the Dynamo Roller, it’s also a very high damage weapon, able to run over Cohocks without slowing down. It’s also surprisingly ink-efficient. However, vertical flicks are extremely slow, though they deal enough damage to KO Drizzlers and Big Shots in one hit. I find the Grizzco Roller unparalleled at fighting the minor Salmonids, but it struggles against certain Boss Salmonids, like Steelheads and Fish Sticks. The Grizzco Roller is also excellent at picking up Golden Eggs and putting them in the basket; the speed makes retrieval fast and safe.
Every Grizzco weapon has yellow canisters on it somewhere. The Grizzco Roller’s canisters appear to be the engine’s pistons.

Even with everyone getting Grizzco weapons and specials recharged, 3 giant bosses is a lot to chew through in 100 seconds...

It definitely is. I heard about people pulling it off, but I never did so myself. I wonder if people were panicking.

The key is using Joe to hurt the other kings. If ya can lure him under Boros bomb, it'll do immense damage

They're not immune to each other's attacks?

Nope. It's really the only way this is even possible. Though the damage mostly comes from Joe

@Overhazard you can actually see what I'm talking about around 19:28

-Were there posters scattered all over the place in the other Big Runs? If not, I think this is the first time we've seen them all over the place.
-Match 1 - Eeltail Alley as a Big Run stage is fine IMO since you can't fall into the water. Also, hearing the players zoom around the stage with the Grizzco Roller is hilarious.
-Match 3 - Wahoo World. I don't like this stage in a Big Run, but your team did fine. But the Triumviruate, though! Man, facing three King Salmonids at the same time looks incredibly tough!
-Match 5 - Is it even possible to beat the Triumvirate in high tide? Trying to beat a single King Salmonid on high tide is pretty hard. But trying to beat all of them at the same time in high tide feels nearly impossible.
ZackScottGames has a video of his team beating the Triumvirate. His team consisted of himself, a friend who is an expert Splatoon player who uses various Charger weapons a lot, and two random players who were also very good at what they were doing. In the video, his teammates lured Megalodontia (AKA Joe) near the Cohozuna and the Horrorboros whenever it attacked so that it would hurt the other two Boss Salmonids. I'm unsure how many tries it took his team to defeat the Triumvirate, but it looked super hard trying to do so. You need to have all four teammates work together and defeat the King Salmonids while defeating the Boss Salmonids and lesser Salmonids at the same time, which is WAY easier said than done.

Figured that you need everyone to be on the same page and know what they’re doing to defeat the Triumvirate. I struggled enough dealing with people who, as shown in this video, easily panic, prioritize the wrong things (such as not fighting the minor Salmonids at all), or not collect Golden Eggs until as a last resort.

Looks like Grizzco was taking notes from the Full Stream Ahead Challenge when creating the Grizzco Roller. As fun as it was to zip around like a (squid) kid during a sugar rush, it was easy to get carried away and roll into the water or into Salmonids the Roller couldn't deal with.
With the exception of Big Runs, I don't play through Salmon Run too much anymore, since I keep running into people who aren't good at it, but I played through the BIG Big Run until I got at least the silver reward and defeated the Triumvirate.

I got demoted down to Profreshional +2, but I was able to climb back up later. There was greater incompetence in the BIG Big Run than there was in normal Salmon Run for me.
I think a big part of why people don’t do well in Salmon Run is because they either have the wrong plan going in, or they have no plan at all. There’s also how the fact that it’s now always going on means people don’t check the schedule before jumping in, whereas in Splatoon 2, they had to check the schedule and see which weapons were available. Now, you get a lot of players who find themselves with weapons they don’t know how to use and drag down their teams.

Yeah, the Big Big Run was...interesting, but I still have a lot of qualms with the mode overall. People definitely panic or don't think in the mode, like fighting stuff at the coast when they could try luring it to the basket as an example. But ultimately, there's the fact that it just feels like a bit too much sometimes. Fighting all three bosses on small stages at high tide was torture, and even knowing you can lure Meg to hurt the others it just really felt like there wasn't enough space and too much was happening. I was kind of hoping they'd just have one big health bar rather than all three getting one. In the end I only ever really saw one or MAYBE two of the kings defeated, but never all three. Meg is just too tanky.

As you can see in this video, I kept on getting cornered by the King Salmonids, and any time I spent not getting cornered, I was looking for my teammates, especially when they're splatted and needed to be rescued.
I hope the Triumvirate returns in the future though; I found out after this event that you get a badge for defeating all three of them, and I really like how it looks. From what people tell me though, it needs absolute coordination among everyone involved. Maybe they'll nerf the Triumvirate if it returns.
