  • In this Steve's Garage video I share a simple way to heat and insulate a cabinet in your garage. I'll be working with a Kobalt cabinet that I previously assembled in another video, but this method would work for any garage cabinet.
Many garages are unheated. Once temperatures drop the products you keep in your garage can freeze. Rather than try to heat the whole garage, just heat a cabinet instead. In my case I'm trying to heat a cabinet with car detailing products, but this would work for things like paint or woodworking products as well.
By using a simple dehumidifier rod, in my case the Goldenrod Dryer from Lockdown, and some board insulation from Lowes, you can easily keep a cabinet above freezing. Ensuring whatever products you're storing in your cold garage don't end up in the trash.
Below is an Amazon affiliate link for the products mentioned in the video. It won't cost you any extra, and I'll earn a small commission from your purchase!

An old fridge is an insulated cabinet by itself.

Not a bad idea if you have an old one or find one on the side of the road!

This is a super useful video for any of us that get to "enjoy" our super cold winters every year. I'm going to look into these products for my cabinet. My current process is "forget I left liquids and paint in the cabinet". Find them frozen after the winter or when I remember I have them in there and need them. lol!😅

Nothing worse than finding separated paint or liquid in the spring and then having to buy it again. There are a bunch of ways to heat a cabinet, but my main reason for doing it this way was simplicity. Just plug it in and it heats it just enough. It's also small enough to be able to get things out, or just move it out of the way in the summer.

From the Great White North, this is a very interesting idea. I typically bring in my freezable stuff in during the winter from my detatched garage and I have never heard of this. Also great idea to insulate the cabinet itself to heat only what you need heated to keep costs down.

I used to do the same, I just got tired of it. I don't see why this wouldn't work in a detached garage. As long as you're trying to heat a small space, some insulation and a small 'heater' should do the job!
