This was likely the BEST singles match in pickleball I've witnessed. BOTH players were emotionally taken to the very edge(!) If Lea Jansen curbed her frustrations -just an iota more, and realized that her game was ON, she might have been victorious. But...Anna Leigh also was more frustrated than usual as well. Despite their actual and/or imagined mistakes, they played their hearts out: BOTH should be proud. SUPERB game!
This literally was one of the best singles matches I’ve ever seen also and certainly the best women’s singles match. Some of the women’s pickle ball has become a little bit more like tennis, so it was great to see some aggressiveness coming to the net.
@@jamesconnelly2544 agreed! Paddle technology and new strategies have made it quite interesting. The best match I ever saw...men or women's...doubles or singles.....Lea's backhand stab volleys...it hurt my back just to watch her do them! They always say that in tennis, the most exciting matches are baseliners vs net rushers. You don't see those kinds of matches much anymore, because the technology has made net rushing more difficult than in the McEnroe, Becker, Navirtilova, Sampras eras. But this match had it all......
This is the best Leigh Jansen has played. She has narrowed the gap considerably. She missed several match points. I believe she is on the upswing and will beat ALW soon.
@@springfield03sniper I am not saying Jansen will surpass the ALW streak of wins, I am saying that Jansen will win against her. Maybe even with regularity. I agree that younger players are coming in and existing players are all raising their games. $$$ breeds competitiveness.
Great match by both, but experience won today. Lea was playing better most of the match but allowed Anna to shift the momentum by the timed breaks and failed to do the same. She played a few points towards the second set rushed and didn't allow herself to reset. If she keeps improving could see her beat Anna consistently.
I have had and been through and still go through the -1 thing Leah lost this match by.when you increase your paddle power.which Leah was fresh to have done, you also get those wide open easy winners after winning the point if you just keep the ball either more inbounds and farther from the line,or be more aggressive as far as you speed and power of her return exept aim for a 1.5 foot area inside the out line.because those power paddles have a tiny sweet spot, they are unforgiving and somewhat inconsistent sweet spot.i have her paddle and it gets more more than I wish it would.when you hit the dead center sweat spot ,while momentum is moving the same direction, you get those balls that have lots of energy, and they flare or slice just a bit out.but a faster paced ball aimed 3 feet right of the ones that flare out land is the best play, and difficult to do ,if she plays with that paddle a week even 2 weeks longer, she would have that mitigated and reduced in occurrence. ..and if playing this caliber will win.problem is Anna Leewalked up to the ledge and saw the dragons teeth.and knows that she has to make some changes,or next time she will lose.she will study the problem, identify, andndndndnd immensely work on her unforced errors,mistakes.consistancy. ....and scary thing to me is ,she sees what new ,better, paddle tech can do for other people games.look what percent of did to her.beat her.now sees Leah show obvious Improvement. I suspect Anna will be making some changes similar to other girls.and that's scary.
Can someone explain the paddle moves from Lea before every serve and return? Was curious as to if it was just a routine, like any other quirky thing, or if it was a focus move to remind her of some movement she was trying to replicate in her stroke while playing. If anyone knows or has an idea.......
There's an interview on the Pickleball Studio podcast with her where she explains its supposed to help her focus by touching those spots, and if it works, it works.
@@dixiecupboi I think she has discussed having some focus issues, and one of her coaches recommended this routine for her to help with focus before each serve.
They seem to retake a let serve, but as far as i know the let rule was removed and if a serve hits the tape but lands legally, play continues and you DO NOT retake the serve. Is it a tourney-specific rule? a pro-only rule? Am i just a dummy behind the times? Any clarification is greatly appreciated!
Game 1 when Lea got frustrated after the point near the end of the game... I dont think it was the ooing and ahhing that she was upset about. I heard someone in the croud yell "out!". I think they were referring to a ball a couple of contacts prior where it was really close to the sideline. I think a fan was frustrated that wasnt called out, and then expressed that verbally, which is not a word that a pickleball player wants to be hearing in the middle of a point. Shes a doubles player too and teammates calling "out" to stop their teammate from hitting a ball is a normal thing. So if you hear that word suddenly in the middle of a point, it could trigger a reflex reaction that oulls you out of the play just long enough to lose focus.
I guess we’re not there yet with PickleBall as players have to climb over barriers to retrieve balls. Too much to ask to just have someone lob a ball in for the players?
ALW needs to focus on playing the current point only, and stop focusing on what happened on the previous points. And the score will take care of itself.
Carvana PPA (Pro Tour) has some rule differences. Service lets that hit the net and land in, are re-served. In USAP play, a ball that hits the net and lands in is live. There is no re-serve.
Typically it is referring to a "roll volley" which is a topspin push shot usually done while standing at the kitchen line. ua-cam.com/video/vVv1PPuKUy0/v-deo.html
What a lame excuse by Leah waters mom my daughters, losing because the opponent has a new paddle twice to pop and three times the spin I don’t think so. If it has those attributes it would be banned.
meh I don't think she meant it that way but I can see how it sounded like that. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you on her mom's comment. but for sure thermoformed paddles have more pop and spin that's just a fact.
It wasn’t an excuse. It was her explaining that she’s playing differently than what she was used to her playing. She a different player. It wasn’t an excuse.
I wish the announcers wouldn't talk so much. Every game they redundantly comment about everything that happens whether its important or not, in such a monotone way. Please stop talking so much and just let us watch...
I agree. I looked at it again. To me it was too close to call and when it's that close, the ref should just leave it alone - especially in a championship match. I think Lea lost a lot of momentum after that call.
Watching this match is like watching tennis from the 1920s…if the big money does get to Pickleball, the step up in talent will make current players look like the early adopters that they are…
Of course, the level will improve over time. But if people think someone from the WTA Tour could just step in and dominate, note that in the most recent PPA Tour event, Eugenie Bouchard lost in the first round 11-9, 11-5 to Elina Geut. Geut then lost 11-3, 11-1 to Ava Ignatowich. Ignatowich then lost to Anna Leigh Waters 11-0, 11-2. That's how far Bouchard is from the top of women's pickleball.

topspin, which makes the ball curve over the net and drop lower so that it's more difficult to return.
