How to Fitting Loco Train Wheels with Motor
Fitting locomotive wheels with a motor involves several steps, especially if you’re upgrading an older model. Let’s break it down:
Wheel Replacement:
Identify the locomotive wheels you want to replace. In your case, it’s the tender wheels.
Choose suitable replacement wheels. Romford wheels are a good option; they come in various sizes and are designed for easy removal and refitting.
Remove the existing wheels by gently punching out the axles. You might need a needle drift for this.
Fit the new wheels onto the pinpoint bearings. Make sure they match the axle diameter and are securely attached.
Live Axles and Spring Pickups:
To improve pickup, consider using “live axles.” These allow electrical continuity between the wheels and pickups.
Install DCC Concept spring pickups on the tender wheels. Ensure the insulated wheels are on the side with the wipers.
If you’re using set track, consider having the middle drivers without flanges to negotiate tight curves.
Loco Driving Wheels:
Replacing the loco driving wheels is similar. Romford wheels with nuts are a good choice.
Remove the coupling rods.
Punch off the outer drivers from the side with insulating bushes. The center axle with gear requires more force.
Motor Wiring:
Connect one of the motor wires to the wire from the wheel pickups on the front (non-driven) truck.
Connect the other motor wire to the other frame wire.
Test the loco on the track; it should run smoothly.
