I've just found this video and it sounds like great advice. Got a 14 month old Labrador who is a dream on long walks off the lead over the fields and trails. Good as gold with his recall and he won't go out of my sight. But he's an absolute menace on a lead on the school run with my wife in the morning or on the short walk to the park!

Number one for a Lab is to run the energy out of them. Give them a tug session indoors to work off some energy before you open the door. My Lab has so much pent up energy sleeping all day that's the only way I can get her to pay attention once we go out. A prong collar also works well for extreme pullers but only keep it on for the walk duration.

I really wonder how people manage this. My Labrador is never tired. We do problem sloving games, scent games, tug, fetch, agility, training sessions to refresh, and just plain running because she loves to use the tremil. As soon as we get on a leash, if she meets someone new or someone she hasn't seen anyone in a while it's like she was locked up all day. Hell even when it's just me and her she still will always try to get me to play...no amount of exercise is enough ever

I have a lab/husky mix and this makes so much sense, he tugs on both me and my mom to a point where he’s pulled muscles in both of our backs!! I’m hoping to purchase a slip lead soon to train him so we can have an enjoyable walk together.

I'm a wheelchair-bound, my Labrador 5 months, she is pulling me and I love its traits... I learn her to turn left, right, stop at pedestrian crossings... She behaves better after runs off, long walk. Everyday we go for "hunting" ducks...

So glad I came upon your page by chance tonight. First ever black lab owner and many time dog owner. Felt like I was being a bad dog dad to my lab. But thank you for giving me the information on how better train him without the use of a shock collar. With what you said 3 ways to train and ill spend the time to do it and build on our relationship. Although I know he's just pulling because he's excited to swim in the lake by our house. He's an awesome swimmer, not an awesome walker. But thank you again can't wait to try your tips with him

I am a waterfowl hunter. Training collars are a must. A must for the safety of the dog. My point of saying this is that the collar actually becomes a positive. My dogs see that collar and instantly know we are going out to the swamp. They do the lab zoomies and drool.
The safety is that there are times you must have immediate recall of that animal. Danger in the field can come very unexpectedly.

What do you redirect a Labrador to chew on? Do you ever use a ball tug with a Lab given their soft mouth or only a ball for them to retrieve.

We have a 9 month old Labrador and he's generally great at heel walking. BUT! Only when we are talking to him or rewarding with treats. How long is it before we can just use instruction and not just food rewards? I.e. At what age does this get engrained in puppies and we can stop with food rewards? Thanks!

@@samwooltortonwooltorton8166 He's now 2 and walks really lovely, though still excitable at new places! I think a lot of it is just age and maturity but keeping consistent with you commands and directions. We found that he had to get past the adolescence mostly, so treating continued. But now he really listens to our commands and a lot less puppy brained! We still reward with treats when he's doing something really good or we need to distract him from something we don't want him to do/see.

My ribs and arm hurts me so much because of my 10months lab. He is ok while walking until sees grass or a tree to pee or poop. He starts pulling suddenly and unexpected. Also when sees other dogs. I have tried everything but event treats do not do the trick from sudden pull.

Damn I’ve been doing this for weeks and even thought he briefly heels when I say to, he pulls no matter what whenever he has any excitement. He’s only 11 month old lab but still really frustrating but I know it must be something I’m doing.
Norm (my dog) also jumps up on every person so I can’t take him anywhere public without restraining him and I’ve tried the loose lead sessions you’ve shown where you pull him down when he jumps up but that hasn’t worked either so I heard it’s just best to not let anyone pet him until he one day calms down.
    Any advice? Thanks so much

I just can't deal with this. It's a dog. You are a human. Make it do what you say.
If the dog (any breed) pulls you then stop and make it stop. If needed, turn round and drag the dog in the other direction.
    YOU ARE IN CHARGE!!
Labs are easy to deal with because they learn very quickly and don't get too excited.
YOU are above the dog in the pack so it must do what you say or there are consequences. Be the pack leader and you are in charge.
Speak to dogs in dog language. They are not humans.
