Life does have a habit of hitting you every so often...deep sympathy for Martha...Poor you, my husband and myself did this about 12 years ago, involved car accidents, filling up the car with wrong fuel, etc.,etc., you have to have your wits about you.

Go online to the DVLA and say you lost your licence and they will send a new one to the registered address and it will be with you before the 15days it takes to get processed. When, if, your licence arrives back from Bucharest you can let DVLA you found it and destroy it. That’s what I will do You can do then same with a v5 apparently
I have an idea for you, when you get back to the UK and goto the DMV (Drivers' license place), in addition to getting a "new" driver's license, apply for an "official i.d." but, before you go and apply google what you need to bring to apply for that i.d. What I'm getting at is in the future if you don't have your driver's license, you might be able to still cross the borders with your passport and official i.d. (maybe) Just a thought. Hope it helps. :)

I've never heard of any country taking a driving license apart from your own. It's not their property or right to take it, not one tiny bit. Plus, it's a minor traffic violation.
