china cat was written in Mexico by Robert Hunter. There was a cat, and LSD was involved. He wrote about the meaning of this song..."Nobody ever asked me the meaning of [“China Cat Sunflower”]. People seem to know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s good that a few things in this world are clear to all of us.."
I wouldn’t get hung up on the lyrics as beautiful and confusing they might be. Robert Hunter would never explain them because that would destroy the illusion. They are what you want them to be.
China Cat was written by Hunter/Garcia. Rider is a traditional blues/folk song. First modern recording was in 1927. These two songs were almost always played together like this...
China Cat Sunflower was originally played by the Dead with a slightly different beginning. It changed to the standard opening most have heard, when it was paired with I Know You Rider, a song from the 1920s that takes you on a whicked ride.
Should know that pre 1973 (est) pigpen was keyboards, harmonica and vocals, after him until 1980(again est) it was Keith godchauex (sp) on piano and his wife Donna on backup vocals. Then it was brent mydland until he died appox 1990. Yes I'm leaving out several short term players, but these three were integral to the changing sound of the band. So this was very early Keith's piano, without Donna on stage
Grateful Dead - bears choice - smokestack lightning. Or Hard to handle 1970 live Smokestack lightning is long but well worth it. A lot of their songs are longer they develop and explore differently every time they play them.
the live concert that lasts 3 hours ??? xD ahh bro idk my camera would die i would need to record in parts and uff thats a lot but i might just do it xD :D
try this "China > Rider" from 1982 - the music continued to evolve ua-cam.com/video/fp3-mYxlqjg/v-deo.htmlsi=A4H_uLpiaIgnANzI - and for fun; why not try listening to the Grateful Dead cover the Rolling Stones by playing "Satisfaction" one night in 1985 - enjoy ua-cam.com/video/aY2enKTSyhI/v-deo.htmlsi=AKitsWHcsev3M9CS&t=7487
