Just picked up a dirt cheap 01 Dakota. Had no lights on the 4wd indicator. Saw your video and pulled the TCCM out of one at a junkyard for $9. Anybody trying to do this should know that it it’s 3 screws holding it. You do have to pull the dash trim, trim with the brake release, and the trim piece that has the ash tray. It’s a tight squeeze getting in there but if you wiggle and jiggle enough you can get it out before disconnecting the 3 plugs. When I did it I was considering pulling even more stuff to get at it but was able to get at it without damaging anything. $9 and a couple hours to have working 4 wheel drive. Thanks a lot man!
I know this video is old but this may be able to help somebody out that's running into this problem now. The issue is that the timer module and the transfer case module are all obsolete The only ones you can get are used or allegedly remanufactured. Fuse 5 in the fuse box feeds power to the timer module and also to the transfer case module sometimes you'll find that that fuse is blown because the timer module is overloaded from the door lock solenoids. Another thing is that the switch is literally just a few voltage division resistors and some LEDs It actually has no integrated circuits in it whatsoever d fuse box sends power to the switch only for the lighting, the transfer case module controls the ground to the lights that's all it does. Another thing is that the transfer case module will measure the resistance of the shift motor itself. If you go to the c3 connector with the four big wires the two outer ones go to the motor you can actually use a power probe or something like that to juice up that circuit and see if the motor runs If the motor does not run and the resistance is high then the module will turn off the 5 volt circuit that controls the shift motor and also the lights
I ordered a CTM and hope it is the fix like it was for you. I had the service light on and no lights on the switch and no switch function at all. Cleared the service light but still no lights on the switch and no switch function. I will say as a general repair guide , as in where to look for the problem... if the problem is a service light or no lights on the switch the problem is likely upstream from the switch, or the switch. If the switch has lights but the 4wd wont engage the issue is probably down stream from the switch such as the actuator or the little drive motor on the t case.
What about just dashlights tailights accessory light parking lights aint working. Would this fix that issue too. I have an 2002 Dakota fuses keep blowing
I have an 03 and mine either doesnt want to go into 4x4 or it doesnt want to come out and i have fight for either way i go half the switches on both doors dont work either or gheu half work
@James Taf just curious if you went down the flow chart of troubleshooting. I checked for power ground 5 volt signals and everything and found the tccm did not send a reference to the switch. Replaced tccm which I bought from chrysler and same exact deal. Used a lab scope to measure signal from the pci bus to the tccm is present now but still nothing. I'm even getting correct pci signal from the CTM but still nothing. Ready to launch the bitch off a cliff. Just want to see if our readings match up.
Scott Rappleyea I know the feeling. I was so frustrated when I was working on mine. If you have all the correct power do the indicator lights come on? What exactly is your problem. Mine was intermittent power to the switch
James Taf no indicator lights and no 4wd whatsoever. I've been through a lot of steps with everything. Everything I've done points to either a bad tccm or the ctm isn't sending the correct signal to "wake" the tccm. I can get a signal from the bus network to but there's no real way to test apparently if it's the correct signal if that makes sense.
You can have fused power and good ground to the switch but the 5v reference the tccm sends to the switch is what turns the lights on and I can't get it consistently despite tons of diag shit
Thank you. I'm having the same issues with my 2003 Dakota. Are the CTM's with the final letters AI and AG interchangeable? Lots of AG CTMs out there having a lot of difficulty finding a CTM ending in AI
Thank you!! now i have a question. I did this same thing after your video and it did fix the 4x4 and the lights now come on and my door bell now dings. The problem I have is the security light was on my dash and my key fob doesnt work. the first time I locked my door I couldnt get the alarm to stop. I put the old unit back in and the fob works fine alarm went off. How do I fix this issue with the new TCCM
From what I understand that is something the dealer has to do. Your key fob has to match up with tcm I believe. I did not have a key fob so I did not have this issue.
Michael Smith I did purchase the tccm from a salvage yard. also if you change the ctm your key fob will no longer work unless u have dealer program it. good luck, it drove me crazy trying to figure it out. FYI 4x4 is. still working on my truck so I am sure my issue was the ctm. Let me know if you have any questions and I will try and help.
my problem is my daughter had it in 4x on dry pavement , now i have nothing but 2x? any suggestions where to start? just put tires on an they said cv joints were ok.
If ur lights come on when u turn the key over but then go out look for a damaged wire.one single wire among 5others stoped mine ...look at the plug at the trans
My headlights only turn on the right light and the brights. Also 4 wheel switch doesn’t make any light or noise. Think it’s the switches or something else??
this is the only video I can find for this issue.. but.. the heater/ac is also not working.... nothing at all happens when turning it on. Did u have the same issue?
Fixed the heater... had a cut wire. Now that we've bought a new blower motor and resister for our broken wire, (lol) we're back to trying to fix the 4x4. No indicator light. Doesn't engage the 4 wheel drive at all. Just wanted to say thanks for the video... clearly helped us identify what is what.
Jose Ibanez in my case the CTM was the issue. It wasn't "waking" the TCCM. They are both fairly common failures. If you have a decent DMM I can walk you through the troubleshooting to help you pinpoint it better.
@Scott, any chance you could please walk through the troubleshooting process? My brother's 04 Dakota is having a similar issue. The 4wd switch isn't lighting up in any setting, and the service 4wd light is on.
i have a problem with my 03 dodge Durango. the problem occurs when I put it in drive, the tachometer goes up but it doesn't change gears. which causes the engine to over heat. what would be the cause of that?
Check your transmission fluid - unless you have a closed transmission, low transmission fluid can cause that issue. If you changed your oil and it was red, you may have drained your transmission fluid instead - so check your oil level while your at it and if it's way up the dipstick, then you probably drained your transmission fluid and still added oil to you engine. I know it's been a few months so hopefully you've solved it by now.

I must say, you helped me more in 4 minutes than the 3 hours I've spent. Thank you thank you.
Your welcome. I'm glad it helped.

OOPs I should have mentioned the blue box is what I am trying to get out. I already replaced the black box.
It's been a while but I recall just getting a hold of what I could and pulling towards the front. I think there is only 3 or 4 screws.
@@jamestaf6820 Did you take off the aluminum piece?
@@garynelson2728 no I did not. Mine came out easily. Sorry you are having trouble.
Why is it so hard to find parts for this truck. I know it was discontinued in "09, but damn...
Very informative and solved my issues.
alan amos I'm glad it helped.
Thank you so much big help
Hey I need help bad. I changed the black box and now it doesn't work. My truck won't turn on and keeps shutting off
My service four-wheel drive lights on my indicator lights for my four-wheel drive or not on I was wondering what I could do to fix it
Thank you.!! helped me out a great deal
What about just dashlights tailights accessory light parking lights aint working.
Would this fix that issue too.
I have an 2002 Dakota fuses keep blowing
Just about to replace the CTM in my dakota, already replaced tccm and that fixed it for a couple of days. Did this fix work in the long run?
I have a bunch of screws out, but it is still sitting there solidly. How do you wiggle it out?
I have an 03 and mine either doesnt want to go into 4x4 or it doesnt want to come out and i have fight for either way i go half the switches on both doors dont work either or gheu half work

Scott Rappleyea no I did not. Your electrical skills must be a lot better than mine.
James Taf damnit lol I'm at a total loss and looking for any sort of input. Thanks anyway man.

I am not sure on AG AI difference. Wish I could be more helpful.

Michael Smith what ended up fixing your issue?
I'm having the same issue, I'm looking for a bcm.
my problem is my daughter had it in 4x on dry pavement , now i have nothing but 2x? any suggestions where to start? just put tires on an they said cv joints were ok.
ken price I am not sure. I hope she didn't tear up the transfer case. Good luck.
thanks,, yea me too ,,it was working a little,, it just stopped an there aren't or wasn't any noise when it stopped working

Danen Strachan I am not sure about your head light. I would check for power to the switch. You can find schematics online.
there was a recall about this on the dodge home page
this is the only video I can find for this issue.. but.. the heater/ac is also not working.... nothing at all happens when turning it on. Did u have the same issue?
Dolly • Happy•N•Montana No I did not. I only had an issue with heater. Sorry for not being able to help.
My 4hi light is staying on. Do you think this will help me.
Its stuck in 4hi. Blinks to awd but goes back to 4hi and stays on 4hi.
Thanks helped alot
was it the ctm that fixed the problem.or the tccm ?
Jose Ibanez in my case the CTM was the issue. It wasn't "waking" the TCCM. They are both fairly common failures. If you have a decent DMM I can walk you through the troubleshooting to help you pinpoint it better.

Did you need to match the numbers on the ctm?
Thanks, great video.
Thanks. I hope you were able to get your issue fixed.
i have a problem with my 03 dodge Durango. the problem occurs when I put it in drive, the tachometer goes up but it doesn't change gears. which causes the engine to over heat. what would be the cause of that?
Jeramiah Harding I have not experienced that issue and do not have an answer for you. Best of luck with the repair.
Check your transmission fluid - unless you have a closed transmission, low transmission fluid can cause that issue. Going to do that
Ur computer could have had an error loop
