  • One of the most beloved surf fishermen along the East Coast, not just his home waters of New Jersey, Shell E. Caris has been fishing the surf for nearly 70 years. In this special episode of the surfcast podcast, Shell talks about catching striped bass when they are feeding on bunker (Atlantic menhaden, pogies, etc.) From metal lips to pencil poppers to soft plastics and more, he divulges some of the tips, tricks and techniques he has learned that have produced striped bass as heavy as 55-plus pounds for him and his clients.

How about putting a swivel between the fixed hanger and inline hook

I have heard there are three stages a fisherman goes through. First, he wants to catch the most fish. Second, he wants to catch the biggest fish. And third, he wants to catch the most difficult fish. I contend there is a fourth stage, the guide stage. Here he (or she) puts the tackle in someone else's hands and catches fish, essentially, by remote control.
One quick tactics note: When confronted by Stripers swimming, with their mouths open, through dense schools of little peanut bunker (one to two inches long), I put on a Slug-Go or GT Eel in their eel color. On my retrieve I do my best to imitate an eel hunting, pursuing, and eating the peanuts. This has been successful, at times, in aggravating the Bass into hitting my lure.
