    I had no idea that they added a mark to line up your cornea. Learn something new on the channel every time I watch!.
    I had it done about 6 or 7 years ago, and while the procedure was pretty terrifying, it is great to be able to see without glasses. Luckily it seems to have stuck pretty well. I can see about the same now as back then.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 роки тому +1

      Yes it is. There a few different procedures. Some use just a laser and no scalpel. I had lasik done 10 years ago. Was a pretty simple procedure and the best 3000 I ever spent. Have a friend that has been putting it off as long because he is scared. To go from a -9 prescription to 20-20 in 10 minutes is pretty remarkable. I don't wear glasses except when I am working on close up work for soldering and stuff and these are only +1 off the shelf readers. I use them for fine work like terminating fiber optics and fine soldering and that is it.

    19:03 I had a similar problem with my Toshiba beta VCR and interference. Instead of a plasma TV, it was a cheap wall-wart style power supply on a converter I was using for capture. The same style very distinct lines in the picture. I could even use my hand near the video head cables to make it worse/better. Oddly I've never run into that problem on the similar aged VHS VCRs, so what about the beta design makes them so much more susceptible?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 роки тому +1

      I get it on VHS too, the plastic case models. When the metal top is on no more interference. Shielding is good.

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech 4 роки тому +1

      @@12voltvids Makes me wonder if there's a shield that was missing from mine, or just cheap design. I should try that cheap power supply in conjunction with a plastic case VHS model.

    Why on Earth would a subscriber get annoyed at you for uploading too many videos?. That's idiotic and the fact he then complains to everyone, even your ISP seems to me to possibly suggest some kind of mental illness. Any normal person would simply ignore videos they weren't interested in or unsubscribe if they weren't interested in your content. Personally I've enjoyed your videos over the years and thanks to you and others doing similar repairs I've learned a lot, have several devices I've been able to either get working again or keep in good working order thanks to channels like yours.

  • @gabrigpb

    Really good content Dave. I like the beta format (specially repairing) and enjoy this quality material.
    As per the dihedral adjustments, I've never seen the need of performing it, but you made me think twice about that. In most service manuals it's stated that this is usually not necessary as head chips are already factory aligned. Funny enough I do own the original conical screws on their transparent cylinder case.
    One small remark: this machine is not exactly a 711B chassis but a 711B2. I personally prefer the former from a reliability perspective while the later is slightly quicker in loading/unloading tapes. 711B Chassis were having most of the mechanical switches "enclosed", except the ones on the reel base. 711B2 had "open" switches which nowadays are randomly showing poor contact issues.
    Edit for a different question: the connector you left "floating" for the flying erase functionality is not also containing the hifi signal? At least, in european machines the upper rotary transformer is usually left for HiFi heads.
    Please keep with the good work, big thumbs up for you.

      Not the bearings. The rotary transformer failed, grinding away internally.This one works, minus the flying erase heads, which are only needed for insert editing which will never be done. If Beta was better than vhs why did they replace the beta with vhs

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 роки тому +4

      Beta failed due to poor forecasting and marketing by Sony. Fun fact, sony was one of the developers of VHS as well. Sony, matsushita and victor company of japan were all working on a low cost home video system. Sony did not feel that the VHS design with its smaller head drum delivered a good enough picture and with all the moving parts considered it mechanically inferrior.
      They scaled down a umatic design to the original betamax design. Meanwhile jvc took the designs that they had all been working on and made some minor changes and launched VHS. They then licensed anyone that wanted to make their own decks. Sony on the other hand was holding picture quality above all where as the VHS camp didn't care, they wanted longer recirding times and traded off picture quality for recording time. It was apparent that the public didn't really care about the picture. Those with good TVs generally did buy beta. When I worked we were a big sony dealer and sold tons of beta to people that cared about picture quality. We also rented movies on beta and as long as those were available beta sold well. The market into the late 80s was still about 40% for beta but that changed quick as soon as sony admit defeat and brought out their own vhs, the slv555 which was based on Sony's original mechanical concept for the VHS design and they made it known when they launched it that they were one of the developers of the format.

    Gee, what's it to that guy who complains how many videos you upload in one day? He surely can watch your videos at his own pace and it's none of his business what you do in your own time.

      No I believe the glue that holds the ferrite wafers on the rotary transformer is failing and the rotary transformer touches and pieces chip and get ground up inside it. As to this goof ball, maybe he will get so upset he will blow a gasket and stroke out.

    Why on EARTH would anyone think to complain about how many videos you upload?!? That's THE most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Do we know what the actual basis of his annoyance is?

      I have many trolls here that whine and complain. Obviously people with nothing better to do. They whine and complain yet they are still here. To quote from howard stern autobiography "people that like him listen to him for an average of 1.6 hours a day, top reason given to hear what he was going to say next. And for those that hate him, they listened for an average of 3.1 hours a day. Top reason given, to hear what he was going to say next. I leave the trolls be, but when they start making trouble I am pretty quick to mute them permanently.

      Because that's how the Japanese roughly pronounce it, and they invented the format.

    • @12voltvids

      Actually it was named after the Greek symbol beta. The second letter in the Greek alphabet and was so named as it was the second cassette format that Sony developed, umatic being the first. All cassettes have the beta logo. It is pronounced with the short e sound, not long e such as some have suggested. Those same people constantly argue that solder is pronounced sodder. They probably think aint and yall is a real word too.
