At first look during Essen prep I was so giving this a pass, then I came across enough buzz for me to take a closer look and I'm really happy I did (and waited as long as I did in line for it, lol). This is such a satisfying quick puzzle to throw in at pretty much any point in the game night. I don't usually gravitate to a lot of "fillers" because I just don't feel like they give enough satisfaction, even at the short time they occupy the table. But this one does. It's quick, snappy and it's really satisfying.
Seems like it is a bit like Button Shy's Wonder Tales although I dont have either, yet. Wonder Tales is on order from GF Summe Reprint Campaign. What do you think?
Yes Zee!! I agree its so charming, i love the simplicity but still has the crunch with those decision. Lets call It Middle Ages Combo, thats better right....

No theme? Come on, guys. It's about the inhabitants (each card is unique) of a castle, not castles themselves. And the way the cards interact with each other is great. There's lots of theme regarding the relationship between these roles. It's not obvious at first glance, but a lot of these contain little puns as well. Take the prince and the stable boy for one, why the gravedigger can be found in the upper class cards, or why the best use of the king and queen is in combination with the executioner.
You have to have an above average active imagination to find card games thematically immersive since most are abstract and puzzly in nature. This one looks no different in that respect.
"a lot of theme" is a stretch but I do agree the character abilities are often amusing and well integrated - that doesn't happen in a game with "no theme"
Been playing this a lot on BGA and I really like it. I agree with Zee, I think there's enough where you have to choose whether to take your ideal card but leave the messenger on a row where there's a good card for your opponent to take, or maybe spend a key to remove those cards from the game completely.
Played this game a week ago and absolutely love it! The only negative is that it doesn't have a solo mode so I can play it even when I don't have anyone to play it with lol
I really enjoy how each new card adds a end game scoring condition so your constantly adapting to try to score with every card. great quick game. love it.
I absolutely love this game. The combos and the variety of unique cards. I just find it satisfying in the end. Also, great at 2 player if that is your primary count.
@@montanaricello there is also a limited number of cards you play, in Faraway each player will play only 8 cards and each card will score depending on what cards you played in your tableau.
Tried it on BGA and didnt really get the hype. Found myself pretty bored rather quickly. Ended up just buying and placing cards randomly trying to end the game as soon as possible and won lol. Love combo games like Vale of Eternity too.
Funny you like the art and dislike the theme. I hate the art in this game, and art is usually one of the big things to draw me into a game. I think the theme works well enough; most of the card names and abilities make sense to me when I see them -- and there's little references between cards like the prince and the pauper. It is a decent game, but I would enjoy it more if the art was different.
I wish they would come up a better name to describe theses kind of games. The term "filler game" bugs me. it sounds like it's not a real game. Why not just say small game instead? Sounds better to me.

There is a simple solo variant on BGG you might enjoy.

I wonder if Zee finds that this game gives him similar feels to Caper, which is one of his favorites. I had that impression while watching.
This is…just a game. Nothing unique, but not bad. Just so many games now that you should probably use your time on one of them.

From the looks of it, a run-of-the-mill tableau builder, very well executed, but ultimately themeless and boring
