He's taping up like he's fighting for the gold medal. The Judoka toyed with him the entire time.
LOL. This guy is such a tool. "He got me with a move I should have seen coming..." This is priceless.

I did Judo for a few years with some good Judokas at my club I think it's one of the most underrated martial arts, it instills you with confidence and because of the randori you get plenty of practice fighting from standing which is better for self defense in a lot of situations as apposed to sub mission grappling that I do now where we start from knees a lot.

Well said. I personally think its more fun to launch people with Judo, but agree completely that having someone locked with no escape, or tapping out in seconds, feels great. These sports should be united in my opinion and I find it saddening that people separate them so much. Even though it has drifted so far, I believe the revolution that took place (1880's) from old Japanese J(i)u-Jitsu to Judo and BJJ took place with the intention to create a maximumly efficient art- standing & ground.

I'm a yonkyu. Originally did "Jun Fan Gung Fu" (aka Jeet Kune Do) with Taky Kimura (Bruce Lee's best man at his wedding & pupil) then switched to where Bruce Lee learned his throwing and grappling technique, the first judo dojo in North America, Seattle Dojo. At first I cross-trained in Brazilian JJ via JKD then decided to go to the original foundation, Judo.

People tape to help support slight joint injuries. They also tape to protect open friction burns. Some people tape parts that are unusually convex, such as the big toe knuckle or ankle, to prevent friction burns. Some folks wear mouthguards because they get tired of slamming their teeth together from things like getting a shoulder in the jaw. It also prevents you from grinding your teeth during a fight.

Remco Pardoel was a judoka in UFC 2. He won two fights before losing to Royce Gracie in the semi-finals. I'm not saying he was the best representative of Judo that could have competed, but he was a judoka.

Hopefully there are many others like you and I, who can appreciate what martial arts have to offer and focus more on the 'dou' or way of life of the sport, rather than the politics. Hope your teacher comes back and you get to learn some good Judo moves.

Actually, we do plenty of newaza. It's half of every training session. I was talking about striking. Judo has low risk punches and kicks incorporated in not so much for knockout effect, but as distractions to close the gap or provoke the opponent into charging so we can obtain a throw. Striking is not usually taught below the brown belt level, but they're not difficult to learn.

There is striking in Kata, such as Goshin Jitsu. Striking in Judo is called Atemi Waza. It is occasionally taught. Judo is designed so that 100% effort can be used without injury. If you cannot practice at 100% you cannot truly learn how a technique works. The strikes in Judo are designed to be debilitating. You cannot practice punching someone in the throat or groin safely. Striking is a very small part of Judo. It is only taught for kata, self defence, and as part of the history of judo.

Just like there BJJ focuses on grappling and submissions aspects of Jiu-jutsu, there are different schools of judo that focus on different aspects of throwing and grappling. Kosen judo for examples has extensively elaborated on newaza. Its a matter o what the particular school wants to focus on and teach.

  • @Chuikov23

One throw with control, power, and speed wins. The object of a judo match is to demonstrate control of your opponent. If you do that with a throw, 25 second pin, or submission you win.

@LidarDan15 although I agree with you, note, the tv host (Jason) is well trained in grappling due to his JiuJitsu training for MMA. Since the judoka did not display any ground game when fighting Jason, it's hard to know what would be the real outcome in a ADCC style match.

I have heard that they used Jiu-Jitsu because they felt that their art was for self-defense and, not a sport(like Judo). They took into account that an opponent would be striking them and, adjusted the techniques accordingly. They also frequently fought against other arts as early as the 1930's.

Rubbish is has been my primary base and is highly effective in street scenarios throwing someone onto concrete usually ends a fight and if it doesn't i choke them or break an arm. the advantage judo has is that you know it works because you use it at full power when training against a resistant opponent, lots of deadly arts practitioners have no idea what its like to not have someone comply and move the way they expect i know i can throw and submit. Plus it is the basis that fedor works from.

  • @deepluv2kvi

In the video above, the judo practitioner learned how to adapt to the style of his opponent. He made modifications and used to his advantage leverage, patience, and set-ups The BJJ practitioner was relying to heavily on what worked in the past and thought that was enough. He had no strategy. He needs more versatility in is bag of ticks. There is no one great martial art. It's the student himself, his discipline and natural talent that makes him/her a winner.

Judo comes from Jujutsu (aka "jujitsu" modern day spelling) Did you see the last throw the BJJ guy was lost. He was thrown to the ground like a rag doll. Judo students are taught balance and technique, the BJJ guy had no balance & no center of gravity. He couldn't get a throw off; hence, if the judo guy wanted he could have done submission. Submissions & joint locks are taught in judo.

Remco Pardoel was a BB in Judo and, fought in the the fight went to the ground.
They also didn't misspell Jiu-Jitsu, just came up with their own spelling. The tem Jiu-Jitsu came from Japan and, was originally written in characters, not letters, so it's spelling is up to the translator.
The Gracies also fought over the use of their family name, not naming it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

I think its regular sports tape. You use it to prevent damage to the tips of your fingers, as a judo gi is rather frictive (sp?). You can open or damage fingers and skin when you pull or are pulled free while keeping a tight grip. Some judokas even tape 2 fingers together.

True it had its roots in older jiu jitsu. But that is essentially like saying the M16 had its roots in the smoothbore musket. One inevitably follows the other but the differences that make it 'judo' rather than 'jiu jitsu' were developed in the post-feudal era.
The emphasis on removing all strength from one's technique and tranforming it into a competitive sport show how it was developed in and for the modern world and not the bloody conflicts of feudal japan.

I agree with your view of mouthguard, but not the tape. If you visit any high level competition, most players tape themselves to some extend. Taping can prevent certain injuries, and believe me, when you train and compete enough you'll realize it. When people tape their fingers, it prevents the excessive rubbing against the finger joint which can quickly become inflamed after hard training and cause people not to grip well.

It's a bit like wrestling. It involves throws and pins that are very similar to free style wrestling. But sport Judo includes chokes and armbars. Also, in wrestling you fight for points. In Judo victory is determined by demonstrating control. You make a clean throw in wrestling, you get a point and continue. In Judo you win.

@KAMAERUE If I Recall my history correctly, it was created by a Mr. G Kano (hope that's the correct way round sure Trad. Japanese names should have the surname first) who wanted to do Jujtisu... but due to his height, he wasn' t really taken seriously. He found the best JJ school by following the trail of broken bones and chatting to doctors.
Judo was derived from Jujitsu, which was most certainly used on the battlefield (look at ancient Japanese silk paintings).

I take Judo it was developed by Kanō Jigorō who took the moves of jujitsu and made them easyer, safer to train with and less deadly. Judo is a sport not a combat art, it focouses on more throwing than anything. Jujitsu was a combat system of the Samurai.

Gracie Family learned judo first and for marketing purpo$e$ renamed it "jiujitsu" (misspelled it) & tried to re-write their history eventually leading to the Gracie family fighting among themselves over naming rights. I find this very hard to believe.
All the Judoka I know or have watched train spend VERY little time on Ne Waza. The main reason is that in the sport of Judo, the quick stand-ups (ten seconds WTF?) mean there is no incentive to do anything other than stall on the ground until the referee stands you back up.
In the clip, Jason had a Triangle Choke set up, but NO this is Judo and Ne Waza is frowned upon...

That 5000lbs of pressure is only effective if the person muscles isn't tense. The clinical trail you got your results from they did on a mat with Judo practitioners.Other normal people would control large muscle groups out of fear, these contracted muscles would act as a buffer between bone and surface.Hence there is a high probability of bruising, dislocation's,not breaks.

and yes, martial arts is about respecting your opponent, that's why you bow before and after you fight, as a thank you to the opponent for fighting you.
i wasn't saying he should go all out and ippon the guy as fast as he possibly could, but if they're doing a documentary, it should at least be somewhat legit.

jigoro definitely designed judo to be the "gentle way" to reflect his buddhist beliefs but still preserving the fundamentals of momentum control/manipulation. the form of jujitsu that is most common today, brazilian, has basically brought the standing fight out of the art. i forget who the japanese dood was that brought jujitsu to brazil. but the gracie family is responsible for turning the art into a boring and lengthy struggle for submission filled with triangles and flying arm bars.

I don't see what you are talking about. He descrived the match perfectly, and he acknowledge the judoka's advanced strength, power, and technique. And the judoka's own description of the strategy he used was consistent with what he said. Also, the judoka specifically said he was not going to rely on newaza. which for all practical purposes mean that in ground situation he was going to stall (which would keep hollywood from earning any half points) when it got to the ground, and to win by ippons.

BJJ vs Judo - the only differences is BJJ has the triangle choke, and the guard position - there are a lot of the same moves - but a lot BJJ players know throws, but seem to not how to execute as well as Judo

Judo fights on the ground too. BBJ is basicly just ground, Judo is both. Jujitsu is the best becasue it isnt a sport but a combat system, and uses strikes, weapons, grapling, groundfighting, eye gowging, groin kicking ect.

@le2key if a judoka closes a distance and throws you with lets say a powerful and clean uchimata or Ippon Seio Nage onto the ground, there's a good chance you will be knocked out (KO) if not KO than definitely shocked for at least 2-4 seconds + bodily damage (broken ribs, hip, shoulder, etc). During the 2-4 seconds that you're in shock the judoka can either gain distance or proceed to the ground into a submission and trust me during the 2-4 seconds you wont have any idea of what's happening.
