On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

The Iran-Iraq war and especially the air war is criminally unknown in the West. Some amazing feats of airmanship during that conflict by pilots on both sides - especially the Iranians. Kudos for brining attention to this fascinating chapter of history.
agreed, it provides some of the best air to air combat since Vietnam. I find it truly fascinating.
@@GrowlingSidewinder true, I find it generally difficult to study but learning about the air combat in the iran-iraq has been genuinely interesting for me

The strike on the H3 complex by Iranian pilots is honestly movie worthy, and definitely one of the most batshit insane air raids in history. Top Gun Maverick ain't got nothing on these legendary real-life pilots.
@@weir-t7y check out the work by Tom Cooper and his books, he has very interesting stuffs
If you wonder what is written on the helmet of the Iranian pilot of F14, it's a calligraphy of a poem "چو ایران نباشد تن من مباد" which means: "If Iran ceases to exist, so shall me"
“Such is the passing that you must leave,
All men must die, and it is vain to grieve.”

@@Camilo_Znowhere near as patriotic as americans tho. Have u seen some of the comments on those f22 posts on instagram. Crazy patriotism 😂
Excellent video... With regards to the use of Phoenix the Iranian's started using 2 Phoenix per aircraft due to weight, they lost a couple of Tomcats due to flat spins due to the weight of the aircraft. Also the fact that they found that during in dogfights they only fired up to a max of 2 missiles due to the time it took for locking up and the distances at which the engagements where started at along with the the limited rounds they had available.
Lol as a French citizen when you said “French said it was more of capable to deal with F14s I hon-hon’ed and almost choked on my baguette. No way in bérets’ hell it was, France just bamboozled the Iraqi so hard I don’t know if I should laugh or cry that we sold aircraft to them
Its not like Iraqis had a choice. Their last top of the line fighter anyone else was willing to sell them was MiG-23...
Who are you fooling that you are french 🤪😝
In fairness it was probably better to have for air to air than the MiG-25
But that's not really a high bar to set
I doubt the Iraqis believed it, just looking at the F1 is enough to tell it's not going to do very well in the air superiority role. But that was the best thing they could get their hands on.
you french trolled the Brits so hard in 1982 with all the exocets lol
I was a Hawk missile crewman in the Marines back in the '80s. It's funny to see Hawk missiles hanging off the wings of a Tomcat. Those are big missiles, and it puts the size of the Tomcat into perspective for me.
my dad as an iranian participated in this conflict, he wanted to be a pilot but due to allergy problems his request was declined, still he served for 2 years as an infrantyman, tough my mom never told me anything more specific (my dad never wanted to talk about it )
Respect to your dad serving his country!💪🏻

🇮🇷❤️
many thanks for the video
back in 70's, I grew up in shiraz airbase and watched the tomcats fly in the sky everyday.
This video inspired me to read more about this war. The H3 air strike details are insane. The Iranians flew some over 1,000km, refueling 4 times over the duration at only 300ft above the ground. Absolutely insane.
This was so cool! The MiM-23s were used as substitutes for the Aim-54s as they were not running out of them but because many of the phoenix missiles’ components had past their shelf lives like the thermal batteries as of course Iran was not receiving any parts or more importantly the upgrade kits to keep the missiles updated (they would later receive a number of these kits secretly during the Iran-contra affair).
The Mirage F.1EQs arrived in November 1981 and initially did very well in ambushing the F-14As using a technique called “Giraffing” which was flying at very low level then making a straight up climb to level off behind the F-14s before engaging using the powerful Mantra 530F “Super” medium range missiles which were very good weapons.
The Iranian Air Force countered this by placing their F-5E Freedom Fighters at low altitudes to cover the F-14s and catch any low flying F.1s. In all the Mirage F.1EQs shot down probably 6-8 Tomcats during the conflict but in turn maybe as many as 30 were lost to the F-14s. Truly a amazing clash between these aircraft.
I believe the recorded numbers claim only 3-4 tomcats lost max to f1s the tactic the f14s used was also just baiting them, f14s would fly 20 miles off the border and wait for the mirages to come up behind them Iranian GCI would tap 3 times on comms letting the f14 know it was being trailed as there was radio silence in effect. The f14 would do a split S and shoot a juicy Phoenix at the f1 more often than not scoring a kill.
One thing that upsets me is how the revolution didn't allow iran's air force to receive their F-16s. They would absolutely dominate iraqi air force alongside the tomcats. .
What's interesting to me about the Iranian F-14 was it was told to the public back in the 80's that since the fall of the government the Tomcats weren't used that much because of a lack of spare parts. But decades later when more was released about the Iran Contra affair, the parts needed got to Iran after all. Thus the Tomcat was used more than we were told 40 years ago.
Well to be clear...iranis also used Soviet spare parts as well lol.....plus they also scavenged most of their tomcats in order to atleast make some tomcats airworthy
@@thespatulaa Soviet spare parts for tomcats!?! really ??? hahaha what the joke!!!scavenged most of their tomcats to atleast make some tomcats airworthy!?! how many tomcats did they have to scavenged??? maybe you don't know but every fighter needs to change spare parts after some hours of flying and Iran find what they needed in black market and after they made some spare parts and because of that they manage to operate their tomcats even after 40 yeas of service!!!because United States decided to destroy all their spare parts to keep them out of Iranian's hand!!!
Not to mention that Israel also played a huge role in keeping the Iranian Air Force going. Both Iran and Israel HATED Saddam.
Iran’s Air Force is so fascinating to me. They’ve never been incredibly strong, but their achievements with the F14A and the upgrades they’re doing to both it and the Phoenix missile is impressive. I’d love to see an Iranian pilot face off against a higher tier flanker in BVR.
This reminds me, Is there a place to request for future video ideas? Id love to see a BVR fight between the Su-57 and the F35, it’s the most likely fight to occur between 5th Gen aircraft as the border nations of Russia own the latter.
Let's be real, the only thing impressive about Iran is the current regime standing up to US/Israel. Buying elite machines from ''Western'' designers isn't impressive. Just as the Iraqis buying form the Soviets or the French isn't impressive. Iran was just another population controlled by the US with military tech rewards for a time, like so many others. Unless a population is capable of actually creating elite aircraft by itself, it is never going to be a first class air force.
Their ingenuity was only surpassed by their tenacity.
I really wished they didn't have designs on running the Middle east.
@@peterweller8583 you mean like the US still do?
@@AKAtheA maybe we can keep the politics out of here.

You are recently cover the Iran-Iraq air combats more and that's really awsome. Because the air battles of this war is mostly forgotten. If you search enough and especially watch interviews and documentaries about the Iranian pilots you will find even more interesting battles that has never been said anywhere before.
Great job covering this untold war and wish you luck from Iran❤
Totally random thought due to the “Iranian Jester” remark:
I now want a Samir companion RIO/WSO for an Indian Su-30MKI.
“Triple caution! Triple caution!”
"Listen to me Samir!"
Samir, you're breaking the jet.
“You can sneak up on anything you can kill it technically” Maverick proved this in the last movie
thats why a MIG-21 is still dangerous.. if its carrying modern R-73s and it sneaks on you cause it went in fast at low level it will ruin the day of whoever was there not very aware.. The chance is remote but renember the Iraquis managed to sneak and kill a Hornet with a MIG-25 in a suposedly well controled and secure space with multiple SA assets
top gun is not something to look at if you want realism
The mirage is gonna show us how to hold a phoenix with your face got me😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂I'm dyingg
So is that Mirage.
...and as usual GS presents us these jokes with the calmest voice.
Same.
I'm really happy to see these videos getting closer and closer to reality.
Details like considering that Iranians were short on phoenix missiles are making a huge difference.
"That mirage is going to show us how to correctly hold a phoenix missile with your face." I found that so much funnier than I probably should've.🤣😂🤣 Can't breathe, Quality content. Keep up the good work.
I didn’t know the F-14 was such a badass. Hearing you talk about it and doing my own research. Very interesting.
Cool historical matchup. I learned from reading wiki that an Iraqi Mirage F1 launched the only successful anti-ship missile attack against a US Navy ship, the USS Start in 1987.
correct, and killed 37 americans and wounded like 40 I think. Tried to blame Iran for the incident, which america did not buy they then apologized I believe.
That was not a Mirage F-1 that fired the Exocet Anti-Ship Missiles against USS Stark. It was a Falcon 50 that had been modified with the radar and nose cone of the Mirage F-1 and was originally intended to be used as a training aircraft for Iraqi Pilots.
@@GrowlingSidewinder hey check up your facts it was not a mirage and the Iraqis admitted it was a mistake from the beginning
Makes me remember the story of a single Iranian Phoenix missile downing three Mig-23s!

Heck yeah another Tomcat vid.
I'm here for the Mirage F1 content. Love
Just the ingenuity of putting those hawks on the plane. It seems insane, but it's brilliant...
I'm from Iran .Most of the jet pilots were trained before the Iranian revolution in Shah Priod.
"If you can sneak up on it..." Cue F-22 in the mirrors.
Not just another cool video, but I loved the history lesson about the Iran-Iraq air war. A lot of things you mentioned I had no idea about. Especially scrambling a lone ship to face multiple bandits. Balls of steel!
Well done Growling! One of your best vids... Love it. Keep rocking that Tomcat bud!
Great vid as always, it would be great to see you piloting one of those F1C's against a Mig 23 as another 80's matchup. Maybe 2 vs 2.
It'll be great when the MiG 23 gets early accessed.
Really enjoyed this! Love the mix of long range and short range in the same sortie, super super cool
"When you open UA-cam and the first video on your feed is a new GS video posted within the hour, is the best feeling ever"!!! As always GS,another amazingly edited and performance of a video. As an iraqi who wasn't born when the war was happening, I can say this is pretty accurate.
Nice video, wish I had DCS to play the Mirage
Well, it's free, but you need to have a good computer to run it !
The Iranian rio should be Mahmoud, its more persian, and my grandpa Mahmoud was involved in Irans purchasing of the f-14, so it makes sense.
It's sad we never got the Super Tomcat...
Those Hawk SAMs on the F-14 as a Fox 1 are just so awesome.
Love the Tomcat. Never a bad video with the Cats.
I have a book called Iranian F-14 Tomcat Units in Combat. There was on Iranian F-14A Tomcat pilot named Qiyassi who shot down 3 Dassault Mirage F.1EQs
The Hawk on the Pylon of the F-14 was a nice touch.
Excellent video as always and with historical perspective . Btw, has anyone experienced unlimited fuel not working for the F1 when unlimited fuel is selected in the mission?
Should do Irani f4 phantoms against the f1 and mig 21.
2 vs 4
Jamshid, your Iranian RIO, is pretty good at English
well, they were trained by the americans so I guess that kind of makes sense lol
Thanks GS for another BVR to merge video!
I really enjoy these history based fights. I would like to see some of the Israeli fights over the years.
Wow...I always thought the Hawk missile systems was SA only. I went to Redstone Arsenal once I finished basic training. They've many missile battery maintenance schools there and remember now that I had friends and acquaintances that were instructed in Hawk missile systems repair. When I saw them, they were always mounted on towed chassis, but we had mobile chassis with Sidewinders, and I knew that planes could carry AIM-9s, so I should've realized that Hawk (or I-HAWK) could be used on airborne platforms too.
Years later (1992-1993), I wondered why the US Army stopped using that system. I initially thought it was because Kuwait had them when they were invaded by Iraq, but I think it was because it was replaced by the Patriot system, and because the Hawk was a relatively old missile system (1950s technology) and was probably due to be replaced anyways.
It was something only the Iranians did and as he stated here it was because they were running low on Phoenix missiles.
Your final statement was necessary of “if you can sneak up on anything you can kill it” 👍
Thanks for simulating the tomcat, just learned her weapon systems today XD very interesting dogfight indeed
Cold war air combat was interesting. These conflicts of the 80s like the Iran-Iraq War and the Falklands Conflict really should be more analyzed.
Crazy to think the F1 is one of the few planes to shoot down an F14
How timely. I was just watching some video on the operations room channel about this war. Love the content man, keep it up
Very nice simulation, thank you!
Jimsheed v. Jester, The ultimate mirror match of the century
Jamsheed not Jimsheed
Would love to see a very long range bvr (like 200+nm) engagement between the F-14 and F-15.
I loved your Cat vs Foxhound vid and wonder how the Cat would fare against the Eagle.
In the Eagle you would be defending Phoenixes for a while before you get the chance of firing back an AMRAAM-C
Going into the video asking myself how exactly is a Mirage F1 a match to the Tomcat
I studied in a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) program and one of our professors told us about how there were many Iranian students here in the 70's when we were still friendly. And of course they had a lot of oil money, so the students who made it here were driving Firebird's and wearing gold medallions... lol Good times. A lot like the Chinese driving Ferrari's around our campus now.
And now there are gigantic disaporas in the US.
Mirage has a sinister, crow-like look to it that's just badass. F14 on the other hand is a work of art.
Thanks sir for remaking the history 😌
Fantastic video. Your flying is truly inspiring. Makes me wish to be able to fly the F-14 in DCS as well

@@maybesherlock734 well, I'd be more than happy but considering how things feel like, I feel it'd be hard for them to find a good reference and source on what to say and how to speak. Besides it can make it hard for players to understand what he's saying

I hope well get the Super 530F on the Mirage F1, for that sweet sweet historical accuracy.
When doing such scenarios, do you always retry until you succeed (for a fun video) or are you just that good that it's one try only?
I do mostly the first try unless something stupid happens like I hit the ground, or lag ruins something, or something very anticlimactic that would ruin the video. But generally speaking its a single run thru and whatever happens happens. That way I don't introduce any bias into it and it doesn't get repetitive with me winning all the time that kind of thing.
Great fight GS, you never disappoint!
As a side note, I think the Iranian paint scheme looks cool.
Well, that went pretty much how I expected it to.
Will be interesting to see a redo when f14 early ( with alr45 rwr) is a thing and when mirage f1ee is added. Still not an eq but it's s closer for a stand in given f1ee has more capable rwr as well as an ability to carry jamming pods, which eq had.

Hello friend, I am from Iran and I am looking at your Fido. All Iranian pilots are one of the best. They are part of the American army, during the era of the Shah of Iran, one of the fighters in the sky with an Iraqi MiG, with a Phoenix missile, a lead of an Iraqi airline that was in a A group of three were flying and all three Iraqi planes were shot downWith a shot that is unique in the world
For anyone who didn't get it our good friend is talking about facts that iranian pilots trained in usa befor islamic revolution so with good talent and good training they became among best pilots in the world .... and he is talking about that time a f14 managed to shoot down 3 mig 23s flying in close formation with only 1 phoenix missile and it is indeed unique in the world
can you pls do a player vs player fight in the mig21bis vs mirage f1 in a guns only fight u can use missiles if u want , i really want to know which is the better fighter cus in theory the mig21 is a better fighter has all the advantages (aoa, twr, climb rate, accleration) , the only disadvantage is that its a delta wing , the f1 performs worse in everyway (in the stuff thats mentioned above) but the only advantage is that it may have a better airframe and we cant really know how big of a role it plays unless u test it.
Perhaps the Iran-Contra gait was about providing Iran with hawk and phenix missiles

*"That Mirage is F-1 is gonna show us how to correctly hold a Phoenix missile with your face."*
-Growling Sidewinder (2022)
Say Growling, why don't you use the seam lock for the Fox-2s in the F-14?
One of are terps had been a pilot in some sort of mig in the Iraqi military. I never worked directly with the guy thankfully and I had never met someone with so much pride and hubris, it was extremely difficult talking to him because all he would talk about is how the Iraq military was the best military in the world. He would tell us the reason migs were better were because they had two engines while are jets only had one. We were way too busy to care to correct him, and we also weren't air force guys. it definitely was entertaining. Oh, he also said that iraq won the Iraq Iran conflict lol. We had no clue nor did we care. It was way too hard to find a good interpreter and he could at least half ass that so people would let him talk about whatever.
"That Mirage is going to show us how to correctly hold a Phoenix- with your face." - Lost it completely. Fark that was funny.
