Wow. It’s clear that a lot of thought when into making the KH1 ergonomic to use as a handheld transceiver, but it seems to have come at the cost of table top ergonomics… I don’t think I have seen you have to work so hard to set up on a picnic table and it still looked like cables and wires criss-crossing everything!

It is a bit awkward on a tabletop, but still very usable. Keep in mind a lot of my fiddling around has to do with making the radio fit within the camera view and making it presentable. :) Also, I really should have secured the antenna better.

Oooh, a new drop. Perfect to warm up my brain for trying a lunch POTA. I did my first CW activation in almost a year yesterday and made a fool of myself, but it was fun enough to try again today. Thanks for keeping me thinking about it.

Hey, you got on the air and played CW! Good for you!!! I hope to work you P2P soon!

To me, that nuance about having to reverse the paddle in the menu when using external sounds more like a design error for the KHPD1. I asked about that on the forums to see if there is a reason Elecraft did that but got no response from anyone.
I've also heard that it in fact was a design error and they have since fixed it but I can't confirm that until I get my KH1 Edgewood to check. It seemed inconvenient enough to tempt me to design my own KHPD1 that doesn't have such an obvious flaw.

It was nice to see that someone with a lot of throw line experience still has some issues sometimes. I almost never hit it on the first try and usually don't get it as high as I would like. But the good news is that I can still get on the air and have some fun.

N7CQR here. End of day 2 of a 5 day Oregon coast Pota 'vacation'. I was enjoying how many chasers in your video are also ones I worked over the past 2 days.We are in the midst of 3 'atmospheric rivers' of rain which can bring 3-4 inches of rain and flooding! We used to call these the Pineapple express-warm temps and tons of rain. But I can work around it. Hoping for tomorrow 12/3 for 3-4 more parks and connecting P2P during HWRBOTA. Thanks for the great videos!

Nice set up but I just don’t like the tinny sound when keyed. Thanks for the video.

Appreciate the “5 minutes” on 15 Meters for those us where 40 Meters is a stretch.

I have peaked as a CW operator now that Thomas has complimented my fist. I can now go back to ft8 without being shamed. Video needs more Hazel.

@@briansalsbery9968actually the confirmation would be helpful. Ive been working on my own "Worked All UA-cam Subscriptions" award. Narrowly missed W1DED last weekend during the 10m contest. Thomas needs a qsl manager to handle his increasing celebrity.

My KH1 hasn't arrived yet but I'm perplexed by this video. I thought the compactness and all-in-one ability of the KH1 was the primary reason for using the radio. I understand the EFHW but if I wanted to have external keys, speakers, notpads, etc., I'd just bring my mountaintopper or my KX2.

So I think I'll probably operate full-on pedestrian mobile in maybe 30% of my KH1 activations. When I'm at a park with trees, I have time to deploy an antenna, and there are picnic tables around? I'm lazy enough that I'm happy to operate from a picnic table. :)
I love, love, love the KH1, but if it could only be used pedestrian mobile, it would be less useful to me. The fact that I can use any antenna and it works on a picnic table as well as in the hand is a huge plus for me, at least.
Also, I love the KH1, but I also love my KX2 and Mountain Toppers, so I say use them all! :)

Field testing a rig at this point is more for functionality than ergonomics, I suspect. As the software updates come out, that is what needs testing. To use the as designed, you probably won't have a tripod and camera to mess with. Also, how will the rig handle every antenna you throw at it. I just a SOTA using the KX2 but took the MTR3B as a backup. It needs a resonant antanna and with only 3 bands I would have missed all the great high band action. The KH1 would have covered it all well using the random or any other piece of wire I throw at it. But testing is the only way to know for sure. I don't want to hump to a summit and not know how my gear will function. Thomas does a lot of the testing for us. 🎉 TU Thomas

Instead of changing the paddle setting to "reverse", you could just hold the paddle upside down -- since you hold them in your hand.

Such an interesting device…I wonder why they chose to give it that nasally tone!?? I’d be squarely in the target market but just can’t deal with the sidetone.

An issue I started having with my KH1 was the dah paddle on the stock paddle getting stuck when I pull it out to flip it from stow to operate. It kind of gets lodged and I have to push the dah paddle so it clicks back into place before I can send dahs. Once back in place, no issue.

You should let Elecraft know about that. They'll take care of you. It should work as advertised!

Thomas, what cable are you using to connect your speaker to the radio? I checked out your BLOG on QRPer where you listed the speaker (which I have) but I didn't get or don't have that cable (I guess I could make on easily enough). Anyway, another awesome video...thanks for sharing. 73 KL7CA PS. CW Morse and makes those paddles now (N0SA) but they are currently out of stock.

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  8 місяців тому +1

Yes, the CW Morse/N0SA Paddle is the SP4. It's excellent.
The audio patch cable is one that's about 25 years old and came with a computer sound card. :) It does have two in-line chokes which I like. The important part if you buy one is to make sure it's shielded.

If you had a wireless mic you could keep narrating while away from the camera.
