  • Hello everyone, welcome to my new book review The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes.
This is not exactly a book review but more so, reflections of the themes that have resonated with me.
I know that it was published years ago but this is my second reading of this book.
Have you read this book? If so, what can you share about how you found it?
What stood out for you the most?
Did you see the twist in the book?
What's your favourite novel by Julian Barnes?

I just read this book and listened to your entire video. Sorry, but did not elaborate on the decision of Adrian to end his young life. Thank you 😊

Thank you for watching and sharing your comment. Sometimes (well many times), I deliberately leave out the big things that are spoilers because I’ve had comments that this annoys people. It’s also difficult to then share some thoughts without referring it in some way or just going around it. Personally I don’t mind spoilers especially if I see reviews after I’ve read the book which is usual practice for me - not before or through but everyone is different. That’s the reason why some things are missing from my videos.

Thank you for the feedback. It was very interesting to hear your point of view and reflections on the book.
I have read the book a month ago and I still think about it because i was very upset with the ending. I have read many theories and explanations online, watched some videos but I'm still missing something.
I loved reading the book, the flow of thought and how Tony reflected on himself and life. And how accurate your life can seem to your own eyes.
I am 29 year old and i feel I got that part, it did made me think about my onw life story and how I will reflect on it later on. But the ending was a huge disappointment because I couldn't understand some facts. I get that Tony has impacted Veronica way more than what we may have thought during the reading. Maybe she wasn't as mysterious (and mischievous?) as he thought. Maybe she just lacked communication skills (and still does) ?
    (Spoiler)
Do you think you could give me your thoughts on why Veronica's mother sent Tony money and Adrian's diary? And why Adrian (the son) would react to Tony's face ?
    Best wishes for 2024 :)

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts here. It’s always greatly appreciated when people take the time to watch and then share their own life lessons, experiences and reflections of the book.
I had a pretty straightforward approach to this book given that we know he had an affair, then he had a son with Veronica’s mother but it’s not clear why he suicided. At the same time, I was reading “The Only Story” by Julian Barnes which I would highly recommend too.
“Why would he suicide?” “Why was Veronica really narky with him?” were questions going through my mind.
However, in the Only Story, there was a twist. The theme of that book is to never assume that there’s an “only story” (our own assumption) and that there may have been underlying, unseen, unexpressed - people see the same situations in entirely different perspectives. The real truth is hidden.
For me my most reflective periods are times in my life where my gut tells me something is “NQR” (not quite right). Periods where I have a moment to sit and think about other people’s actions, mannerisms, eye movements, comments but at the same time, my own as a response to theirs. “Why did I say that?” “What’s behind me doing that?” “What could I have said?” Etc. Now in my 50s, where my family has aged, or my friends are taken ill with different ailments or even pass away, I feel I’m at my most reflective. Before that, life was simply too hectic with work, making a career, family, day to day.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. I recommend The Only Story by Julian Barnes too. All the best for 2024 and happy reading!

Julian Barnes and Anita Brookner are some of my favourite authors 🙂 I read Sense of an Ending many years ago and I do remember that it made a huge impression on me. You made me want to read it again. Thank you for an excellent video and a lovely channel. I’ll definitely follow some of your recommendations, as I can see that our tastes are very similar.
