The Defence of Cadiz against the English by Francisco de Zurbaran, formed part of the ambitious, decorative program for the Salón de Reinos of the Palacio del Buen Retiro. This naval battle scene depicts the successful Spanish defense of the Bay of Cadiz from attack of a joint English and Dutch fleet on November 1, 1625. The work stands out in Zurbaran's ouvre as a break away from his traditional themes of still-lifes and religious works.
