I was there in 1966 on USS Oklahoma City CLG-5 when I was just 17... we carried Com7thFleet on board. Then went over to USS Providence CLG-6 from 1967 to 1968 ... 3 years of war... that was how I grew up ... brings back many memories of the ships that I crossed paths with during those years.
Love the footage. Tin can sailor, on board the USS Ouellet DE-1077 from 1970 - 1974, home port, Pearl. Two WestPacs, 1972 & 1973, served in the Gulf of Tonkin, Yankee Station & The Firing Line.

I was on USS Walker DD 517,67-69, also 2 'cruises Westpac also home port Pearl.
I'm a card carrying member of the Gulf Of Tonkin Yacht Club. Earned that from serving on the USS James E. Kyes DD787, first saw VN coast line in 65, again in 66. Spent many a sleepless hours of rack time laying in my bunk listening to the ammo elevators working, and the dual 5" 38cal forward guns doin' their thing. My bunk was about 10' from the bulkhead that separated the sleeping compartment from the ammo handling devices. One slipup, and BOOM...
Came back for one more tour to the Tonkin Gulf in 68 on board USS Brooke DEG-1 but never saw gun line duty, and never got closer than about 10 miles or so from shore. Of the two ships I enjoyed the Kyes much more than I did the Brooke, even though the Brooke had better accommodations.
Funny thing happened in early 68, when N. Korea captured the USS Pueblo. I was aboard Brooke, and our relief from that freezing hell-hole off N. Korea was the Kyes! Funny how things work out. We (The Brooke) had just come from a couple days of nice warm weather in Hawaii when the Pueblo was captured. We were ordered to make haste and head to the Sea of Japan and patrol just off the coast of N. Korea.
We transited the Tsagaru Strait at night without running lights of any kind, unusual to say the least! It was pretty cool. Narrowest part is about 12 miles, plenty of rocks and reefs but we missed it all.
The coast off N.K. was cold and about 25*, & snowed quite a bit. I don't think we were there more than a week or so, if that, before Desron 32 (USS Kyes) relieved us. They were supposed to be on their way home, but got a change of orders. Good! Let them freeze!

Great short video. I served on USS Buck (DD761), 1966 to 1968. Westpac 1967-68, with time on North SAR off of Haiphong Harbor and then Yankee Station escorting a carrier. We were scheduled for gunfire support after that but were diverted to the Sea of Japan off of North Korea when the USS Pueblo was hijacked.

I also served on the Buck from '63 to '66.
I was on the USS Lloyd Thomas, DD764. During one day on the gun line. We started taking enemy fire. We took a couple of significant hits. We WERE sitting next the the New Jersey. When the enemy firing began, that damn ship turned around a left, leaving us sitting there taking the gun fire.

I served two tours in Vietnam on the destroyer USS Floyd B Parks DD-884. in. 72-73
Spent Xmas and New Years 67-68 Gun line. USS T.E.Chandler DD-717. Ceased fire for 6hrs Xmas and new years. I was Signalman SM2 & 50cal gunner on the SignalBridge.
Maddox was with us, DD-725, when we took 3 direct hits from NV shore batteries near Dong Hoi on 23/12/66. We passed the Operation Sea Dragon flag to her and sailed to Subic for repairs. In the general quarters segment of the video, I see that proper procedure is followed. Up and forward starboard. Thanks for posting.

+jerlan23 . I was there on the Maddox, when you guys got hit. At the time I was a BTFN. My GQ station was a 1st loader on the port 3"50 gun mount. Surprisingly I still remember going to GQ!
Never heard of what type, nationality, and cal. of either arty or shell that shore batteries NV used or even IF they had coast arty, as Ian Hogg states just lining up guns upon a beach does NOT make it coast artillery.

The Newport News was Des Moines class--the 8" guns on that class were fully automatic, so the video of that first 8" loading sequence must've come from a different ship, of the Baltimore class... Maybe the Saint Paul?
It was the USS ST PAUL which my brother served on. Thanks for the correction/clarification. I served on the USS Newport News.

@@Firespectrum122 If you mean serving aboard the USS Newport News then it was rough work as I was only an 18 year old Deck Seaman back then. In addition, she was the Flagship which meant 'Spit-and-Polish' daily. When asked I usually reply "That was where I went from Boy to Man" and I would not trade it for anything.
One of my General Quarters stations was turret 2 lower handling room passing powder bags up to the guns.

of it, but only a few quick clips.

I was on the Canberra 1966-1967. FG division.
Canberra = the only US ship names after a forgone city in honor of the HMAS Canberry whom went down at the battle of Savo Island.
I worked for a CTRCS who was on the Maddox during this incident. Thomas Dixon, from L.A.
I was on DDG-7 and spent some time in the Tonkin Gulf and most of the time on shore bombardment 1969-1970
A saw # 2 in this too. USS CANBERRA CAG 2 . I was on her at this time.

With all the video documentaries from the Vietnam War, we got very little exposure. And with little to no fanfare they were decommissioned and sold for scrap. We loved those boats, every last one of us.
My old tin can went to IRAN (OF ALL PLACES), and they probably paid for it with money we gave them.
Melvin, a lot of guys probably shaved with our boats. Or Japan built more surface warfare craft with the steel.
Which tin can was that, and what year was it sold to Iran?
It was my old ride "USS STORMES DD-780". Sold to Iran 10 Feb 1972. Renamed "Palang". They removed one 5 inch gun mount (why?) then took her on a world cruise to promote the country of Iran. At end of that cruise they scraped her. Hurt my feelings. I was the ships Yeoman 63-64.

Very nice video Melvin but the USS Newport News used semi fixed 8" rounds that loaded automatically, the video showed them putting powder bags behind a projectile. ETN 2 USS Newport News CA-148 68'- 69'

Yes, several viewers made me aware of that. I discovered (too late) that the footage in question was actually the USS ST. PAUL CA-73 (which coincidentally was my brothers ship). I served on the NNEWS CA-148 (Deck Force 1957). I apologize.
Melvin Douglas, no need to apologize Bro. I was just pointing it out. I am very proud of that ship and the power she projected 90 rounds in the air before the first one hit the ground.

I had just watched and enjoyed the USN film on the workings of the 8" 55 turret and am all so a fan of Tom Clancy's fictionalized description of a Newport News shore bombardment in "Without Remorse". Any how after all this about the guns ,then I saw those bags!

There is some BS here as the Newport News didn't use powder bags but brass semi fixed power cases.
That error was discovered and revealed in one of the early comments. That footage was determined to actually be the USS St. Paul CA-73 (in her early days). My fault and I apologize (again). Thank you for your alertness..

It was collecting intelligence on North Vietnam,but in International waters.
WAS on Maddox DD731 Oct '69 till July '70 -- then went WestPac on DD 703 - Wallace L Lind -- until discharge July'71 -- Plane guarded for USS America -- & gunline/Night fire only -- We got " Kill count " -- in chow line for breakfast --.Spent night in Hong Kong Jail w T Beatty & Moon Paulson .

Interesting to see the interior of the gun room at 4:00 during a firing mission. I was sitting next to the gun, on the left, as Pointer in the center gun of turret two. What a waste of millions of human lives. I haven't voted for a capitalist politician-Democrat or Republican- since 1968.
