    RECORDED ON JANUARY 4th 2024.
    Dr. Philip Ball is a freelance science writer, with a BA in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Physics from the University of Bristol. He was an editor at Nature for over 20 years. He is the author of many popular books on science, including The Book of Minds: How to Understand Ourselves and Other Beings, from Animals to AI to Aliens.
    In this episode, we focus on The Book of Minds. We start by discussing the solipsist position, what a mind is, the idea of the “space of possible minds”, and the relationship between the mind and the brain. We talk about human evolved psychology, the relationship between reason and emotion, and neurodiversity. We discuss how we think about the minds of other beings, whether we can know what it is like to be another animal, and whether plants might have minds. We also talk about the possible minds of AI systems, the value of imagining the minds of possible aliens, and how discussions surrounding free will inform how we think about the mind.

    1:14. Great five minute summary of the free Will argument.
    The best short comment I’ve heard on the subject

    37:30 what generates both personal identity and consciousness type one is self concept (emotions is part of the repository of self concept), personal identity is kind of simulation of self concept itself.
    Personal identity and consciousness type one are essential part of human mind.
    to make it easier to understand: emotions are part of you that when you wake up you apply reasoning (it’s possible to control your emotions through personal identity but they are essential part so mostly you reason based on your emotions most of the time).

    1:05:00 Octopus has no unified experience! Was he an octopus?!
    there’s something else they can’t comprehend.

    45:24 Conjoined twins! Each twin has its own brain stem, therefore it has its own self concept . Sharing the cerebral cortex means the possibility of sharing thoughts, but each as an independent being. The way in which personal identity is generated is a process that adapts to the state of the brain. For example, those who had half their brains removed (hemispherectomy) despite of that, their personal identity and consciousness type one is generated as much as possible (depending to the rest of the brain).

    57:00 plants share something with humans that has to do with so-called life (that’s all), but they have no mind the way they think!

    Have you considered talking to Forrest Landry? I'd love to hear him talk more about the Ontology/Axiology/Epistemology triad.

    Ethics, values and human principles are not a matter of luxury! They are basic human characteristics for the survival of the human race, and failure to realize this will mean the end of societies will be inevitable. It is only a matter of time, and science is part of those societies, and human values, morals, and principles play a pivotal role in protecting science.
    The destructive irrational meanness will destroy humans unless they recognise that pure constructive human intelligence is more powerful and far more effective than the destructive irrational meanness!

    Yeah, Hogan twins, it’s impossible to break human thoughts (one brainstem means one self concept), basically I am pretty sure for other reason that no one can challenge even after billions of years.

  • @aminam9201

    The mind they talk about needs high level of consciousness type one, it’s possible to say that some other irrational animals have low level of mind but plants are different case (I know what they mean by mind)! They noticed some plants reaction, communicating with each other, seems similar to conscious human intelligence but that’s not the case !

    It’s possible to create life on other planet different from conditions of creating like on planet earth.

    58:30 integrated information! But they even can’t differentiate between data and information!
    plants do communicate with each other, humans do that too unknowingly!
    But that has nothing to do with mind !

    58:50 It’s not possible to compare plants with machines (for more complicated than conventional reactions), plants, bacteria,…etc show kind of intelligence for other reasons. It’s possible to say that viruses are machines but they can’t apply that to plants.
    there’s something else completely different (something that has to do with so-called life itself).

    Hi aminam. Could you describe more of your view of how time is a process? How would you define the word "process"? Given that there's other types of processes which don't work the same way time seems to

  • @aminam9201
    @aminam9201 4 місяці тому

    28:00 that’s incorrect, peacock tail issue is similar to what connects plants (communication), it’s not mind but something else. That has nothing to do with so-called sexual selection,….etc
    It has a purpose but behind it is not so called natural selection (evolution is a symptom of life not life itself).

  • @aminam9201

    Why did they hide this purposely! It’s mine (my own thoughts) but I can’t see it too:
    process means how does clocks work and the role of humans in that process . do you know why humans can get the time from that equation (Time =distance / velocity) because clocks too work based on that equation too. (I mean time is the result of a process of motion), try to think about motion and its relationship with the above mentioned equation, of course there’s force,…etc but just focus on that equation. (Time is not just a specific thing you get directly but you get it through a process)
    for instance, the movement of the seconds hand, the minutes hand, the hours hand, I think it’s better to check all the comments I have posted, it’s hard to explain that in one comment. check how human brain calculate time too.

    His strategy is to stand in the middle, but such strategy doesn’t work in science! It does work in everyday life but not in science! But in general he doesn’t have his own genuine thoughts (nothing new at all).

  • @aminam9201
    @aminam9201 4 місяці тому

    1:00:00 Evolution is a feature of life, not life itself! Therefore, evolution is not what led to the emergence of life (that belief is completely wrong).

  • @aminam9201
    @aminam9201 4 місяці тому

    there’s nothing new ! as if he is afraid of something! he uses patchwork techniques carefully too, . to concise: he wants to say let’s not to hurry, we can maintain our imaginary world (the shaky tower ) gradually along the road. Something fits our mental capacity! there’s nothing new!
