  • The cherry blossoms along the Sumida River were planted by the order of the 4th Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna during the Edo period, and later, the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune added 100 more cherry trees, as records show. Currently, there are approximately 300 cherry trees on the Sumida Ward side and about 600 on the Taito Ward side. Stretching along both banks of the Sumida River for about 1 kilometer, visitors can enjoy a collaboration between the cherry blossoms and the Tokyo Skytree. At night, the cherry trees along the Sumida River Walk and those within Sumida Park are illuminated, creating a fantastical atmosphere. Due to delayed cherry blossom blooming this year, the illumination period for the Sumida Cherry Blossom Festival has been extended, and it will be held from March 17th to April 14th, 2024.
