GB News | Lawyer comments on preacher arrest for critiquing Islam

- The High Court has rejected the appeal of a Christian preacher who was arrested outside Southwark Cathedral for displaying placards which protested Islam in the wake of the London Bridge, Westminster, and Manchester Arena terrorist attacks.
Ian Sleeper, 58, was arrested outside Southwark Cathedral on 23 June 2017 under controversial section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 for causing “harassment, alarm and distress”, for displaying a sign which read: “Love Muslims, Hate Islam, Jesus is love and hope.”
In a concerning judgment for free speech, the High Court confirmed that the arrest was lawful: in his ruling the Judge rejected the idea, often expressed by Christians, that you can ‘hate the sin but love the sinner.’
The Christian Legal Centre's Michael Phillips appeared om GB News on 29 January 2025 to discuss the case.

Compare this with the placards displayed almost every Saturday in the capital. Shame on this nation and it’s police.
People have been arrested for holding placards pro Palestine marches. The notion that there is two tier justice is for the birds
It's not the nation its the left wing government and their deranged activities.
Exactly
we are all dead , we just dont know when but its only a matter of time
Can't love muslims have to be very weary of them
But Palestine marchers are allowed to display hate placards and terrorist flags.
No such thing as two tier policing. Right?😏
Labour voters?
Sounds like you didn't like it when that happened?
In Scotland they have been deemed illegal...but they still march spouting anti west pish
@@mm3nrxlike what?
So, if a man held up a placard saying love Christians hate Christianity he would be arrested? Dream on.
If someone deems it offensive yeah.
Remember our human rights now have a clause.
I have the right to live free from fear or the threat of fear.
If call the police and say I'm fearful to go outside cos the March is anti ??? And I'm fearful of potential violence.
The police have try and ensure my right to live free from fear is executed.
Which is why they are doing their upmost to stop the marches.
Cos alot of people are using them to suppress free speech and the right to protest.
If I protest without any placard, I am less likely to be arrested why?
Cos my being at the march is open to interpretation more.
You are not exactly sure what my views are.
I'm not holding up a placard saying exactly where I stand. As we know extremism is a huge sliding scale.
The protest are also getting expensive to police, a public Bill which has to be paid.
The marches would not be happening if our governments were less complicit in supporting the middle east massacre.
89% ofuk population want UK government to cease to support the Israeli apartheid regime.
That's a huge majority of the UK.
Yet the government isn't listening.
The protests are their way of trying to get through to them.
89% polled said the atrocities were too much.
@Beherenow473 No apartheid except for the one imposed by extremist Islam. 2 million Arabs live and work and vote in Israel. Show me the apartheid aside from the self imposed seWis side bombers..
2 tier policing is obvious
I am so sick of this crap 😡
2 Tier Policing !
Home Office will classify you as Faaar Right for that.
WanKier policing!
13 hours custody for simply holding an opinion is quite clearly unlawful detention by any measure. The law once again is an ass.
Where are the police when real crimes are being committed? This is ridiculous! What about the weekly Saturday marches (pro Hamas/ Palestine) with their hate filled banners! Section 5!? Does it not apply here?
The police have their hands full with helping to eradicate the "scourge" of a religion that exhorts us to love our neighbours.
They have government support.
At home watching Netflix, whilst scouring the Internet for hurty words, or any critisism of Starmer.
Obviously not.
What happened to the usual suspects threatening a teacher for mentioning the peaceful religion in Yorkshire
When the police force is ruled by a certain mayor we can expect more of this division.
All those police officers for one person no wonder crime is not being investigated
Why should Islam be exempt from criticism? I’ll critique it as much as I like thank you. There’s much to criticise!
A UA-cam protected class.
and now they deny 2 tier country (liar liar liar pants on fire) Palestinians in UK insult me daily
Protected group. Full stop.
But it's in London, controlled by Khan.
The very fact that Islam should not be critiqued, is a firm sign that it lies on flimsy foundations, weak reasoning and a really fragile set of premises.
Of course people should examine and ask questions about it - it is the way to learn. However, those at the head of this belief system are solid in their refusal to accept any query or curious comment from anyone, within or outside their following.
It is not robust enough to give an adequate response to most questions. In contrast, Christianity encourages examination and interrogation. Why? Because, for every question, there is a solid and logical answer.
Just another nail in the coffin for the police's reputation.
And the government and the public and the country and civilization.
And Christianity
The police have no credibility.
What reputation, they lost that back in the 90s.
And the Judiciary.
We've seen crowds of muslims blocking roads while praying, which i find extremely offensive as i believe they worship evil, yet we are supposed to put up with that show of ego fuelled procrastination and not say anything.
I pray God saves their souls and gives us strength to stand up to whats going on ❤
Causing traffic violation put them all in prison
They worship a god that says that women aren't humans, but an animal, placed for men's sole use.
Correct! It seems have e fight on our hands.
@@Mylostsock11 worship Baal
I am not sure I would stop
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Who's training them? If they are unaware of when to arrest and whether to not do so. It's staggering that it keeps happening.
Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world. Hallelujah!
So hating a theory is now an arrestable offence in Britain, fantastic!
Hypocritical government!
Outrageous!
Not so much hypocritical - more Godless and allahful.
No free speech in the uk.🥵
The second part of his sign is 100% correct.
What a ridiculous decision, this chap should have won his case!!
Praying for the persecuted church.
Tough times are coming
Where are the police when the nazis are shouting antisemitism vile?
Police protect them
@@joeblogs-vx4ep True
They weren’t in parliament that day😂
Are these Nazis in the room with us now?
back in 1940s? who knows bro. modern day versions go under a different banner :^)
This is persecution. Can he appeal? Two tier?
Please appeal, Ian Sleeper!
The purpose of the police is to guarantee free expression, not to intervene in the dialogue and become thought police. This is unacceptable.
The more degree-qualified officers that entered the Police, the lower the quality became and collective IQ dropped. When us old-timers retired, we did so with a combination of relief, and embarrassment at what it had become.
love and donate to Christian Concern
This guy absolutely was unlawfully detained.
I have lost faith in the police and the justice system
Who was sitting in the court that ruled this
What an ABSOLUTE disgrace❗️This is persecution❗️
FREEDOM OF SPEECH❗️
A place with free speech means you have no right to not be offended.
Two tier justice. It does exist. And no Home Office report can suggest otherwise.
I would like to think that our fine police officers treat all of use as equal. Unfortunately the mayor of London seems to have a strangle hold on the police, and common sense appears to have evaporated. This is the beginning of the fall of democracy.
That is how it appears, unfortunately… and he has just been knighted!
“Arise, Sir Khan- do something useful, and sort this out “.
@@RICHARDGUYROBERTSSir Creep more like !!!
The irony is they have given more reason to criticise Islam. Had they just ignored it, nobody would have been the wiser.
To hate a religion is not a crime. If you need laws to stop your religion from being scrutinised, how much faith do you have in it.
Thats was my point as well.
Thanks for defending free speech. Good luck
Welcome to North Korea, UK version.
This is a very sinister affair. There's a two tiered justice system in this country. Bad things are coming.
This country, along with its police force, is a disgrace to human kind!
Two Tier (again)
They are literally now the Islamic protection force disgusting
I'm surprised that the police and the CPS don't know about the amendment to the Race and Religious Hatred Act 2006 which protects free speech in that area:-
Yes but melism mayors tend to ignore certain laws
What the hell happened to GB? They’ve become a shameful joke.
Section 5 of the Public Order Act does not distinguish between a legitimate expression of an opinion and language designed to promote hate or violence. The act should be rewritten to clarify this, and police officers should receive better training on the application.
Sadly, many Acts are drawn up in terms that can be misused for political purposes.
"Section 5 of the Public Order Act does not distinguish between a legitimate expression of an opinion and language designed to promote hate or violence" - that's the entire point off such badly defined "laws"...
From the river to the sea etc is very clearly designed to promote violence .
This is clearly a case of wrongful arrest. If you love Muslims , but hate their religion-so what? In many ways Islam shows itself to be a violent ideology,: worthy and deserving of such criticism!
What about legitimate & justified hate?

of course the police will not arrest that person she is talking about.
She clearly didn't follow these protests properly, because she would have seen videos where the police is saying, we cannot arrest that person because there are too many of them.
There was reason why the police was never in riot gear.
"The UK could become the second truly Islamist country (after Pakistan), that will get a nuclear weapon under the Labour party."
JD Vance, July 2024
I have been offended multiple times by Keir starmer, I bet he hasn't been arrested once.
Can he appeal? He ought to.
Human Rights violation , FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION/ SPEECH WITHOUT FEAR OR PREDJUDICE !
The process, as they say, is the punishment.
A women who had a car sign with a swear word on it was arrested, we are now arresting people for funny bumper signs.
We're f**ked ... thr replacement continues apace
Thank you, that's all we have time for, just as it got interesting, making the comparisons to expose the two tier policing and judiciary.
The one with the funny helmet is a cycling policeman - its part of the net zero thing
This a Christian country!!
/was
Would a Christian country be supporting what is happening in the middle east ?
Please revise your thinking in the light of the evidence, excessive use of exclamation marks and the need to over emphasise are more revealing than your choice of words.
Atheist support Christians and Jews
Based on Christian principles.
The further a society drifts away from the truth the more it will hate those that speak it. George Orwell.
So in this case I find the police's actions quite offensive, its very distressing, so do the police get arrested for upsetting me! Of course not. The idea is ridiculous!
Disgraceful
So them being distressed by being called out for what they do is the problem but not constant practicing of jihad on European countries or the house of war as they call it?
The government needs to go. The police need to go.
You have just explained 2 tier
not a chance of arresting protestors in Starmers 2 tier britain
The question here is Was the arrest lawful?, not whether he should be allowed to display the placard. Sec 5 of the POA includes displaying a sign that may cause harassment alarm or distress. It may be that the sign was considered offensive and a complaint made, therefore the refusal to cease displaying it gave the officer grounds to arrest. The fact he was held for 13hrs is a failure of the legal aid/duty solicitor scheme not the Police.
The more pertinent question should be, Why are those displaying anti semetic placards at the PP rallies not all arrested. The answer to that is obvious and answering it with the words Two Tier Policing makes me a RWE.
The sign held may have caused distress to someone who was Islamic. So what? It did not explicitly incite violence.
An opinion was expressed, and
no crime was committed at all!
Mr Lynch had a sign 🥇🙈🙊⚖️🆘🇬🇧
If course it is
If he had held up a sign saying, love christians, hate christianity, he wouldnt have even been spoken to. For some reason unknown to me,Islam is not to be criticised!
Everyone should be free to voice their opinions or concerns and about all religions.
Section 29J of the Public Order Act states "Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system."
Something was done that restricted an ‘antipathy ‘ and ‘dislike’…
Ian Sleeper was wrongfully arrested and detained.
Shows how woke and two teir our police unfortunately are now they don't arrest Muslims with signs that actually have hate on them
So the cops told him that legislation overrode human rights. In Scotland the Scotland Act makes legislation is subject to human rights law. Furthermore, the Charter of Paris (1990) to which the UK is Party states that - "the first duty of government is the promotion and protection of human rights." While Scotland is compelled by law to comply with this😉 England is in breach of human rights law that they signed up to.
COMMON LAW ALLOWS US TO HAVE FREE EXPRESSION, SUE THE COPS INVOLVED FOR DENYING THIS FREEDOM.
Is wokeness/two-tier policing a result of funding/infiltration by vested interests? Is the Labour Party an example?
You can criticise Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Atheism, and the list goes on. And nothing.
But criticise Islam, and you get labelled far right. Why?
Plod don't have much up top these days.
Ffs 😢
Where was the police when children needed them, see in Wigan the council walked out when it was time to debate the raping gangs

You can only insult a religion, that isnt one.
Islam is not a religion it is a creed.
The process is the punishment
geeeeeez , Public Order Act 1996
Section 5 is in 2 parts /2 elements BOTH elements HAVE to be met
but very often a PC will abuse (for his own detriment) only use the 👉🏻 "secondary" of the offence = harassment , alarm & distress BUT it begins with :
Primary , which it begins with a 👉🏻"threat " also
here the kicker :-
PO Act ,, Section 5 (4) arrest without warrant is """repealed 1/1/2006 as it is NOT criminal offence , it summary offence = a fine only
providing that the primary of the offence can be proved = "threatening" in a PC presence ,,,
every PC knows it's NOT criminal offence ,, yet still abuse s. 5 PO Act ,, only using the secondary element ONLY
to then get you to agree to behavior order pay £100 or
tell face court (magistrate) as it could cost £1000 , that is abuse by oppression of Crown servant
PACE 1984
section 76 (8) inhuman or degrading treatment, force a person to choose the cheaper route ,
as person must pay £££ for his own defence , not criminal offence ,, fine only ,,, yet arrested on summary offence not yet paid the fine 🤷♂
how is that equal ,,
never ever trust a PC ,,no matter how much they may smile ,,
Absolutely disgraceful
How stupid is the powers to be
Two-tier judicial system too!
SACK THE COPPER
I'd like to read that judgment as he was obviously unlawfully detained and exercising his freedom of speech and expression, which are Lawful
No crime committed
No charges
u.k. is lost
A message from gods knights, just look at the now situations in Sweden, this is now coming to the EU and UK! You reap what you sow! Yes keep laughing!!!! Sweden did the same, but they are not laughing now.
Islam and tolerance: Two words that should never be used in the same system.
Dystopian
Khans Gestapo strikes again, is it any wonder the Police , especially the Met are held in such contempt by the public! If I was a copper in London I'd be deeply embarrassed, even ashamed to put on the uniform!
When will our politicians realise they are not part of their plan!.
We. Should all get a copy of the Koran and read what it says. You’ll be surprised.
What was the case name?
If offended you can cite this case law as grounds for removal of the sign or arrest if necessary. Surely?
Words - not abusive, not threatening
Behavior - not abusive, threatening or disorderly.
Thus the offence is not made out.
Met Police : STOP PROTECTING THE ENEMY
In cases like this there has to be common sense and proportionality surely. If one person only objects it is ridiculous that someone is arrested on that one person's word. The police should tell that person in more diplomatic language than mine to p-ss off, grow up and get a life.
What if something a police officer does something that offends someone?
