I like to carve my faces with a mirror in front of me. I’ll try to mimic the face I’m carving to see where the facial lines typically happen and go from there. It’s worked well for me.
I’ve also learned from carving off the corner that the face is much narrower than 90 degrees. It great for setting your eyes and nose, but you really need to take a lot back when doing the sides of the head, otherwise you get a monkeyman for a face

All true. But faces are all so different, from wide faces to narrow, long faces to short. Essentially, to carve a lot of faces, a carver has to study faces and be open to seeing the differences between them. It helps to study faces, wherever you go. Thanks for watching.

@@ericowens6369 very true. I can’t stop seeing the shapes of people’s faces when I look at them.

@@Bomtombadi1 Me, too. I saw a fellow in a sandwich shop the other day and he was a walking caricature character. Hunched over, bib overalls, flannel shirt, long beard and old hat that has seen some days. I carry images like that in my head all the time and enjoy seeing them. Someday I hope to have the time to take them out and give them life. I wish I had the time to have a conversation with those kinds if character. Their stories would give my carvings of them a little more life. Thanks for watching!

Excellent tutorial. What type of wood is/are best for carving?

For me, creating caricature figures mostly, I prefer basswood, also called lime wood, from the linden tree. I is soft enough to carve by hand with palm tools. It holds detail well, can be painted or stained or left natural, It is a good wood for lots of uses. Thanks for watching.

That was a wonderful face an incredible expression in eyes. I'm speaking especially off the sad n e s s caricature you made.. I have a question, do you ever do any power carving with dremel excetera? I looked at your UA-cam homepage and did not find any. Thank you , and Best wishes.

I occasionally do a little power carving with one of the dremels I have. But not very often and not very much. Thanks for looking at my videos. And thank you for the compliments.
