  • Narrated by Glenn Ford, this 1960s film about the U.S. Coast Guard begins with a brief history of the service, and then shows the mission of the Coast Guard as it existed in the 1960s, featuring its aircraft and ships. At 1:47, there are images of ships in distress and even an ocean liner on fire and sinking. Coast Guard search and rescue is shown, with modern cutters on duty around the clock. A water craft rescue is seen at the 3:15 mark, answering 50K calls each year. Coast Guard buoys are shown at the 5:10 mark, marking rivers and harbors, and lighthouses are seen at the 5:20 mark. LORAN systems are seen at the 5:40 mark, and the Coast Guard Ice Patrol is seen at the 6:00 mark. At 6:20, Coast Guard ice breaker 278 is seen in the arctic. This is USCGC Staten Island. Coast Guard inspectors are seen at the 7:30 mark, inspecting boats and promoting boating safety. Military capabilities of the Coast Guard are seen at the 9:15 mark, with the coast guardsmen ready to fight alongside the Navy in the event of war.
USCGC Staten Island (WAGB-278) was a United States Coast Guard Wind-class icebreaker. Laid down on 9 June 1942 and launched on 28 December 1942, the ship was commissioned on 26 February 1944, and almost immediately afterward transferred to the Soviet Union, under the Lend Lease program, under the name Severny Veter, which loosely translates as Northwind, until 19 December 1951. When returned to the United States Navy, she was designated USS Northwind until 15 April 1952, when she was renamed Staten Island to distinguish her from her successor USCGC Northwind (WAGB-282) which had been laid down shortly after she was lent to the Soviet Union. The ship was transferred to the US Coast Guard as USCGC Staten Island in February 1965, and served until November 1974, before being scrapped.

I first saw this film in the Coast Guard Recruiting Office Detroit, in 1971. It had me hooked - and I'm proud to have served 30 years with the finest military service in the United States! SEMPER PARATUS!

And I believe that there are only about 1 million Coast Guard veterans, roughly 0.33% of Americans.

Interesting to see as this was pertinent to my time. 1969-1973 I was a radarman on WHEC 44 Wachusett out of Seattle and I recognized the old CIC immediately. No computers in those days...we did everything by hand with a grease pen and ruler. Brought back a lot of good memories...thanks for posting.

I loved seeing this film, as it depicts the Coast Guard pretty much as it was when I first joined in 1975; not much had changed except the uniforms in the years between this film and my trip to boot camp. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy this film, I was surprised and gratified to see my very first unit out of basic training, USCGC Point Spencer (WPB 82349) in a beautiful running "trophy" shot at 10:00!

In the written narration of this film, is the first time I ever heard of a Lend-lease item being returned... and from the Soviets of all countries!! Of course, you notice it didn't last long after we got her back. How predictable!
But I did enjoy the video. Thanks!

I served on the USCGC Staten Island (1972-1974) which was originally commissioned as the Northwind and given to Russia as part of the Lend-Lease. It was "returned" to the Navy in 1957 and given to the Coast Guard around 1967. She was decommissioned in 1975 I believe.

Nice to see those 44 footers. You used to see them at Group Cape May, NJ back then.

RIP Charlie Bucko and Doug Munro. A real honest to goodness unexpected squall/blow and multiple overturned maydays with men in the water will get your adrenaline pumping friend. I dont care if you are on radio watch trying to single handed respond to multiple calls at once or getting underway in a 41 footer heading out the breakwater throttled up with both 904 turbos screaming "balls to the wall" to be greeted by and slamming through 21 foot waves. As you rock back and forth from the cabin ceiling hand rails and some are puking you gonna think - boot camp is a walk in the park by comparison.
