Great talk. I’ve always been partial to 7MM bullets since I killed my first mulie buck, pronghorn buck and cow elk using my uncle’s 280 Rem shooting 140 partitions. When it came time to buy my first rifle, I wanted a model 700 in 280 Remington with a 24” barrel. However, I was only able to find rifles with a 22” barrel. Since my uncle had a model 700 in 7MM Rem Mag, as well as all of the components to reload for the cartridge, I bought a 700 in this cartridge instead. The rifle consistently shot 3/4” groups with a 160 partitions at 2965 fps and I used it on everything from pronghorn bucks to bull elk with great success. I have extensively used the cartridge ever since. I inherited my uncle’s 280 Remington a few years ago and I have used it with great success as well. Seven millimeter bullets truly do provide a great option on non dangerous game.
7mm Rem Mag is a very versatile cartridge, capable of shooting light bullets giving a very flat trajectory and when combined with rapid expansion bullets are very fine option for deer hunting, and also the trendy heavy for caliber bullets that may be used for heavier game and a fine option for shooting at extended ranges. A second chapter on the 7mm Rem Mag should be done explaining Remington's different offerings for the cartridge and the practical application for each load. A podcast talking about ultra mags would be interesting too.
Good podcast guys. When I look on Remarms website I don’t see any of the guns being chambered in the Ultra Mag cartridges like 7mm ultra mag, 300 Ultra Mag etc. Do a podcast and talk about any plans for the future and and if there are any plans to chamber some of the rifles in the Ultra Mag cartridges.
The 7mm mag is great , freaking powerhouse, the only complaint I have is barrel life , wish I could get around 400 more rounds per barrel,, freaking awesome 1000yd rifle.
I would like a Rifle in the .280 Rem. In the Remington 700 Classic with 26 inch barrel ! What’s my favorite Remington Cartridge 6mm Rem I reload for it and it is awesome.
I used a 7Remmie about 25yrs ago and my only complaint was that it wasted too much meat. So I’ve been using a 7x57 for a number of years now and it doesn’t chew through as much of the venison; deer don’t know the difference, dead is dead, but there’s more meat in the freezer!
In 1975 i bought a used, beat up, Rem 700 ADL in 7mm Rem Mag. I wasn't a very good shooter so that rifle spun my head around. I used that rifle to hunt mule deer, white trail deer amd antelope. I had to put it aside around 1980 to finish college, get married, start a career, and have kids.
You should have talked about 7mm rem mags with faster twist bbls and heavy for caliber bullets. I mean after all remington is now making the rem 700 in the 7mm rem mag with a 1-8 twist bbl . So is browning . That is the future of the 7mm rem mag. It has to compete with the modern cartridges or it will fade away. You also need to start loading heavy for caliber high bc bullets.
The Rem mag with its traditional twist rate of 9 or 91/2 is just fine and handles a much wider range of bullet weights than do fast twist rate barrels. The 1:8 barrels do not handle the shorter lighter bullets well at all. Don’t mess with the 7 mag. it’s a great cartridge plus longer high BC bullets are horrible at ranges that 90+ percent of game is shot. There’s a reason that it’s remained so popular for 60+ years.
Remington is gonna have to pick up the pace with modern cartridges guys, hunting and tags are harder to get every year and shooting sports is going precision and long range. I hope you all pick up on this, for instance I'm a native nevadan and this is my fifth year without drawing a deer tag. Many people are shooting competition or steel now days.
I respectively disagree that the 7rem mag put the 7mm on the Map here in the USA. The 7x57 was popular old sporters n surplus n even rebilds. Was popular enough that Ruger sold a good many with there 77..as Did Remington n Winchester when they got off there high horse n the 80s. To heck with 7rem mag.. Now the WSM n Rem Ultra Mag.
I would lie some numbers to back up your statement. Ryan from the vortex podcast said the same thing. Maybe the 7x57 had a short time of relevance in the U.S. but we were not very accepting of rifle metric cartridges during or between the world was. In fact the 7x57 was changed to the 275 rigby in britan. And I’m pretty sure the 257 roberts was more popular than the 7x57 in the USA.
Would have been good to have the 7mm SAUM on the table as well. Maybe even a 7mm-08 and 280 Remingtons for comparison.

Great pod cast - ideal format that's informational.
love the 7mm mag
We need a podcast on the 7mm-08
The real question is why did Remington down load the 7mm Mag so much?

With the 6.5 being popular you'd think Remington would push the 7-08 more
I always shot 300 win mag. Just went to 7mm REM Mag this year. Wished i had own one years ago. Recoil is far less.
Why doesn't Remington make 5.56 ammo? If you can make .223, you can make 5.56.
