The rise of the cassette was impacted immensely by the release of the Sony Walkman in the early 80s, which, for the first time, allowed you to take your music with you anywhere you went, much like phones today.
This was the first true portable medium that allowed you to create your own mixtapes, record tunes from the radio or purchase your favorites from the record store, and then stuff a few in your pockets, ready to enjoy on your Walkman, in the car, on a ghetto blaster or at a friend's party. I still have my 1987 King Tubby meets Rockers Uptown cassette, which I carried everywhere and forced anyone within listening distance to hear.
