The Celtic version of a shaman is the druid, and that takes many years to train for. There is just a neutral adherence to nature and knowledge. That is so refreshing in a way. If one put Temur in a DND alignment chart, it would likely go in true neutral or chaotic neutral. It is like Temur but drop the intelligence of blue. These kind of people live in the wilderness. They live in nature and they are free. They live like wild animals, and they can even shapeshift to animals. Wild people can form romantic bonds with humans living on the outskirts of settlements. They are very loving and affectionate. There is also a primal desire for a romantic partner. The wild people are pretty fun to imagine. They fit the red and green of Gruul perfectly. That is pretty cool. Wild is a good word to describe the color pair. It usually means something that is energetic and hard to control. That is red. Sometimes it is used to describe animals and environments to mean something in nature. That is green. All MTG color pairs have multiple manifestations across many different planes. The ones that most closely resemble my idea of wild people would be the werewolves of Innistrad and sayters of Theros. They really get into the human and animal mix thing. Werewolves are a bit closer due to the shapeshifting. Werewolves are even my favorite horror monster. Turning into a wolf would be cool if it didn't have a bad reputation. Now that I think of it, Innistad does tone down the creepy aspect by not making werewolves black. That is refreshing in a way. That plane is full of horror monsters. Vampires are Rakdos, and zombies are Dimir. Those are the two black monsters. One thing both have in common is that they are dead bodies that have become undead. That does make them fit really close to the whole graveyard theme and mechanics of black. One thing that werewolves and vampires have in common is a powerful hunger and an impulse to attacks and bite. That is like the shared color of red. Gruul isn't the most relatable color pair. However it definitely has its appeal. It can play its part in the vivid diversity that is the color combos.
Even when divorced from the idea of living out in the wild, Gruul speaks of true authenticity, of not only being at peace with who and what you are, but celebrating it. In a world that constantly tells you that you're lacking, that your ideal self is always in the horizon, it's a welcome and cathartic relief to hear: "You're not just good enough. You're already everything you need to be."
Gallia is my favourite MTG card ever! I have several decks with her, including a Satyr-themed Commander. No matter, I win or loose, seeing her on the board makes me happy!
Out of all the Guilds, I am Gruul. There is no doubt in my Heart and Gut (Which is what guides my path). I hate the world man has made. These social rules, societal expectations, laws, structures and Even comforts that hold me back and make life more complex and what it needs to be. I hate how it can make me feel weak at times. I also think man doesn't realize civilization is just following nature in a twisted way they don't even realize it. We are all animals deep within. I am most happy though being Free and away from the Internet, away from people and out in nature where I am self reliant. Nothing beats this feeling looking at the stars at night around a fire with good food, drink and good company who appreciate it with you. I also love going to old buildings people have forgotten about and seeing how nature reclaims what is hers. It's beautiful. I admire the strength of beasts and the fortitude of nature and i grow this within myself. One day, I'll give up everything in this world of man after I'm done with it and live off nothing but myself. I will die like this and return this vessel back to mother earth hopefully in a condition to let her know I appreciated what she gave me. If this doesn't make me Gruul, I don't know what does lol
Glad I’m not alone, a societal prison only works for those who love it or fear what’s outside of it. For us it’s a cage, we hear the call and our hearts long for it. I’ll see you out there.
As a rakdos I see society as something that holds me back as well. But I'd be lying if I say I don't like taking advantage of some things it made possible. For me ut is what it is, I take advantage of what I can, discard what I can not, allow myself to be a hypocrite when fit, living life one step at time. Not that different from each other but at the same time completly different.
I'll tell you what DOESN'T make you Gruul: typing 100+ words explaining all the ways you're Gruul. Now let's see who this faker really is! *rips off mask* Le gasp! It was Temur the whole time!
You always pick the right color combo at the right time for the character i'm playing in my campaign. It was Naya two years ago. Izzet last year. Now Gruul.
I’m not a MTG fan, but the Bloomburrow set somehow got on my radar and the artwork completely charmed me. I’ve been reading a bit about Magic since then and the color pie interested me- it’s always fun to read about personality types and think about how you & your loved ones fit into them. So I took the color alignment quiz after reading about each color and got exactly what I thought I would: Red/Green. I don’t 100% align with this explanation of “Gruul”, but I highly value authenticity, love, and nature and absolutely get disturbed by the complexities of the modern world, lol. Nice video!
my theme is jeksai(red white and blue) 4 savannah lions 4 ragavan, nimble pilferer 4 stoneforge mystic 4 batterskull 4 lightning helix 4 inspired ultimatum 4 mass manipulation 4 evangelize 2 memnarch 2 guile, sonic soldier 24 lands the deck is divided between half deck is best aggro spells and half of deck is best late game comeback spells. so i put my opponent on defense early and then late game power through the powerful late game spells.
Great video like always! While I don’t identify with Gruul, I am quite a fan. Being Gruul seems almost as relaxing and freeing as being Rakdos. But alas, red mana definitely is not my fate… 😅
I have several friends who have both red and green mana within them, and relaxing & dependable is how I would describe them. They are some of the best friends I've made, and with them I've cultivated a great community of people who are hearty and filled with passion. In another time, they would be wild and free savages, living life to it's fullest
I'm definitely rooted deeply in red and green. I'm a huge fan of the relaxed, content side of Gruul that isn't shown much since a lot of Gruul is big smash. I like the Gruul that just wants to be, to enjoy their existence and celebrate with others, and accept that you are who you are and that it's a beautiful thing to be you ♡
From being aligned with the Izzet colors as a teenager, I think I grew into a more Temur-shaped mind if not totally Gruul. I can see in myself some blue aspects but I know now green is more prevalent than blue.
After watching this, and rewatching your Naya video- I think that the quiz was wrong to remove white from my identity. I mean, I relate to a very heavy amount to the feelings this video portrays (which is why I do believe Gruul is the highest part of my identity), but white plays a very heavy role in my beliefs and actions. Very good video though- great timing to help me figure out how I feel about my last color pie quiz result.
This may be telling you something important : What are you allowing to influence and change you to view yourself in a light you yourself do not agree with? Take some time and look at those results, and ask yourself this : Who do you want to be, and why aren't you that person?
Great video Dice! This is a perfect reflection of this philosophy, and I couldn't imagine doing any better with it. Thank you so much for the work you do, bringing us your thoughts and discoveries into the color pie and all it entails!
My my, this video was such a positive surprise - I came here expecting comparisons with the iconoclasts of the Catholic Church Reformation or perhaps the Celtic warrior still furiously charging full force at their enemies centuries after the Romans introduced the shield wall as the superior battle tactic. Instead, the Gruul narrative here aligns way more with my most spiritual peers ('as they comprehend they're an integral part of a larger cosmic dance" - sounds just like Alan Watts), or - better even - all of my friends who either talk about, or effectively moved to an eco-village and are now exploring new life themes life harvesting their own food. This is such a sweet view on Gruul - and one that I deeply appreciate. This whole video made me think of how different the Magic the Gathering universe could be if only the main game was not about violence. What if Magic was a game about building magic societies? What if it was about making magic art? I think we'd see the beauty of Gruul quite often - rather than its rage. Amazing video as always :)
Even though I prefer Rakdos and Izzet, the deck I've been playing recently is Chishiro with a heavy counter focus. And so far, I've been extremely satisfied. The deck builds up very quickly.
Something I'm interested in is seeing what each color and color combination looks like as a villain. We all know what the variations of black look like, but what makes a Green White character evil or what leads a White Blue Red villain to make the actions they do?
Evil green/red is the belief that there is a correct, natural order of things (Green) and the willingness to lash out so others adhere to it (Red). It's the Gruul Clan philosophy without moderation. It's Klothys' mandate on fate. It's thinking you're right and not resting until everyone else knows it. On a similar note lot of people treat Black/Red like the colors of facism, but that's only because of real-world association. Mandatory conformity to tradition, the culling of the other, and military might making right? That's not black red. That's green white
@DiceTry I would agree that expanding on your previous venture into evil, you dove into the different sides of white, showing how both Elspeth and the White Preator are both true representations of White mana. Returning to how evil looks within the color pie, and how it changes when it joins up with multiple colors is something that would be intresting to discover
gruul is definitely one of my favorites. my gruul deck: 4 praetors council 4 fireball 4 fanning the flames 4 crackle with power 2 creeping corrosion 2 shatterstorm 4 orcish settlers 4 overgrown battlement 4 wall of roots 4 axebane guardian 24 lands
This was a nice video! I defintley understand where Gruul is coming from, but I feel it is too oblivious to vatious possibilites! Both in terms of community and groups, as well as that of ambitous growth! I also want to that Fangbone from the show uh... Fangbone, is a great example of a Red/Green Hero. I enjoyed this video a lot.
So, I think I have a great Gruul dnd character. There is a lot of details and story but I will give a basic run down of the primary things I want to draw attention too. 1: He refuses to let others fight his battles and has jumped out to fight outnumbered against enemies who should have outclassed him and won. 2: Family isn’t blood, on the course of the campaign, 4 different figures who were quite evil were at his parties or his own mercy. Each of these figures not only did he give a second chance, power, and trust, but he saved their lives and put his own on the line doing so. 1 of these characters tried to kill him on multiple occasions and failed, and when he was beat and could have been killed by a foreign power my character saved him, didn’t take any of his power away, and in the end the two are close friends who would die for the cause of saving the werewolves. 1 of these characters was a ass the entire time we knew them, and when they found their brother had been taken my character refused to let them do it alone and helped them save their brother. This character turned around and tried to kill the party and ended disappearing. We would learn at the end of the campaign they had had their memories erased and been shapeshifter into an NPC in our party, and when the party wanted to kill them after learning this Bigby got between the party and them and saved them. They are close friends. The last one was a corrupt queen who had stolen family and crown from two different party members. When captured there was talk of the death sentence and imprisonment. My character threw a lifeline, offering a position of power and influence, wealth, and diplomatic immunity and protection to her. She has been faithful and trustworthy, and enjoys working with him. These are his family that he made. Not because it was convenient or beneficial or even smart. But because he saw in them that gaping hole that had plagued him since he lost his family too. 3: He believes that nature will take its course and at some point he will die, but he doesn’t sit idly by and allow others to mess with the natural order. When an election for world leader came about and he realized none of the candidates are beneficial to his people, and none of them wanted to let everyone simply do as was natural to them and their people, and refused to stand idly by, instead joining as a candidate for the election and fighting for the right of people to live their lives as their morals and customs dictated, not forced into some system to be nothing but a number. 4: At the end of the day no matter if it would be smarter to keep his head down to remain anonymous, when innocence is threatened he will not stand idly by and will reveal himself in an instant to save a person that he could save if he acts NOW there isn’t time to wait for for a perfect world and for everyone to follow orders, good people need to act now, and not wait for some bureaucrats to say it’s ok, or for their systems to make everyone a law abiding citizen. It shouldn’t matter if the system agrees, good people should fight evil wherever they find evil. But everyone isn’t good or ever will be, and if you aren’t capable of defending yourself, then no one is responsible for your safety other then you. Longer then I thought. I think he’s Gruul personally, as he is so staunchly in favor of freedom and personal choice, but isn’t super self interested or ambitious either, whilst having zero delusions on the flaws of mortals and the fact it is a waste of time to try for perfection in anything, just do the best you can with, what you got, when you can and don’t be afraid to do what you feel is right, regardless of others opinions or what the “smart thing is”. Anyway, give thoughts if you got them, peace.
you're telling me I could get an above-rate creature with no downside? Obviously busted! I mean, that's a 10 turn clock that you have to burn a force of will on!
It is very difficult to know what colours align more to me, because I can see parts of me in most of them and I start identifying with many combinations at once xD but I guess overall, I have very little red and black in me
i still don’t understand the difference between red and gruul. is gruul just red in nature? is it just the feeling of “knowing who you are”? your innate self, not just emotion but every internal voice telling you what to do?
An easy way to understand allied colored pairs is that they double down on whatever it is they agree on and really, really don't like their shared enemy. So basically, Gruul is Green helping Red to double down on being an impulsive jackass who puts zero thought into anything they do. All the people in this comment section typing 50+ words on how much they identify with Gruul are lying to themselves.
After watching your color philosophy series I realized I have some of all colors in me. I'm passionate and can be emotional at times like red. I'm curious, always asking questions, and strive to be the best like blue. I think we can learn a lot from nature and our past like green. I also can be a little selfish at times like black. Finally I respect and think the world needs law for the protection of everyone like white. But if I had to choose one it would be naya though.
That's one of the best lessons in Magic Color Philosophy, EVERYONE has every color in them and these pieces come out at different time. What colors you are isn't about what you have and lack, its about what feels most like YOU. It's about what you both are and strive to be, even if you contain everything and show all traits. They most likely aren't equal. Yknow
I'd be be mad the the wooo spirit tree bullshit, but the man has to work with what Magic the Gathering gives him, which is hippy bullshit. So I'll not be mad. Just, tribal groups as depicted in this artwork? They were also civilization, and had complex social orders in that group, and they lived off the land because they had to. It was that or die. Now, some groups did keep this lifestyle, but the false dichotomy between nature people and cities makes me want to tear my hair out
Okay now that ive watched this, you do mention aspects of Destiny. So the gruul god of Destiny should also fit. Right? I stand by what I said on your poll about it, but you're the color expert. Not me. Personally I think the concept of Destiny is strictly Green but on a cosmic level. I dont really see the red side of it. Red is emotional, free, and impulsive. Red would typically reject and/or defy destiny.
No, that's Black and Blue who defy destiny not Red itself. Destiny is something Red can share with Green because they feel compelled to act on based on their impulse, along with Green's instinct, to fulfill their sense of purpose and adventure.
That's when Red is paired with Black that will reject Destiny, Red paired with Green is more like how you naturally act and express yourself as a living creature. Destiny for this pair is not an external force that controls them, it's their internal nature that drives them to fulfill those certain outcomes because they refuse to change(Green) and act before they think(Red). It ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy for Gruul and the reason why Blue is opposite of this pair, Blue thinks in the long term before making a decision and being the color of nurture, believes that you are a blank slate who can be molded in any way you wish to be.
I identify the most with Azorius' outer halves (Morality and Technology, so I respect Red) and with Izzet's closest halves (Technology and Chaos, so I want to shut out Black and its faustian bargains). However, I want to see how Chaos and Interdependence can interact as an interpretation of Gruul that respects Blue; I bet I can respect that.
I'll be honest...I don't vib with Gruul that much. My core is white, so while my ally is green...I am suspicious of red. To me, red taints the tranquility of green and makes it completely untamed and chaotic. It turns the magnificent animals of green into rampaging beasts! It makes green angry...and we don't like green when it is angry. Yeah Gruul is definitely not a philosophy I can get down with, because I do believe that there is way more out there to find. Gruul just...jealously defends its spot and doesn't think to go beyond with blue or become even greater with white. Don't get me wrong, Gruul is fun in moderation and there is no one else I would want by my side in combat than those in Gruul. But to live that way constantly? It feels so...limiting. Not to yuck anyone's yum if you do live by the Gruul philosophy. You do you...just do it over there please. XD
I identify with black red at the moment, i see these interpretations of green red as something that shouldn't be strived for. saying that civilization has stripped us of our human nature is like saying an ant is stripped of their ant nature because they were born inside of an anthill. if your life is so sad and you're so upset with everyone and everything around you placing limitations on how you can act, then make the world bend or break in such a way that will make you happy. i don't think you need to burn all of your money and be homeless to do that. as a matter of fact, i tend to think the power you hold in your possessions and civil comforts allow you to break that misery better than any kind of wild natured idiocy can
I wonder what red/green/blue will make. For one must question least they be lead astray. To think that one cannot be in touch with oneself within civilization or that one should not grow and improve themselves as a person is nothing but foolishness that breeds stagnation.
Do you think Gruul has the right idea, when it comes to how we should live our life, or is it missing the point entirely?

The Ravnica block was my first true foray into MtG. Gruul has always held a special place in my heart.
You always pick the right color combo at the right time for the character i'm playing in my campaign. It was Naya two years ago. Izzet last year. Now Gruul.
It's great when a plan comes together
I’m not a MTG fan, but the Bloomburrow set somehow got on my radar and the artwork completely charmed me. I’ve been reading a bit about Magic since then and the color pie interested me- it’s always fun to read about personality types and think about how you & your loved ones fit into them. So I took the color alignment quiz after reading about each color and got exactly what I thought I would: Red/Green. I don’t 100% align with this explanation of “Gruul”, but I highly value authenticity, love, and nature and absolutely get disturbed by the complexities of the modern world, lol. Nice video!
my theme is jeksai(red white and blue)
4 savannah lions
4 ragavan,nimble pilferer
4 stoneforge mystic
4 batterskull
4 lightning helix
4 inspired ultimatum
4 mass manipulation
4 evangelize

2 guile, sonic soldier

the deck is divided between half deck is best aggro spells and half of deck is best late game comeback spells. so i put my opponent on defense early and then late game power through the powerful late game spells.
Great video like always! While I don’t identify with Gruul, I am quite a fan. Being Gruul seems almost as relaxing and freeing as being Rakdos. But alas, red mana definitely is not my fate… 😅
I'm on the same page, gruul isn't quite my cup of tea, but they do have something going that I can appreciate.
I like the Gruul that just wants to be, to enjoy their existence and celebrate with others, and accept that you are who you are and that it's a beautiful thing to be you ♡
Beautiful and well rounded video, you hit the nail on the head again with the choice of artwork and music
Yeah, the quiz isn't perfect, but it does get close, and from there, we can do a bit of introspection.
This may be telling you something important : What are you allowing to influence and change you to view yourself in a light you yourself do not agree with? Take some time and look at those results, and ask yourself this : Who do you want to be, and why aren't you that person?
Amazing. A fuccin mazing!! My colors are finally here!!!
Great video Dice! This is a perfect reflection of this philosophy, and I couldn't imagine doing any better with it. Thank you so much for the work you do, bringing us your thoughts and discoveries into the color pie and all it entails!
Thanks, for the kind words, it makes it all worth the hard work.
God I love Gruul. ME SMASH, STUFF BREAKS. It’s the simple things in life that keep you going.
Philosophy? Gruul smash!
Even though I prefer Rakdos and Izzet, the deck I've been playing recently is Chishiro with a heavy counter focus. And so far, I've been extremely satisfied. The deck builds up very quickly.
Thank you Dice-Sama!!
Something I'm interested in is seeing what each color and color combination looks like as a villain. We all know what the variations of black look like, but what makes a Green White character evil or what leads a White Blue Red villain to make the actions they do?
I've actually made a couple of videos on evil and the color pie. That said those were all mono colored.
@@DiceTry Oh yes those were some of my favourites. Would love to see new ones including Color pairs!
I think going into pairs is a good idea, will add it to my list
gruul is definitely one of my favorites. my gruul deck:
4 praetors council
4 fireball
4 fanning the flames
4 crackle with power
2 creeping corrosion
2 shatterstorm
4 orcish settlers
4 overgrown battlement
4 wall of roots
4 axebane guardian
24 lands
awesome,waiting for this for a awhile ^_^
Does anyone know the card at 6:45?
Love Gruul, great video!
Kird ape was banned in extended when it debuted.
Nevropotence was legal
Force of will was legal
But kird ape was banned
you're telling me I could get an above-rate creature with no downside? Obviously busted! I mean, that's a 10 turn clock that you have to burn a force of will on!
Red and Green favorites Garfield colors simple the best of Mtg
This. This might be what I had in mind for my Barbarian
I do hear those primal voices. I will in fact…heed.
Amazing video mate! Can anyone guess the card name showing in minute 2:18 ?
In short: Gruul smash!
Almost forgot to watch this today.
It is very difficult to know what colours align more to me, because I can see parts of me in most of them and I start identifying with many combinations at once xD but I guess overall, I have very little red and black in me
i was expecting this video to just be 1 hour of screaming and chest beating and honestly it wouldnt be wrong
Kinda disappointed it wasn't now
It is criminal how few views you get
Haha thanks, things aren't too bad but I'm sure my time will come.
i still don’t understand the difference between red and gruul. is gruul just red in nature? is it just the feeling of “knowing who you are”? your innate self, not just emotion but every internal voice telling you what to do?
An easy way to understand allied colored pairs is that they double down on whatever it is they agree on and really, really don't like their shared enemy.
So basically, Gruul is Green helping Red to double down on being an impulsive jackass who puts zero thought into anything they do. All the people in this comment section typing 50+ words on how much they identify with Gruul are lying to themselves.
Gruul is 420, while green is essential you need something to light it
After watching your color philosophy series I realized I have some of all colors in me.
Now, some groups did keep this lifestyle, but the false dichotomy between nature people and cities makes me want to tear my hair out
All i heard was "Industrial society and its future"
Addlepates.
@@loneoutsider8004 my point is that red would reject any notion that their life is controlled by an outside force
XD
I identify with black red at the moment, i see these interpretations of green red as something that shouldn't be strived for. saying that civilization has stripped us of our human nature is like saying an ant is stripped of their ant nature because they were born inside of an anthill. if your life is so sad and you're so upset with everyone and everything around you placing limitations on how you can act, then make the world bend or break in such a way that will make you happy. i don't think you need to burn all of your money and be homeless to do that. as a matter of fact, i tend to think the power you hold in your possessions and civil comforts allow you to break that misery better than any kind of wild natured idiocy can
To me, Gruul represents evolution. The growth of green and the instincts that survive from red results in more enduring creatures.
I wonder what red/green/blue will make. For one must question least they be lead astray. To think that one cannot be in touch with oneself within civilization or that one should not grow and improve themselves as a person is nothing but foolishness that breeds stagnation.
This is basically the opposite of me
Gruul is just Ted Kasinski
Ted Kaczynski was more Simic than Gruul. Read some of his writings, they're quite interesting.
@@bladdnun3016 Split the difference and make him Temur
@@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle I can see that.
Gruul aka ecoterrorist
