It's the straightest of roads in the flattest of counties, but that's not to say it's a flat road. There's plenty of hills and dips on it that can easily hide an oncoming artic and someone doing an overtake at the wrong moment. That's pretty much the reason for the cameras and speed traps, and it's happened a lot of times. Might be worth adding a bit to the video about this roads terrible safety record. I don't want to come across as boring, I'm a complete petrolhead myself (cars and bikes), but this isn't a road for testing a high speed vehicle.
Hitting something will only ruin your day and you hit it hard enough that day will last you the rest of your sadly terminated life. Stay safe whilst having fun.
100%. The map makes it look like a really straight road so you kind of assume its gonna be some flat straight haven of a road for speeding. But driving it in reality, the road has lots of dips which go up and down which mean you don't always have overtaking opportunities. On top of that the road has some very slight kinks (on top of the Airbase kink of course) its not like perfectly straight. And of course, the speed cameras are there too. Not to mention HGVs trudging at like 40mph on it stop you from going faster anyway a lot of the time
We used to have a charity motorcycle run known as the Route 66 run, going from New York in Lincolnshire, to California (Yarmouth) in Norfolk. A pleasant summer run.
DO NOT overtake on this road. There used to be an ambulance at caenby corner cafe all day and sometimes a hearse for scooping up impatient boy racer teenagers possessing a shiny new licence. 😁
I'd argue that the Fosse Way at 200+ miles and almost straight is a contender. It has been broken up with the odd bypass and traffic calming scheme but it is a spectacular straight road. I used to take it from Leicester to Cirencester when working there on a site.
You should try England's genuine Route 66, the A66 between Middlesbrough and Workington. There are lots of abandoned sections particularly around Bowes after the road has been upgraded over the years. That road in the '80's was a winding country lane whereas now it is a modern dual carriageway. The scenery is also spectacular.
You’re right the scenery is spectacular but there are still multiple sections of road that have not been dualled both in North Yorkshire and Cumbria. On the single carriageway sections some crossovers have been staggered or the formation altered to improve safety by increasing visibility but it’s still a dangerous road and really needs to be dualled in it’s entirety. And yes only 35 years ago it was a winding meandering country road and it took ages to drive from Darlo to Penrith now it’s really quick providing you don’t get stuck behind a tractor on one of the single sections. You’re taking your life in your hands by overtaking on those sections!
As a resident of Boston (one of the slimmer ones I might add), I can share that one of the town's claims to fame is that the Pilgrim Fathers left from near here, or there abouts, to head off to America. So yes, Boston is famous for a group of people who were desperate to leave!
The Fosse Way from Moreton in the Marsh up to the point where it hits Watling Street is 40 miles dead straight with just one minor diversion at Brinklow.
A15 forms part of Ermine Street which runs all the way from London (somewhere outside Liverpool Street train station) all the way to York - it was the M1 of it's day.
I've been on the A15 today it's a lovely road to ride on with some fabulous views of the Lincolnshire countryside, re the question of which is the best sausage I've got to say I like them both
RAF Scampton has a bow and arrow as their emblem....because that's how it (roughly) looks from the air after the runway was extended and road "bent"around it. Also the A15 starting at Hessle is relatively new, extended when the Humber Bridge opened. If you notice the A15 disappears along the M180 a few miles to link with the original road. Good video as ever
Yes of course between East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, which used to be the not at all liked really county of Humberside. But that is where the Humber Bridge is too.
My van broke down a while ago near Burton waters, not far from the A15 and RAF scampton. Because of the efficiency of the RAC I was at the roadside from 9.30 am until 5.45 pm I did get a display from the red arrows though 👍🏼👍🏼 I think I’ve said before on previous vids I deliver nationwide so I get about lol I know the A15 very well Now I know it’s famous I’m getting an autograph the next time I’m on it 😁
Hi another good video. There was a long road in Thetford Norfolk but then they built the A11 on it & around it. That might go in your abandoned roads because you can still go on part of it but the rest they blocked off. If you put in main road south of Thetford on UA-cam. You can see how long the road was. Also if you put in A11 construction from Thetford update. That we'll show you how long it is from the air & show you the old bit that they go around it.
I'm so happy I discovered you tonight. I'm just a normal US American woman that has laughed the most watching your videos. I absolutely adore John. He's is sarcastically hilarious.
I drive along this section of A15 quite often and it's a absolute pig of a road to drive. Although it's straight it's also very undulating making it difficult to overtake slower traffic. Also don't worry about the speed cameras driving along this section of road during the day. If you get above 40 mph you're do well because the amount of lorries and tractors that use this road has to be seen. Not a good road to test your high speed vehicle on believe me!
the romans called it Ermine street. right next to it there are still elements of it and the roundabout at the top end it goes trough that. its kinda cool
The A15 is a great commuting road. It was 80% of my commute at one point and if you get behind a lorry and set your cruise control your pretty much set for 30 mins at a time between roundabouts. The M1 was probably the only contender.
I took my first Aston here and got pulled over for being too excessive with my speed and they were more interested in the car, just got a warning but they still wanted me to floor it off so they could hear the exhaust.
It's also known as one of Lincolnshire's most dangerous roads. There's been loads of crashes, usually involving artic trucks and hundreds of deaths. It may be straight but it isn't flat !!!
As a truck driver myself I can say with some authority the crashes caused by crap driving and mostly oncoming vehicles cutting to the white line or more, causing the other vehicle to drop a wheel in the dirt then be pulled off the road......I can get flat out through those bends fully loaded both directions and stay within the lines, no drama. (most of the truck crashes happen on the wiggly bit near Caenby Corner)
The road was straight even after RAF Scampton was built during the war; the runway was lengthened in 1956 when the Avro Vulcan lived at Scampton, so the road needed to be moved.
Thank you Jon for the information on the Ford 🙄. Many year ago our unofficial car club would use the Fens and the like, to test our driving ability and our Brakes. When we recognised another UCCM heading our way, two flashes of the head lights if everything was ok behind you, six if the police were chasing you. God bless the Panda Car 🚔 Toot Toot

There's another straight road in Lincolnshire, between the villages of Frithville and Revesby Bridge, north-west of Boston. That's known as the 7-mile straight (although seems to be closer to 6). P.S. Boston lost it's title of the fattest town
The best sausage is definitely the Newmarket sausage, from Suffolk. Well it's technically in Suffolk but it's kind of absurd, it should definitely be Cambridgeshire, it's completely surrounded by Cambridgeshire except for like one road connecting it to the rest of Suffolk. As for which is best between Cumberland and Lincolnshire sausages... probably Lincolnshire. But honestly neither of them are anything to get too excited about.
Wait, how did you escape Yorkshire?! (pls help) A15 is a horrific road to drive, I used to drive/ride it every day, both sides of Lincoln and honestly, I'm so glad I dont have to do it daily. They desperately need to turn it into a dual carriage way.
I think the longest straightest fastest road I've been on is the A836 between Castletown and Thurso up near John O'Groats. Is only 3 and a half miles but was deserted, with massive visibility, and no cameras....
Impressive for the UK. I used to drive on I80 though Nebraska. That's straight for about 70 miles. I had my Honda Pilot shake it's steering wheel at me to "put in human inputs" as it thought I wasn't holding the wheel when in fact I just had no need to actually turn the wheel. Stupid car...
I used to live in a village called Hibaldstow near the Scunthorpe bit. It was indeed a straight road but it wasn't exactly an "overtakers mecca." There are stretches of the road which - while straight - dipped, and drivers would often pull out into the oncoming lane intent on leaving you floundering in their dust, to be suddenly confronted with an oncoming vehicle that they hadn't seen, rising out of the dip.
I spent a couple of days at a mental health hospital just near RAF Scamption. Some say the straightness of the road caused me to go mad, others say I was there swapping out every PC on site
The A15 'kink' was a later addition added after Scampton was extended due to the road originally crossing the runway, which can still be seen on old maps. Traffic lights stopped the traffic when Vulcans were taking off and landing, have been stopped there many times.

road has quite a history ------ used to have friend lived sleaford //// lot on wiki about road --- The A15 towards the Humber Bridge, goes directly across the runways of the former RAF Bomber Command airfield at RAF Elsham Wolds (where over 1,000 of its aircrew were killed), which is now the Elsham Wolds[56] Industrial Estate. The former route of the A15, pre-1978, is now called B1206,[57] and ends at New Holland, where the A15 formerly connected with the Humber Ferry. The £5.6 million 6-mile (9.7 km) Brigg Bypass to Barton-upon-Humber Bypass (up to where the B1218 crosses)[58] section opened in June 1978.
A deadly road in my view. Many years ago I was driving North along it and I started to overtake a car only to find that there wasn’t enough forewarning of an oncoming dip. In my opinion the no overtaking warning markings are not long enough prior to reaching the dip. This was the first time that I had ever driven along this road. I learnt a lesson there and luckily no accident occurred.
John, WHY not check out the electric bray in Ayrshire Scotland, when your looking down the hill, the car runs up in neutral or facing up the hill, the car rolls up in neutral 😊
do you know the reason how and why the A15 is split?... starting in Hessle you come over the Humber Bridge heading south and it stops at Barnetby.... then you have to travel West along the M180 towards Scunthorpe for a good few miles, before picking up the A15 again south to Lincoln..... how come it is in 2 sections and miles apart rather than a single continuous road.
Lots of roads were "split" as they were superceded by more major roads and motorways. I often use the A361 in Somerset and Devon. It's technically the longest three digit A road in the UK. In parts around me it disappears into the A38, A39 and M5 for short sections. The original alignment became the B3227 in the 80s when the North Devon Link Road was built. In the case of the A15 I believe the M180 took some of it's alignment, so technically it is the M180 (A15)
The Humber Bridge section of the road was built to serve the bridge from the south. Never an original part at the 15 probably just a convenient number to give it being relatively close
It's the straightest of roads in the flattest of counties, but that's not to say it's a flat road. The £5.6 million 6-mile (9.7 km) Brigg Bypass to Barton-upon-Humber Bypass (up to where the B1218 crosses)[58] section opened in June 1978.
Lincolnshire sausages are the best by far.
It might be one of the straightest roads it also one of the most dangerous.
The drivers who drive on it are danderous.
Lincolnshire sausage beats cumberland every day of the week!
Definitely.
I'll host a pride parade down the A15. Straightest road my arse.
Make it so!
It's not looking downhill though is it, it's an optical illusion!!
Brae.
@@htimsid Electric brae, that's correct 👍
do you know the reason how and why the A15 is split?... starting in Hessle you come over the Humber Bridge heading south and it stops at Barnetby.... then you have to travel West along the M180 towards Scunthorpe for a good few miles, before picking up the A15 again south to Lincoln..... how come it is in 2 sections and miles apart rather than a single continuous road.
In the case of the A15 I believe the M180 took some of it's alignment, so technically it is the M180 (A15)
That's called a "Multiplex"
The Humber Bridge section of the road was built to serve the bridge from the south. Never an original part at the 15 probably just a convenient number to give it being relatively close
lincoln sausage, the best
That was: nice😂😊
