If I don't reply to your comment is most likely because the new UA-cam commenting system is being a jerk and not letting me reply for completely mysterious reasons. As far as the new computer goes, I am having an issue with the USB ports which I am trialing to narrow down to either hardware or software and it's not really that fun atm. -___-
What are your most recommended headsets for gaming? I'm leaning towards the AD900X, but still not really sure. I need good directional sound with a large soundstage.
thanks for uploading this man! looks like these might be my next pair of cans for gaming, i love my m-50s but the sound signature in the 700x's is what im looking for
I've just tried these headphones and the 900X at my local audiophile store. They sound amazing for female vocals, be it rock or pop. I listen to Japanese songs btw. Although they can be extremely harsh with the ssshhhh and pssss. Wasn't to my liking but they really do bring out the best in female vocals =)
Have you heard of the trick with the 3d wing system where you get a rubber bandand put it on the wings? You experiment with the type of rubber band to get the right fit for you
Love your headphone reviews btw! "But" Knowing that everyone's hearing is different, I have to disagree. I own both the ATH AD 700 (purple) and the AD 900x and find both really thin and on the edge of way too much brightness. I do love the openness that these produce but after just a few tracks on UA-cam, I find myself reaching for a DT880 or a pair of HD600's. Example: Daisy Gray's, "About You", here on UA-cam is a pretty good recording. With the AD 900x, the "S" sound after her lyrics kills this whole song and will make me rip the 900x's off my head. With a DT880 or HD600, you can tell the song is done really well by the studio. Hope you try it....... Before you ask, Fiio E17 with the seprate Fiio desktop amp. Please keep those headphone reviews coming! I still want a pair of AD1000 or 2000 in the future, not really sure why?
Hey man to start id like to thank you for all your reviews! keep them up they're great! I've got a question, would you say the 900X is worth 2x more than the 700X? As i can get them at half the price of the 900X
Well it's hard to say what things are worth to you. I don't think the sound is literally twice as good, but the build quality is better as well if that means something to you. I think a 50% premium over the 700X is in line with what I expect, but maybe not a 100%.
I just bought myself these headphones. Will be receiving them some time next week which I'm really looking forward to. I also ordered a antlion mod mic 4.0, which I have read is a very good combo. I play a lot of fps shooters like insurgency, cs, bf which I have read that their predecessor was really good for. I'm feeling like a little kid before Christmas. Can't wait :)
Hi! Been using this combo for a while now, and it works really well together. Everyone I talk to on teamspeak etc. hears me really well. And the mod-mic does not pick up background noise, so people not getting annoyed by my cherry mx-red keyboard anymore hehe. The wires from AD700X an mod mic are quite stiff and takes a long time to "stretch" out from how it is packed. I was thinking of buying sleeving to sleeve AD700x and mod-mic together, but instead went for a good old see-through tape hehe.. Works allright. As to the magnet attachment for mod-mic on the alu-mesh on AD700X works quite well and is strong enough.
Thanks man :D You have defiantly eased my mind on this and i appreciate the response :D Good idea with the sleeve i think i may have to grab my self one in time. oh noes and there is that hype building xD
***** Oh now that iv your attention :D. I can get the AD700x New, or the AD900x second hand, for the same price. Which should i go for? I need them for competitive play but i always want some bass for music/movies, thanks
***** Hey so i ended up getting the AD900 and i'm wondering what software should i use with them, also one thing, the left side driver emits the right side drivers sound and vice versa, whats up with that?
I'd like some input here. I have a pair of closed-back (HyperX cloud). I play a decent amount of all kinds of games, and watch a lot of videos and listen to a lot of different kinds of music, but probably mostly Rock (+J-rock) and hip-hop, other times a lot of vocals/guitars and more easy-listening. I don't rly feel pleased with my audio quality for music and I'm looking for an afforadable open-back to spice things up a bit, but I can't get to try any and can't understand all these descriptions of how it sounds (other than sound stage). Looking at the frequency response, I noticed these are very low on the bass side and I'm assuming this is a feature of open-back. Everyone seems to agree that they're "better" for music (and partially for games) but is that just certain types of (classical instrument) music? Do they have more interesting sound than slightly more expensive closed-back? Do non-gaming closed-back (that isn't way more expensive) sound way better than mine? Does having an impedence of 30-32ohms (compatible with mobile devices) rly limit the quality of the sound or its just for amps (I'd likely use it mostly with a PC)? I don't know what headphones I want, lol.
so will these be as good as closed back design (e.g ath m50) when playing electronic or rock/metal? or are they simply better for movies/slower kind of music centred primarily around vocals?
Lachlan, great job overall! I have a question: what is the "purest" sounding pro headphone you'd suggest to use for using for audio editing? Maybe you can do a vid on this sometime, like a comparison for people who are into sound editing / videographers / filming. Thanks!
Sure! The headphone I use for monitoring nowadays is generally the Beyerdynamic DT880, but I also use the Sennheiser HD25 and Sony MDR 7550. No headphone is completely neutral, if you know how your monitor compares to other sources you can be aware and compensate to a degree.
***** Thanks for the reply. So you mean one should try multiple sources and try to adjust accordingly. Beyerdynamic DT880 is nice, however it's an open headphone, can you recommend one which is closed of the same size?
I finally managed to try this headphones today, i own an Asus Xonar DX and was looking for some good headphones for FPS gaming and music. They sound great but, if i had the money, should i go for the AD 900x? Any alternative with a similar price but closed for better bass response?
I would imagine the A900X would be somewhat similar! But I don't hear about as much people using the A900X for gaming. If I wanted to spend more and get better bass I'd get the MA900 :3
Generally full size headphones tend to have bigger perceived soundstages, though the differences can be pretty minimal at times. Full size headphones do tend to be much more comfortable for long term wear though.
Hey is this headphone still a good buy in 2020, I'm looking for headphone with amazing soundstage and imaging that won't give the "in your head" kind of sound
Yes but please read up on more reviews as the loose fit is definitely an issue for people with smaller sized heads. You can get around it by using a black elastic hair band to loop the head-clamps for a closer/tighter fit which is what I've done with my pair.
I have a dilemma, right now I'm seriously thinking on getting a pair of MA900s (for music, movie and gaming) and I wish to know about other cans (open back, over ear) at the same price range that I also should consider. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nice video like always, btw.
There's plenty of options at that price point. I think the DT880 is worth considering if you want something more forward, or the AD1000X if you want something more atmospheric...
Sorry, I didn't update the description. You can check out his guide here: www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-updated-1-9-2014-shure-srh1840-added
silly cause you essentially say its a beautiful headset for the price i am a BIG GAMER I NEED FOOTSTEP PLAYING SO THESE WILL SATISFY MY WANT AND THEN SOME IVE BEEN TOLD wanna make sure cuase i was going to buy the astro A40's but now habe mixed educated reviews based on studio opinions of what a headset should do please help
i have watch many of your reviews i want to know what is your source of music MP3 MP4 AIF ACC source of player cellphone, MP3 player .... so i can determine more accurate reviews.. also can you do some UE earphones ? they are certainly the best earphone on the commercial and private market
I've had these for a year now. They have great imaging and soundstage (good for fps). But they arent "fun" in the sense that you won't get much bass which for fps gaming is a good thing but for music.. not so much. I'd get 20 dollar velour ears pads from amazon as the stock ones are garbage. Leather ones will distort soundstage so stick with the velour. The headphones can slide down on smaller heads but what most people have donte is put a rubber band on the head rest to make it a little tighter which makes it just right. All in all its the best thing you'll get for the price and the cons are easily fixed with the above mentioned things.
Give the ws-99s a try. I feel like it is a hidden gem that everyone over looks. Reading this convinced me to buy them, and I am not disappoint. www.head-fi.org/t/650449/the-new-ws99-ws77-pg-57

This review is very good! Should I get these when console gaming (My TV has a 3.5 mm Headphone Jack)?
I'd recommend this if you were on a budget, otherwise I'd go for the Sony MDR MA900 :)
*****
Alright. I guess it's settled. I'm getting this! Subscribed and liked! :D Watching the review again.
is this sound the same as audio technica ath50X ?
What are your most recommended headsets for gaming? I'm leaning towards the AD900X, but still not really sure. I need good directional sound with a large soundstage.
I've been trying to find a detailed comparison of the new and old models like this, thanks a bunch.
Good stuff, Keep it up mate
Thanks mate. Are you an Aussie? :3
Nah, just part of my lingo.
thanks for uploading this man! looks like these might be my next pair of cans for gaming, i love my m-50s but the sound signature in the 700x's is what im looking for
Going from gaming with apple earbuds to the AD700x lol
Lol that’s crazy. Any comment on your experience?
I've just tried these headphones and the 900X at my local audiophile store. They sound amazing for female vocals, be it rock or pop. I listen to Japanese songs btw. Thanks for the review. I'm still new to the open-air headphones and I'm curious as to how does this headphone's sound compared to the ATH-A700x.
To put it simply, it's more open sounding, but less bassy.
Great review and editing !
Nice review. And hey, nice new computer!
Is this good for small heads????????
Thanks Lachlan. Love seeing Aussie based reviewers.
Hi Bro nice review. Very detailed. Can this headphone be easily driven by a smartphone? or ad500x?
what do you think the new asus strix headset will be like?
The ad700x's build quality looks awesome,I own the old ad700 and I think it's a bit loose and easy to drop off my head

Hey, how did this turn out? I have just ordered them both as well yet i have doubts about how well the Modmic will attach to the mesh. Thanks :3

I would very much consider getting the AKG K612 or the Sony MDR MA900 if you want some bassier all rounders!
***** Hey so i ended up getting the AD900 and i'm wondering what software should i use with them, also one thing, the left side driver emits the right side drivers sound and vice versa, whats up with that?
That sounds like there is something going a bit wrong on your outputs... might want to check your settings!
As Always Lachlan excellent review and definitely open cans I would purchase

Perhaps try the AKG K550 then! ua-cam.com/video/E5mau_8XqAE/v-deo.html
But I really prefer the HD25 for field monitoring. Or the Beyerdynamic DT1350...

Hey lachlan! I really like how you do these reviews and comparisons, can I request that you review the NAD Viso HP50? Thanks and more power :D
Wow 3rd mention in a day... I'll add it to the list of things to keep in mind!
What are the (typical) sound quality differences between full size head phones and portable headphones?
Generally full size headphones tend to have bigger perceived soundstages, though the differences can be pretty minimal at times. Full size headphones do tend to be much more comfortable for long term wear though.
how is sound compared to msr7?
Nice review again! :)
Heard any planars yet? I'll think you dig the orthodynamic sound :)
I do indeed love planars :3

Do these work with ps4?
ad700/x or akg k701/2 for bigger soundstage?
Akg 701 has more soundstage
This gives me the confidence to purchase to buy the AT ADG1 gaming headphone which uses the same driver as the 700x!
Nice! I'll probably have a review up of those eventually as well :3
This or Hifiman HE400i?
Should I get these or the 900x???? Plz I need answer 2
Nerd Potato no
ad700x or ad900x?? >.
i dont see the links for the gamer guy
Sorry, I didn't update the description. You can check out his guide here: www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-updated-1-9-2014-shure-srh1840-added
g4me one vs hd558 vs ad700x? for battlefield 4 gaming
g4me one is slightly better for gaming and better overall using.
Ad700x hands down for soundstage
I can't wait till mine comes in. :D
im getting this now,thanks
Ur good at this.
Just ordered the 1000s !
Have you tried the HD598 ? How do they compare ?

I really enjoy the sound but the fit and long cable are insanely bad. The company should redesign these and it would be perefect.
Man, I wear a pair of THICC glasses, will these fit?
Too bad the MDR MA900 has long been discontinued and nowhere to be found.
So smiley. Sup with that?
Release your fucking swagger Lachlan!!

i already have ad 700 but one of the 3d wings snapped off. time to investigate ma 900!
Aw that's a shame. You should look at getting it repaired or sell it off to some poor owner who needs some replacement drivers!
For a gamer....700 or 700x?
maybe 700x,700x's earpad is improved, also no lack low freq(better low bass than AD700,meaning low freq gose out through gap between skin and earpad)
Boy the constant repeating of the full model number on each phone you're discussing at any given moment got very hard to listen to!
千と千尋の神隠し sountrack ftw
