Most fertiliser has poo in it of some kind ,my friend. And if you live in a large city the water you drink has been through many many people. Look up aquaponics, growing food with its roots in huge fish tanks, the plants absorb the nutrients from the fish poo just like this basil and you eat the fish and eat the veg . Win win.
Does basil have any affect on seed shrimp? Basil is mosquito repellant. It is toxic to mosquito larvae. I just want to know about it's interaction with seed shrimp, so I can start my seed shrimp culture with basil while fighting off mosquito

It will bloom. Plants give most of the energy to the bloom. Removing blooms forces the plant to grow more branches with more leaves - I cultivate the plant to collect as many leaves as possible. And to get more branches for making new cuttings. That is why I remove blooms.
If you let the basil bloom. Once the flowers dry out, you can collet the black seeds by crushing the dried flowers in your fingers. I just collected 80 seeds from my basil blooms!

:) Thank you very much! I use only natural light coming from windows. Nevertheless, you can use artificial light as well. The best LED lights for this purpose are those that emit light in red light spectrum. Just keep in mind that red color filters are not substitute for red light spectrum ;) Such LED could emit light in all other spectrums as well. Respectful manufacturers provide information about emitting spectrum on the package of lamps. Most often you may find those LEDs in pet stores, and surely online. Also, keep in mind that algae also need light in the same red spectrum. So, exposing an aquarium to this kind of light is sure way to boost algae growth. All the best on your adventure!

Hey mate what above water level plant would you say reduces nitrates the most? Is it pothos as alot say or do you think basil etc are just as good, if not better?
I don't have means to measure the effectiveness to tell you difference between plants for sure. There is one aspect that I use to judge effectiveness of plants and to justify what plants to grow. See if fish (or whatever your aquatic pets are) eat the plant. It is actually fundamental for my self-sustaining aquariums ;) Just growing in water plants are useless in this regards. Plants that can be consumed by fish are the only one to consider. I did not use Basil as main source of food for my guppies for sure. Neither mint or other common kitchen herbs that smell. Common duckweed I have in almost all my aquariums. That is probably the best candidate in this category. It pumps waste (nitrates) from water very effectively and it's a great source of protein. It has more protein than soybeans ;) Critters and fish alike eat duckweed. And ducks get fat very fast on it too :) And it fits in your description of "above water level" too ;) All the best!
Nice Video 👏, I like Genovese basil too much and am just new to the aquarium hobby. My question is about the taste if it becomes stinky since herbs are sensitive for the soil and water it grows through.
Well, the test sensitivity is different from person to person. The basil I grew seem to be alright - not too stinky. Though, I would rather leave it for you to check on ;) All the best on your adventure!
Live depends on many factors (size of the fish, size of the plant and etc.) Nevertheless, fish should be alright with even one plant, but...keeping a single fish is not good for the fish. Fish (as every other live creatures including human) have feelings. I have a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/k4Av3bDO8ik/v-deo.html All the best!
I feed my fish once a day. Give them amount of fish food flakes enough to eat in about 2-3 minutes. If they don't eat - it means they are not hungry. So, than I don't feed them next day. And so it goes ;)
Most oxygen gets in water through water to air surface exchange. And plants release and consume oxygen through leaves. So, to answer your question - it does not help with oxygen for fish directly. However, plants feed on waste dissolved into water - that helps to keep your aquarium clean and fish happy.
Thank you for asking!! I don't sell, but give away whatever spare fish or plants I may have. Here is my video explaining all about it (check comments!): ua-cam.com/video/CL6a13Pq60o/v-deo.html I just gave away some of my fish to one of my friends...I may have either newborn fry soon or breeding couple next month (hope so). Cannot tell you for sure at that moment - I just came back from a week of vacation...Check comments on the video (link above), perhaps someone can do it now. Either way we can stay in touch ;)

I did not notice any problem. Basil could be mosquito repellent...but it is not Basil roots that are repellent ;)
@@4me Good to know. Thanks for the response.
One more question. What is the size of the pipet you use?
How often do you perform water changes ?
Thank you for the question!
The last time I changed water in all my aquariums was at the end of 2016.

All the best!
What happens when you let the basil bloom?
It will bloom. Plants give most of the energy to the bloom. Removing blooms forces the plant to grow more branches with more leaves - I cultivate the plant to collect as many leaves as possible. And to get more branches for making new cuttings. That is why I remove blooms.
If you let the basil bloom. Once the flowers dry out, you can collet the black seeds by crushing the dried flowers in your fingers. I just collected 80 seeds from my basil blooms!
Great! Gracie Mille
My pleasure! Thank you very much!
Can you grow a basil plant fully submerged in aquarium?
My previous attempts to grow it fully submerged failed. Submerged leaves wilt in water.

BTW can i grow basil under LED lights or flourescent ones?
:) Thank you very much!
I use only natural light coming from windows. Nevertheless, you can use artificial light as well. The best LED lights for this purpose are those that emit light in red light spectrum. Just keep in mind that red color filters are not substitute for red light spectrum ;)
Such LED could emit light in all other spectrums as well.

Is your high definition aquarium 1080p or 4k?
Proportions are the same for 1080 and 4k.
You can eat the leaves??? really? won't that be contaminated when it grew in an aquarium??
Thank you for the question!
I eat it, my family (wife and kids) eat it and I deem you can eat it too. There is nothing in my aquariums to cause contamination of any kind. I maintain natural aquariums using natural aquarium fish care routines: ua-cam.com/video/eKDWgUO4VsM/v-deo.html feeding my fish with natural food I make: ua-cam.com/video/U7x5fw6-vSM/v-deo.html

fish waste diesnt contaminate it fertilizes alot of farm grown things use cow poop as a fertilizer
Not when the leaves grow above water level.

Lol happy basil. Is there a reason you don't want them to bloom?
:)
Cutting off flowers (preventing them from blooming) is necessary to encourage growth of leaves.

also the leaves become bitter after the basil blooms
Do you change the water on your nuersery or Just add some water ?

I add dechlorinated water and fish food.

How much does this impact the nitrates?
I don't test water for amount of nitrates to tell you for sure.
Do you eat the basil that comes from your fish tanks?
I am not big fan of salads to begin with. But my wife and kids are. And they used basil and some other herbs from my aquarium gardens to make salads.
And ducks get fat very fast on it too :) And it fits in your description of "above water level" too ;)
All the best!
Though, I would rather leave it for you to check on ;)
All the best on your adventure!

If i put one fish in a bottle with just one planet will the fish die or not ??
Live depends on many factors (size of the fish, size of the plant and etc.)
Nevertheless, fish should be alright with even one plant, but...keeping a single fish is not good for the fish. Fish (as every other live creatures including human) have feelings. I have a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/k4Av3bDO8ik/v-deo.html
All the best!
Michael Langerman ok.. if i put 2 fish with some planet do i feed them every day all thay will feed on the planet?
I feed my fish once a day. Give them amount of fish food flakes enough to eat in about 2-3 minutes. If they don't eat - it means they are not hungry. So, than I don't feed them next day. And so it goes ;)
Great Videos
Thank you very much!
Make a video of penny worth from stem cutting thanks salamat
It would take time, but I may do it anyway ;)
@@4me thanks sir
Is it helps to get fishes oxygen?
Most oxygen gets in water through water to air surface exchange. And plants release and consume oxygen through leaves. So, to answer your question - it does not help with oxygen for fish directly. However, plants feed on waste dissolved into water - that helps to keep your aquarium clean and fish happy.
