Damn that makes me feel old..
In one episode they showed that BoJack has a constant voice in his head always belittling him and keeping him a state of self-hate, it is incredibly hard to a kind, caring person when you have that nagging voice and it won't shut up no matter what you do.
That episode is called ‘Stupid Piece of Shit’
What else do we know about Bojack? Through the entire series until he goes to rehab, every chance he gets to do something for himself that might make that voice a little quieter, might make a little easier to make good choices, he chooses not to. He drinks, eats like garbage, never exercises, runs away from connection, does hard drugs, turns down therapy. He is not just inwardly destructive, but chooses again and again to be outwardly destructive as well.
What can we learn from this? His life was filled with chances over and over and over to make things better instead of continue down the path he was on. We should not waste those chances when we get them.
@@KD-ou2np Sometimes people are so filled with depression and self-hate that they can't see the great opportunities. That voice makes you blind to pretty much anything good.

@@bsanchez3563 that nagging voice is not a conscience. It's very abusive it will start to beat you down at the worst times even when you are trying to your best. It will tell you to unalive yourself. It will tell you that everyone in your life would better off if you were dead.
This video was very well done I had several revelations watching it more so than my first watch through of Bojack
I wish this video existed a year earlier. In one of my college humanities courses, I wrote my final paper on the themes and content of Bojack Horseman in relation to the Buddhist belief system and philosophies… this would have been awesome to reference! The video is amazing, both engaging and educational, well done!
nah. the philosophy of bojack horsemen is simple: if you're rich, you can forever be a shit to the people around you and everyone you meet, then wallow in self-pity, trauma-dump, and repeat the same cycle over and over again.
oh yea, and laws are not written and enforced to "punish immorality." They exist primarily to protect the rich and powerful. whatever protection the poor get from laws is purely a side effect.

This is a good video! Absolutely solid job. I completely agree with the interpretations that you've given. One thing, however, please look up the pronunciation of philosopher's names and the names of things like "Sisyphus." It somewhat damaged my enjoyment of the video, because although I can tell you did your research, it makes it feel a little underdeveloped. Overall good video! I am absolutely in love with this video! You raise several themes as to why this is my favorite series. The philosophical inquiry and parallels you make are uncanny and well said. Existenitaalism and the Determinism vs. Free Will debate is complex, yet you presented it eloquently with the show being a great framework. I always think about how in that episode with BoJack underwater, attempting to apologize to Kelsey, he writes the only connection we have at the end of our days is one another. In my opinion it shows that the writers seem to favor or side with Simone De Beauvoir's existential philosophy --- specifically her work in Ethics of Ambiguity. We can only reach "transcendence" and "authenticity" through our connection with others...so interesting to think about

Omg ikr fwiw others.. an philosophy being explaimed to makes me feel some.. amusement and yet so fucling curious to know more somehow.. I i just find it so.. idk kewl and kimd of like how, different religiouns use phrases differently if not sort of similar concepts, however slight, or not I for what it is worth, more often than not, find that, I feel it is, so very interesting by how, it makes meh wonder all of the/any wau or what makes them differ. It feels so interesting to learn more of the various concepts that exist or have names or otherwise. And what they are/how they work or are based on/rely on.. other concepts etc. Legit

It would be cool if one or more of the characters came to the conclusion on their own to change for the better but its really hard. Sometimes you dont realize something has become a problem even when its staring you right in the face, til you realize changing the behavior is for the best.

I don't think you give determinism it's fair shake. I'm an absurdist hard determinist that believes in acountability. We are humans, social animals. we hurt each other, from an evolutionary standpoint it makes sense that we would develop behaviors that punish those that harm the group/community. we are primates. Free will could very well be an illusion that we feel just because we are smart enough to know THAT we make decisions. We should keep dangerous individuals away from society but we should not punish them, we should attempt to rehabilitate them if possible and fix the systemic issues that lead to individuals comitting crime, such as poverty for example. Why does the top 1% have so much btw?
my main point is that the way I see it, determinism is a claim about metaphysics with implications on the effectiveness of punishment as a means of controlling behaviour. You can be an existentialist deteminist just as you can be an absurdist determinist or a nihilist determinist
That's fair. Seems more like you are a soft determinist rather than a hard determinist, since existentialism and determinism aren't compatible.
That's what I personally subscribe to, but I didn't touch on it since the show never really addressed it, so there was never an appropriate time in the video to talk about it.
If you want a show that does cover compatabilism, albeit not directly, I'd suggest Boondocks. It is pretty racially charged though.
@@admiralmoor no, I do not believe in free will, meaning I am a hard determinist, or real determinist. Determinism says there is no free will. Compatibilism is contradictory by definition as the moment you believe in free you are no longer a determinist, because everyone understands that we're effected by our environment, but the determinist says every action we take is predetermnined just as everything else is. You can have moral accountability with determinism and you dont need free will to get it, you can just believe we were predetermined to hold that concept as valuable as advanced social animals. As a Materialist, I believe all animals are just meat machines and humans are meat machines that got so smart we realized all our decisions are just based on our hardware and software and that scares us, that our actions are just as instinctually based as every other animal, even if we do ponder, there is no escaping determninism without a belief in something supernatural-like. A belief in something unexplainable and unprovable, that we're special. I see it as very similar to a belief in an omniscient omnipotent benevolent God, It's something we came up with because we got too smart and it makes us feel good. But that's just my opinion.
Also the reason I think existensialism can be compatible with determinism is the same reason you think determinism is compatible with free will, and it's because how we label ourselves doesnt have to be based on everyone else's definitions, especially when those labels pertain to unprovable metaphysical theories such as belief in god or free will and the way in which we live our lives. How we utilise the concept in our lives is what matters. You don't have to accept free will to live as an existentialist just as you dont have to believe in determinism to live as an absurdist. I believe you can be an agnostic religious person even though that's contradictory too, but I mean it in the sense that you don't assume you're objectively right just because your holy book says so and you think god spoke to you. All great philosophers contradict themselves eventually. Leaving a degree of uncertaintly is necessary for intellectual honesty, and who are we to say "no you cant co-opt my phenomenological understanding of the world because you dont believe in my metaphysical claims I think goes along with them"? @@admiralmoor

I hate when they say hurt people hurt people cause people have been hurting me since day one.i know how it feels why would put someone else through that plus it’s draining i let people know from the jump bro i need love I need genuine friendship leave me alone.i haven’t had human interaction besides family i seriously don’t know how to talk to people anymore if they’re not family on god it’s stressful.cause my whole life I was trying to understand people like dude I am not your enemy I know how it feels but damn man
I really get this… i always thought that people are good-hearted in their nature and tried to understand why they did things but i was simply reflecting my own inner thoughts to them, and later i’ve realised that some people just get pleasure in making others feel bad and they just do not think about the concequences for others but simply act on their selfish impulses and lack empathy :/ but finally as a young adult i found my people and for the first time i could be my self around and i don’t feel stressed. I found out i was just masking my autism to not bother others which was making me feel so stressed and burnt out after hanging with most people and it made me hate my true self more. I don’t know if this is the case for you or if i’m just rambling about my life, but i genuinely hope you will find those people that will accept and like you simply because you are you. It requires you to be the person you are no matter how people percieve you and it is hard. Most people won’t like it but the right people will and those are the ones you want in your life. But you have to give them a chance.
