  • Old friend of the show & Mazda Engineer, Dave Coleman, takes you on a VERY DEEP technical dive of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. He starts with details such as where the electric power steering is mounted, moves to the Miata’s new engine to demonstrate not only how but why Mazda engineers made the decisions they did in developing the new Mazda Miata ND He continues all the way through to the rear of the car as well as introduces the concept of a Miata petting zoo . . .

    This is the only car I've bought new and this is the reason why! The only manufacturer actually putting engineering effort in their cars to make it more driver oriented and lighter at the same time. More of Dave Coleman please!
    And I love it. There's nothing like it.

    Pretty casual and informal content for any large corporation, let alone a car company. A breath of fresh air.
    This philosophy only helps make the MX-5 more approachable.

    Absolutely love his unfiltered comments and the way he went about the video. Parts on the floor, clanging parts, unscripted lines, an enthusiast who's an engineer, and the random comments which must have had the marketing department squirming. It doesn't get better!

    Man I love Coleman! the king of Sport Compact Car who finally got his dream job with Mazda! really interesting things they've done, I like the 1:1 6th gear with a tall rear end concept, I've never seen that before, some very cool weight savings too, great analysis! Project 510 for life Dave! )

    Given the many complaints about faulty ND gearboxes, I wonder if the balance between light weight and quality is ok. To my opinion the ND should be equipped with a better and mayby somewhat heavier more durable gearbox. My ND 2023 G184 gets a gearbox swap, and I am not the only one. Under full Mazda warranty, but nevertheless highly unwanted.

    Very, very well presented. Only thing that always bothers me about the Miata skateboard is the fact the front and rear sections are held together by nothing more than a long slim 'ladder'. I assume much of the car's rigidity must be achieved by the mono body once attached but for a sports car, that underlying structure doesn't appear that great to me?

    Very good vid!! I dream of a 3.0 liter 60 degree V6, 232 HP. Shorter engine, mass lower and further back. 60 degree V6s are silky smooth, like an in-line 6. That would be the bell housing that is so smooth I think, long to move the transmission back closer to the driver and shift mass to the rear, aiding weight balance.

    Man, this didn't age well with the transmission issues the ND has. I'm surprised we aren't at the 6th revision of it to stop them from blowing up.

    • @rustinpieces
      @rustinpieces 2 роки тому

      I thought the same thing. Mine (1.5 here) is still fine after 73000 KM's, just bought it pre-owned (all new cars are insanely expensive in my country) and will have the transmission oil changed soon. Now I've been stick-shifting all my life and just perhaps it's a bit of an American thing to have transmission issues on these. Never heard or read anything about it here, and I'm an MX-5 club member.

    • @MattGreenland
      @MattGreenland 2 роки тому

      @@rustinpieces there's definitely failures all over the world as I used to keep track of them. Other countries tend to not match the US in driving enthusiasm or tracking them in racetracks. The internals of the transmission are known.

    • @blurayffan66
      @blurayffan66 Рік тому

      The latest ND2 does not have these issues

    • @MattGreenland
      @MattGreenland Рік тому

      @@blurayffan66 it does unfortunately. "V5 ND1 transmission" is the same as the ND2. Only difference is the front cover which accomodates the DMF the ND2 uses. This is well documented by Mazda fyi. Not sure why people still don't know this 4 years later. Failures are lower, but certainly not close to zero on yearly basis.
